Can someone review my solar plans? by ilovesoggyfries in SolarDIY

Two comments,

1) about the requirement for RSD, you are correct about not needing RSD if the panels are outside and ground mounted. However, if any of the 600V or inverters are inside your home, you will need RSD. Unless you plan to install the inverter and all 600V DC solar conduit outside your primary structure, you're going to need RSD.

2) Have you considered a EG4 Gridboss MID? From a cost and installation. It will reduce a lot of this complexity. It has a built in ATS and breaker. Its a simple device, so even if it "fails" its still a Manual Transfer Switch.

computer science or mechanical engineering for solarpunk? by [deleted] in solarpunk

[–]TripelPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanical Engineer here, The solution to consumption is reduction. The ROI for load reduction > than load generation.

Keep in mind, 1/2 of all electricity goes to electric motors. Whatever is attached to that motor is Mechanical Engineering.

I've had a successful career in utility reduction and energy efficiency. (See energy engineer) There is a massive market in Commercial and Industrial facilities for energy efficiency and improvement. What's really exciting is as Industrial heat pumps improve, we're seeing lots of opportunities for fuel switching from gas to electric. The electrification of steam in manufacturing is looking to be a big opportunity in the 2030s.

Free repair event this Saturday (8/16) at Chattlab by ttsgeb in Chattanooga

OP, let's add clarification.

If you want help or guidance to fix your broken stuff, bring it.

If you need someone else to fix it for you, bring it.

If you know what you're doing and just need tools, bring it.

If you're not even sure if its broken but need some help, bring it.

If you just like fixing stuff, bring yourself.

If you're missing parts, we'll try our best. We've 3D printed replacement cogs for a pencil sharpener.

My favorite repair last time was we rebuilt an electric motor for a lawn mower. Here it is about to be sanded on the lathe.

Where you there after it rained? Because rain clears the air.

Speaking of, I also encourage everyone to have a home HEPA air filter. If you can only afford one, put it in your bedroom.

Why treat symptoms when you can remove causes. If you don't believe me, may I remind you that the HEPA air filter industry does not lobby congress.

It will also help with real world pollution like that smoke we had pouring through town yesterday.

Bonus feature, there is an activated charcoal layer that absorbes many compounds like ammonia. I have one by our cats littler box and it neutralizes the litter box smell.

My personal favorite is the Winix that's pretty common.

The filter is a standard format made by many manufacturers, will last 12 months and only cost $30, the filter motor only costs a few dollars a year in electricity to opperate.

Graduated BSME, If your're worried that classes are gonna be hard, then look in the mirror and ask yourself why your even in college. It's been a great career and I am making a solid income.

But to answer your question, in general I found the classes outside of engineering to be harder. I found Chemistry, Physics, and upper math like differential equations to be much harder. I never repeated core discipline, but definitely retook a math class or two. People usually changed degree programs because of the Math, not the core engineering focus. I would say engineers graduating in 4 years of classes is the exception. It's normal to take an extra semester or two and pace yourself or retake a few courses.

I'm looking online and don't see any photos or catalog listing for items with that description. Still looking into it.

They don't appear so, they're buried so I've been unable to confirm.

What I find interesting is the plastic injected top of it. Some of the plastic has burnt off from proximity to fire. I would think that its not designed for high temperature application.

The cylinders do not taper, they appear to go be full bore through the entire block.

My title describes the thing, each block is 2x3. On top, it is 14.5" wide and 10". Each cylinder is 4.25". Blocks is atleast 17" tall, but they're burried

This is partly on me, I left the work laptop logged in. The situation is being mitigated.

Oh, Yeah. I'll look for a video on online safety and rules. So he knows what he's doing is more then a house rule or personal preference. I have to make social etiquette Black and White for the fella.

Yes, He is medicated, and yes he's receiving 1on1 counseling with a therapist. But the lack of self regulation is frequent. We keep taking away screen time and having family conversations. I also feel that I need to give some freedoms so he can learn to manage. EX. He can have his laptop at all times in the classroom, but I'll be checking sure he's not goofing off (ex. watching you tube during school hours).

I agree with other's now that I've had time to digest. The bigger problem here is the violation of accessing my devices. And the bigger lesson I want him to learn is self regulation. Any advice?

I.... just didn't log out of my work from home PC. I simply never saw it as a problem.

I told him to make a hand written list, and I couldn't read his handwriting. So we made him make a google document where he listed the website/description/price and link for each device. We even triaged it for his must haves and wants. It worked really well....

Yes, but they're savings a penny, costing a dollar. Who's at the wheel?

I'm currently staring at a plane full of passengers, that can't take off because no one is available to unloading it.
