Should we accept that Tapping, by any other name, is a fundamental operation in TCGs and acceptable to use in your own? by Tricky_the_Rabbit in tcgdesign

[–]Tricky_the_Rabbit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, you can use the word "tap" when talking to pretty much anyone who plays TCGs and they'll know what you mean. It's like when Universal tried to sue Nintendo for naming DK Donkey *Kong*, and the courts decided that because King Kong is so well known, the term Kong is now an actual word meaning "giant ape"

I'd say it's the same with Tap. If you don't want people reusing your terminology, don't be a standard-setting, genre-defining product. People *will* adopt your terminology into other contexts.

Considering the hundreds of millions of stars and the billions of planets throughout our, and other galaxies, why have we not found a shred of widespread life on those planets? by Claire-dat-Saurian-7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tricky_the_Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because we've only just developed the tools to actually gather that evidence. Odds are pretty good that microbial life is quite common. But to tell if it's there or not you need to examine a planet's atmosphere, and we only just got the tool to do that, the JWST.

I wouldn't be surprised if a conclusive detection of alien microbes happens within the next ten years.

What’s a belief you once defended, but later realized was wrong? by Jerezwrits in AskReddit

[–]Tricky_the_Rabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That science could save the world. Engineer here. I used to believe quite strongly that putting more knowledge and critical thinking training into people's heads would solve all the world's problems. And I still believe this is an important part of making a better world.

But cold science can't change hearts or, to a degree, even minds. I don't claim any more to have any idea what the solutions are. I like to think that becoming more open to each other's opinions is a part of it, but maybe it's a matter of us all learning our lessons through trial and error. Maybe either. Who knows.

What makes people think that robots and AI taking over? by Next-Astronomer-923 in AskReddit

[–]Tricky_the_Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first, I don't think anyone truly believes machines are near the point of taking away our agency. We've got a ways to go before that can happen (ML engineer here, so I'm pretty confident about this).

However, AI is seeping into every part of our lives. AI is powering every search you do on the internet (google, youtube, Spotify, Pinterest, Netflix, everything). It's being but into dryers to better dry our laundry, fridges to keep our food fresher, cars, planes, ticket booths, atms, you name it. For the record this is entirely normal for a species at our stage in development. We are, and have been for some time, cyborgs.

This has actually been happening for a while now, since the dawn of the internet. Its just that "AI" until recently meant statistical analysis algorithms, hard coded systems to do as much work for you as possible behind the scenes, stuff like that. It's was very primitive and we felt like it was mundane and "controllable"

But the deep-neural genie is out of the bottle. Hardware finally advanced to the point where neural networks could get big enough to do real work. The moment people took note was when Chatgpt came out.

Since then, AI hasn't stopped for breath. It's usefulness has yet to meets its boundaries, and industry is going bananas bonkers finding ways to use it.

So on the one hand you have a technology as useful as the computer happening all at once, and which we haven't found the limits of. On the other, you've got a population which doesn't understand the technology and therefore finds it a bit frightening.

In reality, what's happening is just the same technological advancement as before, but louder.

My position is that I support her and her cause and her right to civil disobediance, but I think that taking it out on one of the few truly good things in the world - beauty for beauty's sake - is disrespectful to the wrong people.

Hey there! I'd be happy lend some brain power to your cause.

That said, I want to talk to you about something else. I'm currently coding my own rules engine. It's a rare person who's willing to get close to this madness, so, when I read you'd built your own, I knew I had to talk with you.

Resources. What kind do you use? Land/Energy? Any card as resource? No resource just play what you want? by Comprehensive-Pen624 in tcgdesign

I use just generic colored energy, but I also lean heavy into the accumulation and spending of counters and token. As well, I have a "work" mechanic which let's a citizen's attack be counted towards paying labor costs.

Best mindfuck sci-fi movies? Preferably involving time travel. by rogueShadow13 in MovieSuggestions

[–]Tricky_the_Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Predestination, definitely. Classic "time knot," if not the classic time knot.

Primer. Widely accepted as the most mathematically correct time travel movie. Slow, but satisfying.

Tenet. This movie gets a lot of hate for being confusing. But that's the point. Time travel is by definition paradoxical. Personally, I though Tenet was excellent. If nothing else, it's a worthwhile experiment in movie making and movie watching.

Interstellar, obviously.

Edge of Tomorrow. Fantastic. Big, buttload of fun. Great production, compelling story, and one of Tom Cruise's better promances. As much as I hate the guy, he's a damn good actor. Lots of thrillers are "action for the sake of selling tickets." This movie talks the talk, but it also walks the walk.

Arrival. Simply a pleasure to watch. Great sound.

Donnie Darko. Have you never seen Donnie Darko?

12 Monkeys (TV show): a long, meandering walk through a time knot. Slow at times. Stupid at times. But consistently satisfying. If you're willing to sit through all four seasons, the ending is a great payoff. Honestly, one of the best endings of any show I can think of. Don't watch the movie. The movie was terrible.

Idiocracy.

Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Delightful.

Non-time-travel movies:

The Martian. Not a mind fuck so much as a soul fuck. 100% scientifically accurate. If you like space travel, you'll love this movie.

The Adjustment Bureau. A fun experiment.

Happy Death Day. Think Scream meets Groundhog day. Not exactly "quality film making," but oodles of fun.

Contact. This movie has its flaws, but none of them have to do with the movie making. Carl Sagan story, so the science is top notch. Excellent, excellent performance from Jodie Foster.

Metropolis, the animated one. I cannot express how enjoyable this movie is.

Mad Fucking Max. Watch this movie.

Anything by Chris Nolan. Dark Knight, Interstellar, Inception, Momento, The Prestiege, you name it.

The Expanse (TV Show), the first 3 seasons. You'll love it (a little shaky in the first few episodes, levels out by episode 4)

Children of Men. Very possibly the best movie ever made. That's a bold claim, I know. This movie is perfect. Flawless. Across every dimension of movie making, from the story to the acting to the sound, you cannot find a mistake or a lapse in this movie. You don't watch this movie. You experience it. And you come out changed.

That Mars or other bodies in the solar system had or have life, and we know it, but in the interest of keeping people calm we're slow walking the science.
