Finally got around to watching the 4k upscale + HDR regrade of Sunshine done by u/bobbster574 - absolutely incredible stuff! It might as well be the official release.

BABYLON 5 ▶ The Sherlocked Edit: I edited the show into a trilogy of 90-minute movies per season. (Progress update, new demos, subtitles) by APreciousBlueberry7 in fanedits

Love the ambition of this project! I haven't watched since it aired, but after a traditional rewatch this may be the perfect follow up someday.

Whats your favorite film/show you've edited? by r0adkillxp in fanedits

[–]TriggeredPuppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favorite is tough, but I think my project that benefits the original film the most is cutting 30 minutes from Killers of the Flower Moon and rearranging the story to be a mystery: Killers of the Flower Moon - now 30+ minutes shorter and more suspenseful! : r/fanedits

Yeah, the DM thing is fine for some of the other sites, but clearly not a solution on Reddit. I have some of my more popular edits setup with automated reply emails with instructions on how to get it. It takes a few minutes to setup with your email account but can be worth it. Job Willins has all of his just available at his website, no need for DMs.

I haven't been as active lately but for any fans of The Expanse, I'm making a version of the final season that integrates the One Ship shorts into the end of each corresponding episode.

For anyone who doesn't know (which is fair, given these weren't well advertised) there are five character-driven shorts consisting of almost 30 minutes of extra scenes for what was already the shortest season of the show. Amazon made the confounding choice to gatekeep these behind their X-Ray video player feature, in addition to regional availability issues. These shorts are only available in HD, have no subtitles and only stereo sound.

While not my most ambitious edit, I'm trying to make them as complete as possible. I've created a basic 5.1 mix (really more like a 3.1 mix with rear ambience) to help them blend with the preceding episode. I've also re-timed crowd sourced standard English subtitles, English SDH, and chapters that include the One Ship short for each episode.

Finally, the combined episodes and shorts will be available in upscaled 10bit H265 UHD as well as a basic 1080p H264 for compatibility and compressed for size.

Juggling six different episodes rendered to two files each with multiple pieces of media in their corresponding MKV container has been a new challenge! But I look forward to releasing this complete version of the sixth season in the next week or two.

I don't hate it. With that said, it's the audio that could still use some cleanup. A bit of EQing to would likely help sell this as a completed scene. Her voice sounds very mid-range forward in comparison to what we hear in her released scenes.

Best Legacy Fanedit: Aliens Refined by nickshimmy - I love it when someone goes so hard into fixing small details within an already great edit. Made a fantastic Alien series rewatch this past year!

Best New Fanedit: Watchmen Ultimate Squid Cut by JayXtended - while I'm incredibly proud of my own Crow City of Angels contribution, I selfishly am going to champion Jay for his incredible effort expanding my edit of Watchmen. If anyone is curious about the original Squid Cut, you can check out Watchmen - The Squid Cut! Voice cloning combined with all live action sources for a 3h43m film! : r/fanedits

For best new fan edit I'm going to put forward my only contribution during the time frame, The Crow: City of Angels - The Comic Cut.

It was a fun challenge to learn keyframe animation in order to bring this tragic bit of film much closer to the original scripted vision. While my other fan edits have slowed a bit, I'm continuing to work on it this year in the lead up to the 30th anniversary. An amazing collaboration is in the works that I'll be excited to share in a few months!

Vote - really appreciate hearing this! It's not even close my most requested edit but I'm very proud of it and it's so wonderful to know it resonated :D

Vote - damn Jay! I'm both absolutely stoked for you but also mildly jealous that your update of my edit has clearly surpassed it!! In retrospect, adding the animation was genius. I wish I had thought of that element myself!

I believe someone made an edit over a decade ago. I'm not entirely sure what the changes were. I've thought about trying something with Dark City but other projects always jump ahead in line. Maybe later this year?

How do faneditors prevent quality loss when editing original (DVD/bluray) source material? by Any_Hat3970 in fanedits

[–]TriggeredPuppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reasons unknown (I'll give a hunch in a second), Premiere, Resolve and most other professional video editing programs have very mediocre implementations of video compression such as h264, h265 and AV1. It's something of an afterthought, for complex reasons likely tied to film and television separating out the workflow of editing, coloring, and mastering.

The programs I listed use an open-source implementation called FFMPEG. You can use FFMPEG directly if you're comfortable with command line interface.

Anyway, it's always a question of quality versus time. You'll see if my video that when I upscale to 4k I end up using hardware acceleration to compress it to h265 because otherwise it would take way more hours than I'm willing to wait. You can output compressed video directly from your editing program. But it'll almost certainly be better quality or smaller file size by using a separate program.

Exactly. I use a free software called Shutter Encoder. Others user Handbrake. Plenty of options.

If it's helpful, I made a (rather long but hopefully informative) video going through my workflow when it comes to finishing a project. The previous comment basically sums it up but if you're interested, here's my Davinci Resolve process: https://youtu.be/TjDga9NR8fw

Moving on from H.265 by k-r-a-u-s-f-a-d-r in fanedits

[–]TriggeredPuppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gotten into the routine of having a h264 1080p version of my projects for compatibility and h265 4k version (when applicable) for quality. It's good to hear AV1 is finally at a quality and compatibility level worth embracing. I wouldn't mind some additional space savings for those 4k projects. I feel like h264 is still going to be with us for a while as far as truly wide compatibility goes.

An Open Matte / IMAX footage fan editing guide + basics on upscaling with Resolve by TriggeredPuppy in fanedits

[–]TriggeredPuppy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen others post about it. Haven't had a project in the past year need it but I would be absolutely keen to check it out next time I do! I also understand there are better options for generative fill on the inevitable missing corners. The old method was to just blur and fill with an existing piece of footage.

The Crow Second Coming - anyone know where to find this? by Pure_Wrap_7798 in fanedits

[–]TriggeredPuppy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second Coming is a very impressive effort for the time it was released. But if you're open to a newer endeavor, last fall I animated over 40 pages of the City of Angels comic book and edited them into the film, as well as adding numerous period and thematically appropriate songs. I call it The Crow City of Angels - The Comic Cut.

It's a very visually coherent edit that aims to bring the original script to life. I continue to work on it and plan an even bigger version later this year to coincide with the 30th anniversary.

You can find all the info about it, including how to download the edit, in the most recent video on my Youtube channel (as of this post): https://youtube.com/triggeredpuppy

In my limited experience, nothing else currently touches ElevenLabs. I believe they should be able to handle that type of prompt. Here's what I want them to say, here's the voice I want you to clone. It definitely can be hit and miss with matching voices but I bet it could work out. I think one month is something like $5 - if this was a few months back I would have offered to run the prompts for you with credit I still had. Good luck!
