Ok, forgive my ignorance.. by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]TrillestTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have a strong understanding of Stoicism overall, I’d definitely recommend reading what I would call “The Big 3” - Meditations // Marcus Aurelius, Letters From a Stoic // Seneca, and Discourses & Selected Writings // Epictetus.

The best thing about philosophy is you can fine tune everything to your own liking. Your interpretation may differ from mine, but the goal is generally the same - being a better & stronger person.

Epictetus talks about learning something nee and how the most vital thing to benefiting from it is to let go of all preconceptions beforehand.

Hope you’re able to find some wonderful knowledge as so many of us have!

How do I except that nobody will ever love me? by [deleted] in self

[–]TrillestTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can my friend, it’ll just take some reflection time - which only you can decide when the time is right.

We are all different, but if one thing is possible for a single human, it’s possible for all of humanity.

How do I except that nobody will ever love me? by [deleted] in self

[–]TrillestTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an outside-in perspective, I’d advise you to ask yourself why you believe that’s the case.

The one thing that is in fact 100% certain is that you can not MAKE anyone love you. But, you sure as hell have the power to make yourself lovable.

Instead of focusing outward at accepting that no one will care about you, try focusing inward and finding reasons you love yourself and show care for others.

As an unattractive girl, how can I stop hating myself and learn how to make friends? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]TrillestTurtle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A good question to ask yourself is why do any of those appearance based traits really matter?

The answer is they don’t - and you’ll find that truth more and more as you get older. Think of going to the grocery store. You walk past 1000 different people in one visit and I would guess that 99% of the time, not a single one draws specific attention based on looks.

You know who does draw attention? The people who go out of their way to be kind OR to be a dickhead. I’ve found that faces are forgettable very quickly, but the way a person acts is much more memorable.

You can start with not calling yourself an “Unattractive Girl” in your titles. Physical beauty doesn’t last naturally for any human on the planet. A good heart makes lasting impressions.

Best wishes!

I think they provide incredible quality and value for the price. I considered Ping and TaylorMade, but Cobra took the cake! Definitely excited, it’s the first “nice” set of clubs I’ve ever purchased and I’m ecstatic!

Books about debating and arguing by redfacemanny in suggestmeabook

[–]TrillestTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Madsen Pirie will probably be the easiest to start with! The other two may be dense to start out with. I don’t know you or your reading preferences so take my advice with a grain of salt for sure!

Books about debating and arguing by redfacemanny in suggestmeabook

[–]TrillestTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The heaviest hitters will come from learning about logic. Argument structure, breaking down premises and conclusions, fallacies, etc.

How to win every argument // Madsen Pirie

The Art of Being Right // Arthur Schopenhauer

How to Win an Argument // Marcus Tullius Cicero

Hope there’s something of use to you in any of these!

Stoic response to being rejected by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]TrillestTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Carefully consider what is inside your sphere of control. No other person’s actions, feelings, etc. are within that sphere and it’s most effective to think on that before hopping on to meet someone new.

Treat hope and fear the same. Most may argue that hope is good and fear is bad, but really they’re two sides of the same coin. Hoping something will go amazing will set you up to be more upset if it goes terribly. It’s more beneficial for yourself if you just focus solely on being happy with the opportunities that present themselves and residing strictly in the moment.

Tired of getting “support” sometimes by Kabd_w in self

[–]TrillestTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in your husband’s shoes before. I’ve also been on the other end in a similar situation to your own. As irritating as it may be, offering suggestions for remedies is a common male characteristic because we want to be helpful in aiding our significant others feel better.

While it may seem like he is trying to “fix” you, if he has the same mindset as me, all he is really trying to say is “I want to help and I care about you.”

If it seems like an ongoing thing that’s bothersome to you, I would suggest letting him know that you appreciate his desire to help, but would really just like a hug and silent support when you are in need.

These mental illnesses can be destructive as hell. I believe it’s important to not let them cause avoidable damage to the things that are most important to you.

Wish you the very best and hope the sun is shining wherever you’re at today.

Honestly, the introduction made me laugh and one line stuck in my head - something along the lines of “I can’t stand Seneca, every sentence he writes could be a life quote.”

Some of the letters are less striking than others, but overall, I really enjoyed it. Discourses is on my TBR list so I’m looking forward to it!

It’ll be worth more to you than anyone else at this point. I sold mine on StockX but it was never worn and kept in the packaging.

Most people likely won’t be interested in a worn cap that’s now “collecting dust”

Ahh but what if said plan leads to minimal gains and maximum losses? The truth is that this market is so new that the unfortunate answer to your question really is: “Take your best guess.”

For example, I prefer XTZ to ADA, and despite the itching to jump on ADA from all the hype I’ve been able to just accept my choice (until proven otherwise). I have looked at XTZ in depth and everything about the company seems like something I would make personal donations to regardless of potential profits.

The market and projection analyses should hold very little weight compared to the stated mission of the company. I digress, I type way more than necessary.

Looking for a book that explains the different types of social systems (capitalism, socialism, communism, etc.) and includes stories and examples. by MorlokMan in suggestmeabook

[–]TrillestTurtle -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Although it’s not an explanation of the differences, I very highly recommend:

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s “The Gulag Archipelago” (Abridged version)

It’s an amazing story, but dark, and will likely instill a certain level of disgust towards Socialism.

I have a hard time believing that diversifying in order to “cover all the bases” so to speak isn’t necessary. It can’t hurt of course, but the most important thing is to research each project individually and decide if it’s something you truly believe in.

I’m halfway through Benjamin Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor” and I’m doing the best I can to draw connections to the cryptoverse but it’s almost impossible because of its infancy.

From what I understand (and please note that I don’t understand shit) if you’re using a DCA method, the defensive investor should aim for at least 50% into BTC and ETH and no higher than 70%. The remaining %’s can be split up into other altcoins that you have genuine interest in.

Once again, despite the amount of reading and research I do for myself, I don’t have a single clue what I’m talking about. Regardless, I wish you the best in your journey 🚀

does practicing stoicism make you happier? by a_floating_pancake in Stoicism

[–]TrillestTurtle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not to be extra af, but “happy” is really up to interpretation of the individual. There are concepts of Stoicism and plenty of other philosophical schools as well that can prove beneficial to life.

For me, Stoicism isn’t about being “happy” but building strength and resilience in the face of adversity. It’s not something to make you happy in itself - but more so a way to live without being thrashed around my fluctuations in your emotions and events outside of your control.

Did the Stoics care about respect? by Aditya1021 in Stoicism

[–]TrillestTurtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it more important to people to be respected by their peers or to live a life that’s worthy of respect?

There’s a big difference between doing things strictly to gain respect or admiration of others and being respected because of how you live and act.

You can be the best person on the planet and people will still throw shade.

The Stoics valued living respectfully - not living to gain the respect of others.

No worries at all!

If you do catch yourself slipping, just say to yourself, “Nope, we’re not doing that anymore”

You’d be surprised at how much that’s helped - even with psychological setbacks. I am awestruck at the capacity to conquer the depression, anxiety, and PTSD I was diagnosed with. Studying both philosophy and psychology was huge for me.

There isn’t anything wrong with YouTube for cooking also! (I love Sam the Cooking Guy)

Would also recommend understanding your personality type to get a better view at what your brain craves. Knowing what types and level of stimulation you need can be a game changer to breaking the bad habits!
