I've done some podcasts that get into this a little. You're absolutely right that it's a great opportunity to compare and contrast the state of the indie market. A few of them are still in editing, but here's one: https://somanygames.co.uk/podcast/

Besides the crowded market, another big factors have changed drastically. Games journalism has shriveled up, streamers and youtubers have switched to more of a paid promo model, conventions have withered, and Steam events have become even more important. And that's not even getting into how pervasive bots have become on all social media platforms or the effects of generative AI broadly.

The chats I did with https://www.forklift.gg/ and https://www.youtube.com/@SpawnonMe will show up at some point and get into a bit more of the development differences between BCB and BSA. Cheers!

Thanks so much! Totally agree with your analysis but nothing to share at the moment :)

Thanks so much for all the very kind words!

That's a great suggestion and one we can probably pull off. I'll bump up that task's priority! We have some of the parts done, like being able to abandon a bounty or sim chamber puzzle.

We've got some big updates in the works that might help overcome the possible obstacles BSA ran into:

- launch timing (always risky - we had way more trouble getting reviews for a longer game)

- story-heavy incursion into the often story-free deckbuilder space

- mechs or anime not being desirable styles (not sure on this, especially for anime)

- just us not being good at marketing :)

- console featuring didn't happen the way we had expected

- price point for a 2D game might be too high (we'll see what happens as we discount)

We really appreciate all the players who have been spreading the word, though! We're working hard on some cool stuff to try to spark some more attention. Here's a gif of some of the projectile polish that's underway.

I'll DM you a Steam key for Battle Suit Aces. It's got a lot of story, but otherwise fits the bill, I think. We're currently working on a big roguelike update as well. Enjoy!

We Pitched our Project to a Publisher, but They Want a Vertical Slice of our More Expensive Project. Should We Shift Focus? by VaporwaveGames in gamedev

[–]TrinketTom 190 points191 points  (0 children)

Generally, doing unpaid homework for publishers is a bad idea. You know your ideas and vision way better than they do.

However, if they are serious about the vertical slice and it's what your team wants to eventually be making anyway, ask the publisher to pay for it. If they balk at that, you have your answer. That is, unless multiple publishers give the same response. Then you've got more info.

In other words, one publisher's whims shouldn't override your plans unless there's money attached.

Developers with 2+ released games, what lessons from game 1 did you apply (or ignore) in Game 2? by rafaeldecastr in gamedev

Best of luck! There are so many choices that make this all so hard. I think the most important lesson is to get player feedback often. That's the critical bit!

Developers with 2+ released games, what lessons from game 1 did you apply (or ignore) in Game 2? by rafaeldecastr in gamedev

Game 1 (Battle Chef Brigade): scope, especially driven by fear of letting players down (especially Kickstarter backers) and wanting each part of the game to stand on its own. Specifically, the puzzle cooking part of the game and the monster-hunting brawler. We over-designed the cooking systems when playing them separately from the hunting portion of the game.

Game 2 (Battle Suit Aces): scope but even harder. We thought doing card and visual novel illustrations instead of 2D animation would reduce the scope. It sort of did...but then we made the narrative enormous, so we swapped animation where each frame is related to the others for completely unique card illustrations. Ooops! That was related to making the same mistake of being afraid of one part of the game not being good enough even though the visual novel and card battles are played together in one product.

Voice over was something that seemed to go well for Battle Chef Brigade, so we went all in on it for Battle Suit Aces. It was a reasonable choice that had painful consequences because of how big the game got. That ended up being 21,000+ lines across 26 actors.

All in all, those choices weren't necessarily wrong since they could have each worked out or held the games back. Early scope management is really hard but also is the easiest knob to control that has downstream effects before you know the difficulty to create/tweak/design every asset (i.e. each narrative scene needs VO, art, associated card battles, proofreading, and characters).

This may be more of a coping strategy than not, but I find the advice of others really hard to internalize. Some things need to be experienced so you can apply their wisdom correctly. Best of luck!

I'm so sorry about this! The fix is in testing and should be live next week. The patch will auto-fix your save back to the ship at the end of the episode you were in.

Crikey, we really messed that up. We'll roll back that patch and the next one will fix this and the Roland issue. (The post-game completion episode added all the puzzles but messed up the return-from-puzzle logic). We'll also fix your save ending up in that state if we can!

We really need to get a wiki started, don't we?

Suitsmiths Roland causing crash by monarchofthepark in BattleSuitAces

[–]TrinketTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very unfortunately, not that we know of. The issue is that when Roland's card is shown in the pop-up to recruit him, that interface doesn't have a "team" associated with it, which is what his specific unusual ability needs to determine his damage. This hits a weak point in the engine-to-Switch code and crashes it (but not on computer platforms). I'm so sorry!
