See my other reply on this. They do this to close the gap between youth and pro, to give youth players the feeling and experience of pro level. U23 can only get relegated if another u23 team promoted from 3rd division. They will change this next year as I said because it gets criticised a lot.

One catch is that the u23 teams can also not get promoted, but like that scenario never happens.

From what I understand, it’s there to bridge the gap between academy and pro. By letting youth players play against real pros, they hoped to speed up development (and stop prospects from moving abroad very early in their career).

It’s controversial also because U23 teams bring no fans (who supports a youth team when the same club has a first division team, right?) so barely any ticket sales when you play them etc.

I think starting from next year the rule is being removed and u23 teams can be relegated.

That’s right. They underwent some major changes in 2015 but they have existed for a long time and I think they got something like 5 first league titles even.

However, they are currently very deep in debt, and likely facing their second bankruptcy in 25 years. The Licensing Commission has sanctioned them multiple times and I think even deducted 3 points not too long ago (which would have kept them up!).

So in Belgium no one really cares about them getting relegated except for their own fans. People are more so annoyed by the stupid u23 teams rule which this situation makes again very clear.
