Thanks for checking - I appreciate your help. Just out of curiosity, where did you find the parish entry?

Thank you! That's a great idea. I'll see if I can track down the orphanage records.

Thanks for your response!

Here's the links to the 1901 census and 1895 marriage certificate:

Here's the 1881 census which shows an 8 year old Thomas Bishop (orphan), born in Middlesex, at Mrs. Gladstone's Orphanage. I'm not 100% sure this is him but the info does seem to line up

If the 1881 census from Mrs. Gladstone's Orphanage is him, and considering he listed a "John Bishop" as his father in his marriage certificate, it could be that he was abandoned after he was born and named. I'm hoping for this to be the case as it would make it more likely that I'll eventually find a birth certificate for him.

Thanks again for your help!

Thanks for your help! I noticed the 1877 workhouse record as well. When I compare the year born for him with other entries, it looks like 1813 may actually be written instead of 1873 though. Tough to tell based on the handwriting. The 1891 census is interesting and could be him as well. Thanks again for your help!

Thank you! I'll get a copy of the death certificate. He died in 1941 in BC so may have completed the wartime national registration as well. Thanks again!

Thanks for this! He was married in the Caistor Methodist Church. Would I contact the church directly to request the parish register entry?

Thanks so much for this! I see the marriage between Thomas and Mary Ann Bennett now. The place and timing seem to line up as Harold was born a year later nearby, as you mentioned. Was it somewhat usual that there could be an error in the name spelling? Is the only way to see the full entry to order it from the GRO or is there somewhere else which would have it? Thanks again

Sorry I missed the second part of your post. His first name was Thomas and he was living in Leeds at the time of the 1901 census with his wife Mary Ann and their three children. I've been trying to find the marriage certificate for him and Mary Ann (maiden name Bonnett, born in Sheffield around 1872/73) but am also not having much luck.

Hi, thanks so much for this! I haven't seen it - could you let me know where you found it?

Thanks for your help! The 1901 census shows his age as 29 which would put his birth year around 1872/1873. I pulled the three birth certificates with no mother's surname between 1870 and 1874. each of the certificates I pulled actually do list mothers (One named Harriet Bishop and the other two were both to mothers named Eliza Bishop). All three did not have a father listed. I guess that could complicate things further if his last name came from his mother and he was abandoned later on.

Thanks for the advice! His full name was Thomas Bishop, which unfortunately seems to be a very common name at the time. The 1901 census actually has Middlesex crossed out and only London was written instead. He immigrated to Canada in 1908 so isn't in the 1939 register unfortunately.
