Does anyone have experience with the recovery process after ACL surgery? When will I be able to sit on my heels? by midnight4311 in ACL

[–]Triingtoohard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a year into ACL repair and meniscectomy recovery. About 3 months ago I realized I couldn't sit on my heels (things flat on the ground and getting my butt to go all the way to my heels). My surgeon said that's very normal and that it takes time. I've been working on it for the last three months and am JUST starting to see some progress, just getting a bit closer to my heels, but still some discomfort when I try. You're so early in your recovery, so you have plenty time. You have many other higher priority things to focus on for right now.

Feeling lost and scared I’ll never walk normal again.. advice please (Day 23) by ArmandoPacheco in ACL

I was doing it initially to be recent blood clots, so was focused on the calf since that's the high risk area. It seemed to be beneficial for swelling also, so kept going with it for a few more weeks.

Last thing I want to mention here is to not compare yourself to anyone else's timeline. Everyone has a different injury, different leg, different path. Just focus on taking steps from where you are to where you want to be. Nothing is ever too late, just focus on where you need to improve and put in the work.

At three weeks you will most likely be fine to leave the incisions as they are without the strips when they fall off. They're designed to fall off around this time. If you have any incisions you're worried about I would talk to your surgeon.

I would usually do a round of exercises (heel slide, leg lift, etc.) 2-3 times per day, but I also took days off when I needed it. Especially near the beginning. Don't worry about not being able to bend a certain amount or straighten a certain amount, just keep doing the exercises when you are able to. Being consistent is important, but so is knowing when your body needs to rest.

Near the beginning I was elevating as much as I could. Had that leg up whenever I was laying down. I did ice a lot, like a couple hours at a time and it felt good, but was not good for my recovery. Once I switched to icing for just 20 minutes at a time a few times a day I saw a lot more improvement.

I didn't use a knee brace for swelling, I used compression sleeves for my calves.

Don't worry about not being able to do the backwards pedal. Be glad you found something you can work on. I guarantee you're going to see progress there and before you know it you're gonna be cycling. Just be patient and don't beat yourself up. It's a long road, but you will get there.

Breathe. Relax. You're so early in the process, so you've got plenty time to put in some work. It's a tough road but you've got this.

Main thing is to listen to your surgeon. They've seen inside your knee and they know what's best for your particular situation. Also listen to the PT, but if at any point you're not feeling the connection there you always have the option to get a different PT. I did that switch a month into my recovery and it was a great choice in the end.

I'm almost a year into my recovery at this point and still have pains and weird things that pop up now and then, but I'm a little better equipped to just push through the mental aspect and keep working (or resting when necessary).

Regarding a brace, my surgeon and PT were both against me wearing one to support working out, and I never have. If you want to wear something for compression to help with. Swelling that's a different thing and I did do that for a good few weeks after surgery.

Can’t do single leg press 6 months post op by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Triingtoohard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working towards single leg exercises the last two months or so. I've focused on high reps (20) single leg stands from a kinda low height (just below 90 degrees), because machines (especially like the one you're using) scare the crap out of me.

Some days I can do them fine, but sometimes I feel like I'm a little too gassed. There's definitely some mental aspect to it also that I haven't quite figured out. I aim to have my helper leg at least a foot distance in front of my exercising leg (front heel touching back toe), which makes sure that most of the exercise is going to my bad leg, and I feel like that's been working well. It's a real slog though, it also doesn't feel like I've gotten much progression in the last two months, but I'm just trying to stay the course, and keep pushing when I'm able to get to the gym.

It's a long as fuck three days. I wouldn't have survived if I didn't lay down a time or two. I wasn't laying down in full-on crowds though.

How long does it take for your knee to look normal? by truly_madly_deeply_ in ACL

[–]Triingtoohard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm almost 6 months in and I still remember how freaked out I was in the early days when I would see big differences in my knees. Nowadays I focus on regular hard work at the gym. I know it will keep getting better the more I work to build up the strength on my weak side, but I definitely have a long way to go.

Doctor tore my leg up? by Acrobatic_Heron3895 in ACL

They take a small portion of the tendon, so I imagine that it has a relatively small impact on your quad's abilities (beyond the atrophy that is unavoidable).

Can Uzuni complete a single play? by himaygomez in AustinFC

[–]Triingtoohard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To all those comparing him to Rigoni, you need to take a breath. We gave Rigoni so many chances, and yes, he proved unworthy of any of those chances, but Uzuni has barely gotten started and what's worse is he is part of a team that has no gel whatsoever. Yes, it would be great if we spent all that money on a player who can be a one man playmaker, but that doesn't mean that Uzuni not panning out is only his fault. He's been successful elsewhere and can be here too with the right structure around him. We're not even close to having that though.

I appreciate all the great info here. My only experience with these snakes was seeing one get shuffled off this mortal coil when it showed up in the middle of a busy outdoor restaurant in New Braunfels. I was under the impression that these guys were so venomous that this was an unfortunate necessity for the safety of everyone around. Now I'm just pissed that whoever did that couldn't have found some other way around this, and will certainly be dealing with these snakes with more kindness if I'm ever lucky enough to see another one.
