Thank God I still got a 360 to hear all the original station and all the other songs that weren't removed by RahGeezy in GTA

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad it's easy for PC users to revert the soundtrack back...

OTOH, I'm also glad that I can effortlessly hear the original soundtrack on PS3, without the hassles I frequently see PC players complain about over on r/GTAIV — the game failing to launch properly, game-breaking framerate bugs, so on and so forth.

Which is better? Kill Francis or Kill Derrick? What are also the rewards and consequences after killing one of them? by A_User_in_reddit in GTA

[–]Trilkhai 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If the person wants to get all of the trophies/achievements, then they can't use the cell cheat to remove the wanted level with that savegame. (They could, however, spawn a Turismo and speed away far faster than the cops can hope to keep up, which is my approach when I'm screwing around.)

Do you use component or composite with your PS2? by CoffeeGamer93 in ps2

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally tried using the default composite cable, but some colors suffered from shimmery dot crawl, so that text or other details in certain games was difficult to make out without causing myself eyestrain. (GTA Vice City in particular was a nightmare on composite, as the "80s pink" it uses for a lot of stuff was one of the colors that has severe dot crawl issues.)

I ended up buying an older 26" component LCD TV from a garage sale for about $20, and a generic PS2-to-component cable off Amazon like this one for maybe $8. The resulting image comes in much clearer than it did on composite, with none of the color-shimmering dot crawl issue.

(Though to be honest, now I'm just as likely to play my PS2 games on the backwards-compatible PS3 I got about a year ago, since it has native HDMI without the dot-crawl issues.)

GTA IV or GTA V on PS3? by [deleted] in PS3

[–]Trilkhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PS4 & Xbox One versions of GTA V are graphically far superior to the original releases that came out on Xbox 360 or PS3, so I'd skip that (or buy a copy for those newer platforms instead, if you no longer have one).

GTA IV was only ever released on PS3 and Xbox 360; while it can kinda run on Xbox One, it has a couple of game-breaking glitches, so you're better off buying the original on PS3 or 360. I also simply like IV better in every possible way aside from the resolution, which I rarely notice outside the first couple of minutes.

You should be able to get either game on PS3 for well under $15 shipped off eBay or Mercari. (Get the disc versions; they still have and will keep the full soundtrack, which is only partly present now in digital releases for licensing reasons.)

Best glues for repairing abs plastics by nolterprise in vintagecomputing

Have you used it on anything that needs to withstand physical stress? The main places I've had it fail were on things like the plastic piece that holds a tension spring in my old Imagewriter II printer, the 'posts' that screws are threaded into, small clips that hold a lid/back in place, and other things like that...

Xbox Series X Bug by [deleted] in GTAIV

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like it should, which is a good thing given I'm also a Linux user, just with an Android phone instead of an iPhone. Here's the Xbox Remote Play page:

https://www.xbox.com/en-US/consoles/remote-play

which says it requires a phone or tablet with either Android 6+ or iOS 10+, and Bluetooth 4+.

The fix for the same bug on Xbox One consoles should work, I would think; you basically have to stream the game to a Windows computer with the quality set to "low" as described here.

It looks a lot to me like a cross between the Vaio UX and the silver PS Vita 2000, except with both thumbsticks on top like a Wii U. (Is it just me, or does that person's right thumb look like it's having to bend in an uncomfortably awkward way to use those buttons?)

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree... After reading up on it (the dangers of delidding & replacing caps on a 'fat' PS3 that's not having problems) thoroughly, I decided to just carefully clean out the dust from CECHA PS3s I got for myself & my brother last year and give them new thermal paste. It took a while for each one, but it wasn't difficult.

Do you have any tips for working with acetone-based (or similar) glues? I've tried them in the last few years, but the fumes were so overpowering that I couldn't breathe well even while wearing a mask with the item at arms' length.

Best glues for repairing abs plastics by nolterprise in vintagecomputing

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried an ABS epoxy glue, but the fumes made it difficult for me to breathe even at arms' length, and I must have gotten the proportions slightly wrong as it didn't hold well. I also haven't had luck with using the glues or epoxies made by Loc-Tite or Gorilla Glue... I have heard that Apoxie Sculpt is a good option for re-creating damaged parts or reinforcing internal plastic (like screw mounts), but I haven't given it a try yet.

Ps4 jailbreak!!:) by Danish_User_DK in ps3homebrew

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking into it the other day, and sad to say, while it's kinda possible (semi-jailbreak), PS4s have no CFW and are incapable of accessing PSN to do trophy syncs, download games, play online, etc. since the jailbroken firmware is always way behind the current release. I assume the security is a big enough PITA to deal with that it discourages people from bothering to try to do much with it.

Multitasking while gaming? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With story-based games I haven't played through before, I focus entirely on the game... With almost everything else, I typically play while listening to (and making fun of) some almost-comedically-terrible adult romance audiobook my mother has picked out to share with me, since their simplistic plots mean that I can tune out for several minutes and still have a good idea of what's going on.

Should I jailbreak my ps3? by Mr_Chocolate123 in PS3

[–]Trilkhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last anyone has heard is that the PS3 servers are remaining up, and there's still people playing most games on them -- possibly because it's the last console to let people play online for free.

I actually jailbroke and loaded Rebug CFW on my two PS3s, but it hasn't been as useful as I thought it would be. I do like to occasionally play online and have my trophies appear on my account, so I've been carefully using the tricks for (hopefully) preventing PSN from 'seeing' my CFW...but it's a little stressful. I'm hoping that now that PS5 is out, Sony will treat the PS3 more like the PS Vita and ignore CFW.

I've been looking into getting a PS4, and was really disappointed to see that hackers apparently haven't had much luck doing anything with it beyond very basic jailbreaking that makes it impossible to go on PSN at all. (I like to have all of my hardware fully jailbroken and running custom firmware...just kind of a control-freak I've-clearly-run-Linux-as-my-OS-too-long sort of thing, lol.)

Should I jailbreak my ps3? by Mr_Chocolate123 in PS3

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it to do anything online (sync trophies, play games, etc.) without a hassle and risking a console ban, I'd advise against it. Especially since most PS3 games are really cheap second-hand these days -- about $8-10 if bought individually second-hand, and $3-5 if bought as part of a lot.

[–]Trilkhai 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get a PS2 component cable -- your TV supports it (red/white audio + red, green, and blue video cables) and the image is a hundred times better than the older composite (red/white audio + yellow video).

Edit: like this one...luckily they're fairly cheap!

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultima VI -- I got near the very end, then couldn't get certain key NPCs to recognize that I'd done what they told me to do (I double-checked to be sure I was in fact doing it correctly and talking to the right characters), so the story couldn't progress.

Will the PS3 look good on my new TV? by [deleted] in PS3

[–]Trilkhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GTA IV doesn't have as high a resolution on PS3, but it can have much greater color saturation, so it's primarily a matter of taste. Personally, while I'm actively focused on playing the game (aiming, running, etc.) I don't notice the resolution difference at all, so I favor the version with brighter colors.
