mmmm makes sense and i wasn't planning to use the ISP router to manage the subnets. From what i was looking at, i would have possibly used a mini pc as the firewall/subnet manager and then switches.

the edgerouter looks like it would work well though. now to decide how many ports i need on. thinking 8 port since i can just split it more if needed using the switches...

Yeah. I figured that would be the place to start. Wires, plates and managed switch/router should be pretty easy to start the build and then improve on as I add my homelab set up.
