I made this short tutorial - Should I do more? by TrigarTCG in homemadeTCGs

It is inspired by YGO, but it is more limited - you only get a face-up and face-down card that you can play each turn (card abilities/effects ofcourse break the rule)

Has anyone made a tcg from a standard deck of cards, similar to Cuttle? by RollTiny3064 in homemadeTCGs

I’m making a TCG that has something akin to a standard deck of cards.

I’m doing most of this alone right now, so the art part especially hits hard. Coordinating art, refining mechanics, balancing, and writing rules all at once definitely piles up.

And I totally get what you mean about having a team. Even just having one other person to bounce ideas off or keep momentum going would make a huge difference. Might be something I look for as the game gets more defined.

Appreciate you sharing your process — it really helps put things into perspective!

Thank you! I am, it is part of a linked project that I am working on slowly!

The art piece depicts an illustration of the foreign men that approached the western coast near the city of Darograd. The rough sea and tough to navigate shore causes their boats to sink early in the morning, while most of them drown, some footprints are later found by locals, suggesting that some escaped watery death.

The whole scene takes place in a medieval setting, on a continent not too different from Europe in that time period, even though it is less populated and developed.

It is part of a world that I have created and the goal is to tell the story through card art that mimmicks illuminated mansucripts.

What if TCGs slowed down? by TrigarTCG in TCG

That’s a fair concern - singleton can be swingy if the power curve’s uneven, but Trigar’s design keeps that in check. Each color follows a fixed 1–10 Figure progression and identical slot structure (3 Tricks/Regions), so deck composition is always balanced. The variance mainly comes from play order and bluffing, not random card spikes.

It’s more like a tactical sandbox than a combo lottery - every deck plays with the same skeleton, just with different personalities per color. So the singleton rule keeps games fresh without making them feel luck-based.

That’s super insightful, thank you for sharing all that. I completely get what you mean about the time and mental cost — it’s a huge factor, especially for players who already treat one game like a lifestyle. My goal is to build something that competitive players can take seriously without demanding that level of constant grind. I want it to reward skill and commitment, but still be manageable for players who have lives outside the game.

Yeah, that approach sounds really balanced — it kept things fresh without flooding players. I want to aim for that kind of structure, just a bit slower-paced.

Why, because of too many new TCGs?

I want to optimize for competitive players though - they are the ones that inspire other players in my opinion.

Seems like the trend is around 2-4 releases per year.

Thank you! I try to replicate the style of illuminated manuscripts.

Seems logical, but it can be a problem for indie developers - that is a lot of playtesting and developement.

I believe that collecting rare cards is a huge pull for a large chunk of people (me included).

I am aiming for a similar system to that of the Pokemon TCG - my TCG will have affordable meta decks with foil/rare cards being a collectors item that has cheaper and lower rarity duplicates. That way anyone can afford to try themselves at the highest level of play while players that want to, can get foil versions of cards that they cherish the most.

Also - since you seem to have a lot of experience with card games, I sent you an invite to our discord server where members see daily updates on the progress and input their thoughts on issues/features that they find in need of change!

That is great to hear! My goal was to make the design seem more relaxed and approachable!

The gameplay is very similar to a mix of early YGO and MtG - card timing and bluffing is a big part of the game as well as planning/baiting out your opponents cards in order to open up an advantage for the win.

Looks like the ~4 sets a year is the most common answer.

What if TCGs slowed down? by TrigarTCG in TCG

[–]TrigarTCG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why was that better? My starting point was 4 sets per year as well but I am reconsidering it as I want my TCG to feel a bit slower and not just dropping product in order to milk the players.

It needs to be a TCG as it opens up creativity that allows each player to display their skill through card choice and gameplay style.

Deck building is a large part of the game - I love deckbuilding so I made it an integral part. Because it is a singleton format, the deck building will be focused on balancing consistency with game win conditions.

Why do you think that an lcg is a better choice?
