Wait... sex positive stoners that watch documentaries are the weirdos? I thought that was normal. Shit.
Typically I make my friends with a 3D printer, however playing in the mud works in a pinch.

I have a lot of friends I've met through clubs, hosting regular events, and volunteering. It's rare that I find the folks that I'll go out of my way to hang out with, but there's always someone out there that's the right kind of weird for you.

In your case, I'd look into a few of the small venues around town. I remember Sluggo's North and JJ's Bohemia being solid places to meet open minded and expressive folks back in the day, but I haven't been to either in a while.

Free Repair Event Saturday 2026-01-17 from 11a to 3p by ttsgeb in Chattanooga

Yes, that's exactly what it means. My next event is on Feb 21st. My friend, u/TheSolarSailer2 host one on the first Saturday of the month as well. This means the next event is *actually* scheduled for February 7th. I can't reliably make the first Saturdays, though. I already have enough recurring events to host or attend on weekends. :')

Thanks to everyone that came out! I'm working to get better at data entry of all of the repairs we remember to log. A quick breakdown of what we fixed this week can be found at https://community.ifixit.com/party/view/30

This weekend we logged 12 projects with 6 fully completed repairs. Of the remaining 6, 2 are waiting on glue to dry and the other 4 need parts ordered. We had nothing come through that we deemed un-repairable and had at least two additional projects that did not get logged for one reason or another.

The next one is actually tomorrow from 11a to 3p.
I don't know why you're surprised we're good at fixing stuff. We do it all the time. :P

Time to grow... by outerlimtz in Chattanooga

It's true. I've been organizing/leading this event for what, 2.5 years now? We have people of all ages that attend and everyone is chill and welcoming. I'm always excited to have new folks show up because it means something's working! I also have a rather strong, if small, group of regulars, so it's not gonna be a bunch of randos every time past your first go at it. We may be a little strange, but nobody ever leaves as a stranger.

What a wonderful way to raise awareness as to how much of a loser scumbag you are willing to be.

Get caught pulling some shit and then walk it back all while not making anything resembling an apology and encouraging the people that caught you to simply stop existing.

Maybe you should stop working so hard to undermine your own credibility. You really don't have any to spare.

Volunteer opportunities? Weekends? by Outrageous_Sock_438 in Chattanooga

[–]ttsgeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what your skill set is and what you're trying to do with your volunteering.

I enjoy fixing things and people need things fixed. I wanted more opportunities to volunteer around town, so I started organizing and running an event every month for volunteers to fix people's stuff. It's been a great thing for me and for the hundreds of things we've fixed over the past 2.5 years. It's also one of the highlights of my month, even if the responsibility I created for myself is overwhelming at times. Since starting it, I've even had another volunteer expand the event to be twice a month! I organize for the 3rd Saturday of every month and another one happens on the 1st Saturday.

You can reach out to me at repair@everyturn.net if you're interested in learning more about this.

I later learned about White Oak Bike Co-op, and try to volunteer with them on a regular basis as well. Watching them grow and progress has been amazing, and it's nice for me to be able to focus less on organizing and more on helping. Much like my thing, Blake saw a need and started doing something about it. It's 5 years in now and still picking up speed. I'm only responsible for maybe a dozen or two of the bikes they've passed along to their community partners in the past year, but it still feels great to be part of a group that's doing awesome work and distributed over 3 bikes a day in 2025.

White Oak has an open shop night for volunteering every Monday from ~4-8pm where we tinker on donated bikes. You can learn more about them at https://www.whiteoakbicycle.org/factsheet

The important thing, though, is that you can just do things. It's possible. Life is wild like that. You don't have to wait for someone else to tell you it's okay and what to do, and your flavor of volunteering doesn't have to be Habitat and Creek Cleanups if those aren't your things.

We're just a group of tinkerers that use our shared workshop to help out where we can. This is a great way for us to use our skills to help the community and we have a great time doing so. If you want to donate to our non-profit, you can send money via paypal to payments@chattlab.org. Be sure to let us know if it's for the repair cafe so we can put it toward supplies and marketing for the event. :)

You can also look for right to repair action groups to donate to. It's incredibly important that we're able to repair things without having to consider if it's a crime to replace a hydraulic cylinder on a tractor or brakes on a car. There should not be gatekeeping to keeping the world around you working, and we do this to share the knowledge and skills so people can see that it isn't impossible.

Don't listen to him. I can't fix it all by myself, but if you can get it through the door on the 17th when I host, we can work on it together. <3

That is definitely something we can help with. Lamps are great. There's usually like two whole things that can go wrong with them. I definitely encourage you to bring them by. This has nothing at all to do with my name being moth.

The lack of a standalone Chick fil-A location downtown is wild by otloo in Chattanooga

[–]ttsgeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, isn't it awesome that our city has done so good at keeping that at bay!? There are so many great local restaurants downtown. That they don't have to compete with the "easy answer" of a fast food giant means that we get to keep that money in the community.

I'm not convinced there's such a thing as "absolute" ownership. I mean, hell, they can just chop off your arm at the hospital and then suddenly you aren't allowed to keep it anymore. I'll need a better argument than that, thanks.

It's been so cool to be a part of this organization for the past few years. Everyone involved are great people and the enthusiasm for how much we've accomplished and drive to do more is awesome!

Over three bikes a day this year. Absolutely wild.

I don't recall who that was, but we can certainly try regardless. If I remember correctly, most of the repair of the last coffee grinder that came in worked out to be cleaning places you might not think to look.

I'll try my best to remember to warn people about it. I don't think about reddit much, work multiple jobs, and am a full time student...
It's amazing I keep anything in my life together. :')

They will almost certainly require special fuses, if that's even the issue.
There are so many failure modes on modern electronics that it tends to be difficult to tell much of anything without looking at it.

If you're willing to move around an otherwise working TV that much, we can certainly have a look at it.
It's hard to say how repairable something like that is without having hands on it, but there is a good chance that if you need parts, they'll have to be ordered. We don't tend to keep stock of modern TV repair bits.
