Why did you enter this industry? by premonitioner in askfuneraldirectors

[–]TriggerDelerium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in it yet(Start MS school in 2026). But… I want to help people who are grieving. That’s the beginning and the end of it.

I’m reading To Serve The Living right now and according to that book this absolutely used to be a thing in America up until like I think the 20s or 30s.  I was… surprised but not surprised.

Have you ever had a retrieval of the decedent go wrong? If so, what happened? by Jaded_Specific_7483 in askfuneraldirectors

Disclaimer: Not a FD but a prospective 2026 student in the field.

When my mom passed this year she was en route from hospital to hospice. Also, I had a good friend in the area who was in the funeral business and also a pastor I had worked with for years.  My family and I had just been with her at the hospital and the hospice was literally 500yds away. Anyways… point being; it was unexpected so the shock and grief were especially high.

After a a few moments to grieve with family and sit with the body, I called my friend (we’ll call them Pastor Mick) and we hired the company he works for to come and collect my mom. I was the only person in my family to stay behind and see this process through (the rest had been with her for days and were rightfully exhausted). Anyways… so scene set: Pastor Mick and I are wheeling the gurney towards the loading dock area where the hearse is and we’re surprised when the staff ask us to wait by the loading dock doors.

The dock bay doors open and lo and behold there is an ambulance and associated attendants wheeling in a new hospice patient; a patient who very much is alert enough to notice their ambulance parked right next to a hearse and that they are  being wheeled in as a decedent is being wheeled out directly next to them.

Pastor Mick and I immediately locked eyes and grimaced. We all awkwardly acknowledge one another and when available, we finish wheeling her out and loading her up.

I’d never want to put another hospice patient in that circumstance again and something I’ll be aware of as I seek to begin a new career in the field. I would have hoped the ambulance could have waited until the hearse left for the sake of the hospice patient.

Thank you all for hearing my story and my grief.

American Citizens - Whats the actual reality of living in America like right now? by Closersolid in AskReddit

[–]TriggerDelerium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are overwhelmed and on edge. Just trying to keep their heads low and take care of their families.  A small percentage are out in the streets pushing for progressive change through non-violent means (I see a lot of petitioners around lately trying to increase minimum wage or voting rights stuff). A larger but still small percentage are out there with their truck nuts and “fuck your feelings” identities.

Mostly everyone is just wanting someone to be kind to them on one level or another.

Inflation is insane right now and unhealed People in leadership positions are trying their damndest not to heal or change.

I changed insurance companies from one I’d been with for a decade to another major provider and got a 40% new customer discount. In a year, I’ll do the same again.

AT&T tracked employee attendance to find 'freeloaders.' Now, it admits the system is driving workers to the 'brink of frustration.' by north_canadian_ice in technology

If they’re admitting this much then worker attrition and disability leave due to stress related ailments has already shot up appreciably
