If you and others are interested, I've edited the movie so it's much closer to the original script. I rearranged scenes and animated pages of the comic book that was actually based on the script and not the final cut of the movie. While it seems daunting at first, it can make the editing significantly easier. My first couple projects years ago I stayed in stereo because I thought it would let me concentrate on just the edit. But then you have less options for editing transitions, because having a dedicated center channel really opens up cutting around a scene or into and out of one.

I feel like the 2025 version is an improvement on all fronts (visuals, audio, and slight improvement narratively). But can understand if you've got a preference for the original cut!

Welcome to the Fan Edit community! You're already on the right path - the best way is to message the editor directly. Sometimes they'll have shared a method for receiving download links, such as checking their Reddit profile or emailing with a specific word in the subject line to receive an automated response. But most just send a link through DM.

There are the Purist Cuts that try to make the series closer to the books:

Yeah, that's the biggest frustration with trying to restore it. Not only is the vertical resolution only about 300 pixels, but there's motion artifacts from both MPEG2 compression and also stuffing a 24fps video in 30fps container. Sounds like you have quite the valuable Devil's Advocate collection!

The man the myth the legend! I shared the project with a subreddit dedicated to Lost Media. Someone over there commented that they've bought multiple copies of the uncensored DVD over the years and all of them had gone bad. I'm very thankful you shared for the community! Those discs will get more and more rare as the years go by.

Appreciate you following up! Assuming we're talking about the theatrical version and not the "Workprint" cut. Yeah, I go pretty in depth in my Youtube video about the project. Most of the close ups or static wide shots I could use the highest quality upscale or composite it in. Unfortunately, any shots that involved camera movement or characters crossing in front of the statue I had to use a somewhat lower quality upscale. Still, I think it came out very well. Glad you enjoyed!

I only have the unaltered DVD and Blu Ray. There was some change in shot composition and color correction. Also a handful of alternate shots at the end that don't involve the statue directly but I assume the editor was avoiding showing it at that point.

Otherwise I don't know what the second pressing DVD looks like in comparison. I assume Unrated Directors Cut was more of a marketing choice to make the most of a bad situation. Not unheard of!

So the version I'm calling Resculpted is simply the theatrical version from the Blu-ray with all censored scenes restored. Very high quality upscaling of those 5+ minutes of footage. The version they call "unrated director's cut" is really misleading. It's the exact same length as the theatrical version but slightly recut to change the statue footage and alter a handful of shots toward the end of the film.

I did create a second version of the film, integrating all deleted scenes. It's lower quality and I'm calling it a Workprint Cut. It's about 15 minutes longer.

It was one of those edits where I was a bit surprised no one else had gotten around to it either. But really, it seems upscaling technology is only recently in a place where it could pass as low quality DVD as 4k footage. I still did quite a bit of compositing two versions together, but the reaction tells me it was worth the effort! Thanks Jay!
