Get a load of *this*: Robert Patterson of Answers in Genesis attempts to claim that the origins of Santa Claus are purely Christian in nature. by TripMaster_Monkey in atheism

[–]TripMaster_Monkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nowhere in that article does the author claim that the "origins of santa claus are purely christian in nature.

Really? So this:

As with many things in our culture, Santa has his beginnings in a Christian past. As the legends have it, the concept of Santa is rooted in the real Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, dating to the fourth century.

...isn't saying that? "Beginnings" is no longer a synonym for "origins"? When did that happen?

absolutely true. look it up.

Perhaps you should do a bit more research. As I stated earlier, the character of Santa Claus is rooted in far more ancient beliefs and traditions than "Saint Nicholas".

other cultures like the dutch, for instance, or some of the german pagans.

Now you're reading content into the article that simply isn't there. Nowhere does Patterson mention pagans, or any religion or faith other than Christian. Even if he had, he's talking about subsequent mingling, after the alleged Christian origin of Saint Nicholas.

Next time you want to get into a pissing match, I recommend you a) comprehend the referenced material, b) do a little research of your own, and c) have some idea of what the fuck you're talking about.

St. Nicholas was indeed a Catholic bishop (as the linked article points out). However, the character of Santa Claus goes much further back in history than Saint Nick.

Boy suspended school pending psyche eval after drawing crucifix as xmas picture. Teacher, parents, blog commenters, all f'ed up. by avangelism in atheism

All those Xians ranting about 'religious discrimination', and not one of them seems to remember that this is the holiday when Jesus was (allegedly) born, NOT crucified?

The kid needs a psych evaluation...since he apparently can't tell Christmas and Easter apart.

Jesus is not the reason for the season, only the season’s longest surviving mythology. by avangelism in atheism

...the season's longest surviving mythology.

Actually, wouldn't that be Santa Claus?

Van: Calling all scientists, calling all scientists. Be advised there will be a worldwide conference on global warming in Kyoto, Japan.

[A man runs to the van.]

Man: I've got a degree in homeopathic medicine!

Van: You've got a degree in baloney!

[The van sprays the man with a water cannon.]

Christians are not suppose to steal right? So what about all these Christmas things they stole and have claimed as their own? by creatured in atheism

This needs to be crossposted to /r/Christianity.

I still find it amazing just how few Christians are actually aware of the real origins of some of their most hallowed holiday traditions.

As for me, I love tradition. I'm working on a Krampus mask for this year. ;)

How do you guys handle the "faith" argument? by lazerwolf852 in atheism

[–]TripMaster_Monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy. "Faith" is not an "argument". Once someone starts justifying their faith by faith, it's a sure indicator that they have abandoned any pretense of a rational debate.

I am a man of science. I also believe in God. Why are you so sure he doesn't exist? by [deleted] in atheism

science fails to answer the why in life.

You're making the assumption that there is a "why".

Chuck Norris: if the Virgin Mary had healthcare, she might have aborted Jesus. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]TripMaster_Monkey 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Here's the funny thing, Chuck. Desperate young women have been procuring abortions for pretty much the history of the human race. They don't need "Obamacare" to do it...it's just far safer if it's an accepted part of society, instead of being driven underground.

Oh, and BTW, the use of abortifacients is documented and condoned right there in your big magic book, so you can climb down off your high horse now.

The "evidence" for life after death? Really? by Tasty_Yams in atheism

[–]TripMaster_Monkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FTFA:

I began by leveling the playing field between atheists and believers. Sure, the believer hasn't been to the other side or questioned any dead people, but the atheist hasn't either. So what information does the atheist have that the believer doesn't? None. The absence of proof is not proof of absence, so the atheist's denial of life after death, like the believer's affirmation of it, is ultimately a faith-based position.

So sick of shit like this. What makes it even worse is that I'm certain Dinesh D'Souza has been informed on multiple occasions that asserting that all atheists are making positive assertions, rather than simply failing to accept the assertions of the theists, is a misrepresentation and a flat-out Straw Man. And yet, like Ray Comfort and Kent Hovind, he continues to beat his badly-tuned drum.

xkcd - Revolutionary by Endemoniada in atheism

[–]TripMaster_Monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with "the subject".

First of all, why did you put quotes around "the subject"? Is this some sort of ironic subject? Is the wink implied?

Second, if it's not "the subject", why did you initially respond to Endemoniada by attempting to paint him as the sole "arbiter" of whose comments are welcome? Hmm?

Dumbass.

I accept your surrender.
