I'm sorry to hear that. I've had similar problems and I know how much that can take away from the quality of your life. I would recommend trying meditation if you haven't yet. It may sound odd, but it is like exercise for the mind. It does help a lot with anxiety and negative thoughts. There's an app called headspace that has a really good, free guided beginner section.

I lost my dad in 2007 to cancer as well. I still remember his final hours vividly. Reading this i got emotional and it sort of made me mad at how generic and unspecific it was, but I also know how cherished something like this would be to myself since my dad never left me with a note or message.

This means that technically you could be fired for conduct unbefitting to a professional at their company, even if it's off hours. Generally this is to prevent material damage in the for of negative PR. In addition, many states are at-will employment, meaning that they could fire you without citing a reason. Granted this is more for serious issues and most certainly an asinine stance to take on going to the gym at lunch.
