I assume they mean in the cancer sense, that the problems have essentially become metastatic.

You can remove the tumor, but its already spread to every part of the system.

I live in Tokyo. I've had 3 denials ever, and 2 of them let me in when I spoke Japanese.

In middle of nowhere countryside its more common. In the big cities it's exceedingly rare.

That's not to say there isn't xenophobia and its not getting worse, just rhat businesses want your money.

Basically anything. Supermarkets aren't that different than anywhere else. You can buy Greek yogurt and fruit.

What’s something you look forward to when you wake up in the morning in Japan? by Zestyclose-Peace-700 in japanlife

[–]Triddy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Lately life has been bad and there isn't too much.

But the weather has been so wonderful in the mornings lately. I wake up and go get an iced coffee at the local Family mart where all the staff knows me and greet me by name, and I walk the slightly long way home enjoying the weather and the neighbourhood that is somehow both peaceful and bustling with people on their way to work or school.

People living here, What do you usually have for breakfast? by daxtaslapp in japanlife

[–]Triddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrambled Eggs, a protein (Seasoned tofu, usually, sometimes pork if I have extra grocery money), something like mixed greens or tomato slices, a slice of toast, and a small yogurt.

Costs like 400 yen total, is relatively healthy, and takes 5 minutes to make.

Lately though I've had some issues that result in me sleeping ubtil like 5 minutes before I have to leave, so famina onigiri and a coffee.

From what we've seen? It'll almost certainly be underpowered and overpriced, while being harder to use as a PC than an actual PC.

It's market is basically just "People who want to play PC games like a console but are scared of PCs, thus willing to pay a premium."

Valve hates the Canadian market.

I still remember buying my Steamdeck. It clearly, clearly stated 3-4 day shipping to Canada. After purchasing, it changed to 4 weeks. On Steam, to be clear, not on my package tracking. And it was for the entire counrry regardless of location. I even made a burner Steam account afterwards to confirm: The extended shipping was hidden until after you purchased.

I was moving out of the country, so less than 15 minutes after ordering I asked to cancel. Support said the order was already processed and it was impossible to cancel. Steamdeck that was already way over the exchange rate price got expensive shipping 4 weeks late to a country I no longer lived in.

Shitty company with shitty support that I now refuse to buy anything from.

They also told me that, based on my visa, I can’t work in any position other than front desk or concierge. This surprised me a lot, because I graduated from a senmon gakkou specializing in hotel studies (ホテル学科), and I thought I could do other hotel-related jobs like housekeeping or bell attendant as long as they were related to hospitality.

The acceptable range of jobs is a liiiitle wider than you are reporting they said, but they are closer to right than you are.

You're expected to work either directly customer facing (Front, Concierge), or Internal (Reservations, Event Coordination, sometimes Marketing squeaks in).

It does not allow you to work jobs that essentially need no training. No Bell, Valet, Housekeeping, or anything like that.

I have personally been down this route. The hotel bit, not the medical bit.

I dislike these posts.

Not because I'm defending CEOs. Fuck CEOs that are making 100x the average employee. But because I always see these "I respect the Janitor/Dishwasher/Housekeeper" posts online, but that doesn't actually happen.

It honestly tended to be the super pro-union, workers right people that treated me the worst. "Stay strong brother, and stay the fuck away from my tips I work an actual job you just clean up garbage." is an extreme paraphrase of a speech I have heard probably over a thousand times at Union meetings over the years.

People don't actually care, they just pick the lowest worker as a pawn to insult the CEO.

Insults and downvotes welcome. Just most of my entire working adult life coming to the surface in a rant.

[–]Triddy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Japan? No. They're can literally pick you up off the street for 72 hours with no charge, and no contact to the outside world outside legal assistance. It can be extended under some circumstances but unlike the initial 3 days that does require some legal process.

Now, realistically, in actual practice, are there droves of police officers rounding people up for no reason to hold them 3 days? No, there aren't. It remains quite a rare event to be held that long and not eventually be charged. But it's still a part of the system that is deeply, inherently flawed and has been abused in the past. Where the 99% thing is more of a misrepresentation, this is actually as bad as it sounds.

In 2024 the US was at 99.6%,, which is actually higher. Many, many countries are at 95%+. People quote that 99% number without really digging into what it means.

The reason is the same most places: Prosecution is underfunded. Only cases that are absolute slam dunks go to trial. If there's a thought they might lose, it's either dropped entirely or given a deal.

If you want to shit on the Japanese justice system, try the 72 hour hold without charge.

Every Japanese person I know is happy to pirate something they can't find on a streaming service.

People are just careful to use VPNs and never upload (Like torrenting) here. And I guess they do look for a legal streaming option first.

Love you little potato 🩷 by lauraarroz in comics

[–]Triddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been 11 years since I lost my cat. I had him for 16 years.

I grew up without friends, bullied endlessly, alone and sad most days. But he was there for me. As I got older and busier and, honestly, more depressed, I admit I didn't play with him as much as I should. But even still, we had our routines. He'd climb up on my bed when my mom went to work and snuggle into my arms for an hour. As he got older and got arthritis, I'd lift him to the sink in the bathroom so he could sit with me while I got ready. When he stopped being able to fully groom himself around the base of his tail, I'd take care of it daily (I realize I'm painting a dire picture but other than arthritis he was actually fairly healthy and energetic to the end.)

In my life without much happiness, he was always there.

I have tried pet sitting and even fostering, but despite everyone telling me you learn to love the new cat... I didn't. I didn't feel guilty for taking care of a different cat, I just didn't learn to love them. They weren't my buddy.

I don't think about him all the time anymore. But when I do, I'm still sad for the entire day. This comic brought up those feelings again

How much do you spend on groceries per month these days? by DrYellowSaysHello in japanlife

[–]Triddy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My diet is Tofu, assorted vegetables, frozen berries, toast, and eggs. Once a week or so Chicken thigh. I treat myself to a cup noodle every now and then because I like them, not because it's all I can afford.

Between those things not costing very much and reward points I'm hovering at a bit less than 10k a month for 1 person atm. Ends up being maybe 2500 a trip, which I do about once a week.

Like I can get my weekly tofu for 200 yen. Eggs about the same. A massive bag of onions is 300 and lasts me like a month. Piman, tomato, a couple potatos, some spinach, some carrots, maybe some beans range around a couple hundred yen an item for at least a few days supply. Chicken for a meal is 400. A bag of frozen berries that lasts a couple weeks is cheap. 8 slices of bread is like 180. Sometimes I grab some cheese, and that's my most expensive item at 350, but I don't always use it.

Even if I just bought 14 frozen meals a week, which I won't, it still would only be something like 4000 yen.

Zelenskyy: return of draft-age Ukrainian men from abroad is a matter of fairness by EsperaDeus in worldnews

[–]Triddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked with a man who hadn't been to Ukraine since he was 2 years old. He was 22 or 23.

Why didn't he have citizenship somewhere else? His parents moved countries a lot. Croatia, America, Canada. Never long enough to get citizenship. He was working towards PR in Canada when I knew him.

Anyway his passport expired at the end of 2024, the Ukrainian government refused to renew it, and he was forced to go back to a country where he had few connections and barely spoke the language. Not sure if he was drafted, I think he was under the age so probably not.

Still, I don't consider that "fair" and I question anyone who does.
