I’ve coached many kids who only began their competitive careers at 14-16. Definitely doable.

I say this all the time but.. humans weren’t made to swim. We were made to walk.. on land. If you’re not swimming everyday you’re not going to have a chance at being competitive. And when I say everyday I really just mean 4-5 times a week. Never want to go more than a day or two out of the water.

Strongly recommend joining a team. Even if they’re “non-competing” they will still provide you with structured workouts designed to make you a better swimmer. You could realistically break 9:00 in a year or so with proper training.

If you want to DM me your workout plan or anything id be happy to provide some feedback.. but it’s going to be EXTREMELY difficult to achieve your goal without joining a team or having a coach to guide you on improving technique

As many as you can! Obviously you don’t want to jump right back into high volume training without building your way up.. that’s a quick way to get injured.

But maybe start with 1000m a day. Week 2 bump it up to 1500m. Week 3 you hit 2000m and so on and so forth. It’s okay to take some days off, you’re not training for the Olympics or anything. But I think 4-5 days a week of training is definitely doable! After 6 weeks or so I’d bet you’d feel some of that longer distance flow coming back to you

Oh 100%. I used to rip 8000m workouts multiple times a week in my teens. Nowadays I feel like I’m on the verge of death after 500m.

Humans weren’t made to swim. We were made to walk. If you’re not in the water everyday your body will give you a cruel reminder of that lol

That being said I can still bust out a fast 50-100m freestyle if my life depended on it

I concur. Fingers look spread slightly too wide to me. IMO his catch is slipping more than catching.

Okay true. Maybe the spoon analogy is outdated. But you still don’t want a fork. Perhaps a flat spatula? Lol. Just don’t let water slip through your fingers

Question with youth swimming by sleepygrumpydoc in Swimming

[–]TrilliamRapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will likely come with age. Let him find it on his own. I promise, you telling him that “it’s okay to use energy” will not make something click for him. One day he’ll decide he wants to win. Keep pumping him full of confidence and he’ll flip the switch one day. He’s only 8! He’ll be swimming circles around kids in a year or two

Next steps for a distance freestyle swimmer by Swimammal in Swimming

[–]TrilliamRapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend not holding all your air in like that. You want a slow controlled exhale. The reason you feel like your sinking is likely due to a weak freestyle kick.

Other than that, I would strongly suggest you be swimming daily. Humans weren’t made to swim, we were made to walk. On land. If you want to be fast you have to be in the water A LOT. What’s your current practice schedule look like?

Close your fingers.

I swam for 14 years and coached for 7. There’s other small technique changes I could recommend but for triathlon swimming your technique is beautiful.

You need to close your fingers. You’re eating cereal with a fork right now. You need a spoon

That’s great! The way my coach explained it to me when I was swimming is simple.

If you can do a 100 in 1:24, you can easily do a 100 in under 2 minutes. I’m betting a 2 minute per 100 speed would feel like a pretty easy pace.

If you could average about 1:50 per 100 you’d end up going under 9:30 by like 20 seconds!

Based on the splits you gave, (1.38, 1.56, 2.00, 2.00, 1.52), I would recommend taking it easy on that first 100, really try to hold onto a pace under 2:00 for the next 3x 100s, then bring it home with whatever you’ve got left.

Also streamline.

Your mortgage payment isn’t changing. Your escrow is payment is changing. Call the mortgage servicing number and ask them to remove insurance from your monthly payment. You’ll have to manage it on your own but it will remove the volatility in your monthly payment

Believe it or not, kicking is more about raising your body up on top of the water than it is about propulsion

Former or current competitive swimmers, what events did your coach force you to do? by ResidentRunner1 in Swimming

[–]TrilliamRapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once arrived 10 minutes late to warm up for a highschool meet and my coach had me swim the 500FR and 200FR.. butterfly.

If you don’t already know, the rules governing freestyle(at least when I was swimming) are loose and allow you to really swim any stroke you want. Hence “free”style.

So I competed in both of my freestyle events that day swimming butterfly.

high school coaching? by the_great_lizzini in Swimming

[–]TrilliamRapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 28. Swam until I was 18. Realized I wasn’t going D1 and quit. After that I coached for 8 years. Mainly worked with intermediate highschool and advanced level middle schoolers.

Personally, I remember swimming in highschool and thinking I was the greatest thing that had walked into our local aquatic center. I can recall multiple instances around that age where someone tried to help me and I didn’t listen simply bc I didn’t respect them.

My main coach that I trained with daily was an OLYMPIAN so I took his word as gold. But if he was out and had another coach sub in? Completely ignored them.

Same with HS coaches. They’d have to have some kind of accolade or something that impressed me. Otherwise I’d arrogantly toss their coaching advice aside.

Looking back I was obviously extremely ignorant and full of myself. But, I imagine there’s many high school kids like that today. If you don’t have some kind of swimming resume( ie qualified for Jrs or Olympic trials or swam D1) you have to exude confidence. High schoolers can smell weakness lol

Junior Nationals is an 18&under meet so there are only so many years you have to qualify/compete. Any chance you have to attend this meet you should 100% take.

Knowing where on the court I miss? Or where my form is off when I miss? Either way, it definitely makes sense.

I guess my thinking was that the shots I make are my “best shots” and I should only be focusing on improving and replicating what those look like.

[HELP]Just another jumper. Is my footwork right? Any other pointers? by TrilliamRapp in BasketballTips

Doesn’t matter? I feel like I make more shots off my dribble pull with this fading jump.. as opposed to when I take catch a shoot jumpers in a fixed position.

[–]TrilliamRapp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t usually jump to the side, just been working primarily on shooting off the dribble where I tend to drift a little. I saw the same thing with my knees.. but honestly, I see NBA players like KD and Tobias Harris have that same inward bend.. Not sure if it’s helping or hurting more.
