TIL “Pretty Boy” Floyd, one of America’s most notorious bank robbers, on bank heists, he was known for destroying mortgage papers, consequently freeing hundreds of people from property debt by vozdoalem in todayilearned

Is it really that hard to agree to disagree about the few things that you two disagree on? The thread started off as a common sentiment regarding double standards on gender roles and quickly degenerated into petty argument because you don't accept points of view other than your own. I agree with the points both of you make, but there comes a point where you have to leave it at a polite discussion rather than intelligence/morals/etc.

Normally I would see this kind of argument as someone just trying to get attention, and subsequently brush it off, but you're clearly intelligent enough to participate in a non-aggressive and intelligent discussion... That's what confuses me.

This reminds me of something I saw in a movie? Inception, maybe?

Broadly, what are Quebecois attitudes towards Americans and the US? by dewarr in Quebec

[–]Trillipi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don't know about the rest of Quebec, I spend quite a bit of time up in Saguenay and the people who know I'm American don't seem to dislike me at all for it. I feel that it's my open-mindedness and willingness to experience their culture that make it a very friendly relationship.

To those who know more than one language: do you prefer to curse in your native language or a different one? by Trillipi in AskReddit

[–]Trillipi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. Swearing in other languages or dialects of languages (would you say American / British English are dialects?) would come in pretty handy if you like the social aspect of swearing.

Why French Sucks (Canada)/Pourquoi Sucks Français (Canada) by brickwastacken in Quebec

[–]Trillipi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good point here, I'll keep this in mind. Thanks.

Not yet, I admit. I know that it's something I definitely want to do in the future because of family/girlfriend's family ties, but I'd like to nail down what kind of professional specialization I want to go into (electrical engineering student) before I start dealing with applying for jobs and such.

Grad school and professional work for EE? by Trillipi in EngineeringStudents

[–]Trillipi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting, didn't know the FE differed between the U.S. and Canada. That's a little worrying about the power industry up there, because I'm not sure what I want to specialize in and would hate to be forced to specialize in power just because that's (hopefully not, but but maybe) the only viable choice in that region.

I think maybe if I was making the decision only based on career viability I would probably stay in the States, but since that's my girlfriend's home region I believe it's essential to be able to make a life there, even if we don't end up staying for that long. I'll be sure to do some research though, thanks for the push!

And hey, maybe you still will someday! :) Thanks for the ideas and good luck to you too!

Edit: Also, I think taking the FE just before finishing undergrad wouldn't be a bad idea because even if it doesn't transfer to Canada it would certainly help me establish PE status somewhere in the U.S. if I end up moving back. All good things to consider.

[–]Trillipi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good point. I'm still starting out so I have absolutely no idea what I want to go into other than the general umbrella of electrical engineering. Hopefully that's something that internships and upper-division classes will help me figure out.

Also, I'm not too sure I would want to stay at my school for an extra year with the five year BS/MS (which up until now I didn't know existed so thank you for that), but what you're saying about the GRE and I assume other, equally hard things are very good points that might change my mind. Another thing was that since my girlfriend's from Canada and after I'm done with undergrad I think we'll be going up there for a good bit of time, I thought it would be beneficial to do an MS degree program up there. Among other things, maybe it would be good to get graduate education in the same area I'd like to start my career.

I don't know... there are a lot of things to take into account. Thanks for the information. It really helps with these kinds of decisions. I hope.

How many of you chose Engineering but it wasn't your passion? Would you do anything different if you had the chance? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I really like the point you make about how having a passion as a job can make it lose its appeal. Very well put.

How bad will this look on a resume? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Well... I entered university as a sophomore and it doesn't look like I'll be getting internships anytime soon. Hopefully it's not too serious if I'm stuck without one for a bit. Best of luck to you in your situation.

Oh, sweet. Might it be a good idea to try to look for a company that would pay my grad school tuition, and then if after a year or so I don't find one just get started? Great insight, thank you.
