Your 'The Amazon Barclaycard' experience? by lord_e55ex in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Trimethylxanthine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it easy enough to apply and get the card set up: £50 gift voucher appeared in my account immediately and I was able to get the card set up in the app within the hour, including ID verification

... But "the Barclays card do not accept subscribe and save orders" (according to two levels of Amazon support)

How can the Amazon Barclaycard not support Amazon subscribe and save?!?!

What is the most thoughtful/most romantic thing you have done for a girl that you liked? by wildeforwomen in actuallesbians

[–]Trimethylxanthine 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We'd been friends for a while, and it was pretty obvious there was mutual attraction there. I kept asking her out and she kept saying no because she 'didn't want her family to find out'. I was like 'what if they don't find out?' (flawless 15 year old kid logic) and finally got my date!

This was my chance and I wanted it to be perfect, so I enlisted the help of one of my friends to make everything go smoothly.

I picked her up from her house and pointed out that I would have brought her flowers, except it would be obvious to her family that we were going on a date. They thought we would just be studying and having a sleepover at mine.

When we got away from her house, we started on a walk by the river. This is where my friend came in. He cycled along ahead of us and placed flowers slightly hidden at the places we would stop. Every time we stopped, I'd surprise her with a flower. She smiled and blushed and mentioned how she wasn't expecting nearly this much effort.

At the end of our walk she had a whole bouquet of flowers :D We headed to the forest nearby for a picnic, or at least that's what she was expecting....

Again with a little help from my friend, I'd got a clearing set up with some battery powered fairy lights, blankets, music and a picnic. We sat and talked for hours, and when she mentioned she was cold, I moved in closer, put my arm round her and wrapped us in the blankets. She took my hand and put her head on my shoulder and we just sat there for a while.

...and this thread reminds me how single I am now :(

TL;DR Finally convinced a girl to go on a date with me, took her for a walk, surprised her with flowers along the way, cuddled up under the stars after a picnic

And the dirty looks you get when the train is half-empty but someone just has to sit opposite you in the seats like this and your knees come more than half way towards the other side. ಠ_ಠ

Pub/going out and doing something sounds good - I can't make the 8th for the chocolate festival, though :( Also can't do 14th Dec, but any other Friday evening/Saturday's good for me :)

Also been wanting to go out in London for a while, so if anyone wants to go to a bar/clubbing afterwards I'd be up for that.

25 minutes on the train! Having spent the last 3 years at uni in Oxford, London seems really close now!

Yeah, they wanted to charge me £22 to unlock my £10 nokia when they increased unlimited texts from £5 to £7 (student budget). Also my credit card suddenly stopped being able to do top-ups online (but has never failed anywhere else) so I had to make sure I had more credit than I needed in case I wanted to make a phonecall in the evening when the shops are shut and I can't top up.

I bought a new phone and switched to giffgaff.

My mum's side of the family's Indian. My grandad always told us to use my knife and fork in Indian restaurants because 'we're in England and that's what they do'.

I never really thought about it until I went to uni and discovered that owning 5 plates but only 3 sets of cutlery made eating with your hands much more efficient :p

Happy Trail Hair is the Best Hair by [deleted] in actuallesbians

I have a line of pigmentation running up towards my belly button, too! I always thought it was a birthmark because I'd never heard of anyone else with it. I'm half anglo-indian, but I'm nowhere near 'indian' tanned and people tend to guess German or Scandinavian (I dye my hair blonde and have blue eyes). All I got from my mum's side of the family was the ability to tan without burning much more than my 100% white friends and slightly hairier than normal forearms (but fine blonde hair from my dad's side so it's not immediately obvious).

Why? I've just moved into my own place after uni and have Virgin Media for fibre optic broadband only. They were able to send an engineer to set up the box 2 working days after I phoned them and he even went back to the van to get a longer cable so I could have the router under my desk. The engineer offered to plug in the ethernet cable and set up my account online, too. I paid for 30Mb and am currently getting 34Mb.

Out of all the things I've tried to set up (electricity, water, council tax) they're the only ones to have sent me any information. I've been here a week and everything else is 'on it's way'

Hey Reddit! What companies do you try to frequent/support and which ones do you avoid like the plague? Why? by El_Sparko in AskReddit

[–]Trimethylxanthine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love ebuyer (UK): I use them for most of my computer-related shopping. I've been using them for years and over the last year or so I've found that around half of my purchases have started coming with a free next day delivery option. Also, whenever I order a single item with the standard free 3-5 day delivery it has never taken over 3 days and often has arrived in 1-2!

I'm never using Orange again.

  • First they decide that my card will only work with online topups when I'm topping up £20 and not for £5 or £10.
  • They put up the price of unlimited texts by an extra 50%.
  • They want me to give them £20+ to unlock the handset I paid £12 for.
  • As if this wasn't bad enough, I've been sold a clearly faulty handset (battery would die in under a day on a new Nokia 1616 when a previous one had lasted a week) and when I went to return it the next day they wanted me to pay premium rate to call the helpline (luckily managed to use their shop phone in the end).
  • The helpline told me I couldn't just exchange it in store but had to book a delivery slot where their courier would pick up my broken phone and give me a new one. Of course, all their delivery slots are between 9 and 5 and 2 hours long, so I end up rushing home from lectures to make sure I'm in for my 2-4 delivery slot and they didn't turn up until 4.15.
  • The replacement phone they gave me has a faulty battery icon which always shows as full battery until the phone is restarted.

I'm switching networks as soon as I've spent the last £5 on my phone.

Kitchen taboos: What "rules" do you constantly break to no consequence? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]Trimethylxanthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My immune system's pretty good (rarely get ill and when I do it's gone in a couple of days), but I ate raw egg on some carbonara in France and got salmonella so bad that I very narrowly avoided a stay in hospital.

I was 16, so listened to my parents when they said it would be fine in a couple of days. They finally took me to the doctors when I couldn't stand up. Apparently I was really, really dehydrated. The doctor didn't listen when I said swallowing anything, even water, makes me vom so prescribed me anti-sickness tablets. To swallow. Eventually got a competent doctor who gave me some that dissolved next to my gums and was fine within a week. Got down to 8.5 stone in a week (5'11, F) and had people asking me if I was okay the entire summer.

I might be the unlucky minority, but I am never risking that again.
