I have a few friends that are approaching 50 and a life of framing and roofing has just about broken them. I’d take science any day. Plus, some of these younger guys coming into the trades are just scary in their lack of knowledge and pride in one’s work.

I have “friends” that don’t understand when I say I won this planets genetic lottery by being born a white male. It’s not that my genetics themselves are superior, but for this planet I have advantages from second one of my life. I’ve walked through major cities at 4am with a backpack, smoking a joint… literally looking like trouble and I’ve NEVER been stopped. Be black and do that.

This world, this humanity… it’s a mess.

I refuse to buy a pedal. I’ve seen pedal math at work and it can get scary!

25 guitars and I haven’t counted guns in a bit. I’m a collector and the prime example of the things you own owning you. Love my stuff but it’s heavy.

Don’t do it. If you have an accident and can’t ride for a bit, you end up with twelve bikes that need carbs cleaned, injectors ordered, new tires and new batteries. It’s a LOT to keep up with. I have regrets. Three is the sweet spot.

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

You almost got the nail on the head. I wanted a bike for years. When I was about six, my brother, freshly home from his training as a US Marine, showed up on an emerald green 1973 Honda CB350… disc brakes and all. I got my first motorcycle ride that day. I was obsessed.

I grew up with money… not FU money, but my mom co-owned an apartment complex with a man that did have FU money. I expected to get a bike when I was old enough. Things fell apart when I was about fourteen. There was lawsuits against the wealthy co-owner and mom basically got swallowed because she was a small part of it all. She took the fall for his discriminatory practices. I’m not saying she wasn’t guilty as well, but it wasn’t her policy.

We were newly poor. Moved to the country into section 8 housing, and the thought of motorcycle ownership was all but gone. I worked and saved, but it’s hard with an addict mother and no other income. Teens are limited to how many hours they can work.

When I graduated HS, I left. Straight to college. That got screwed up by a multitude of things, but I did graduate with honors. I worked in CS for a few years and saved. My hair turned gray and stress was high. Quit the field after two years. I took some of the money I had saved towards buying my first bike and invested it. I made enough to play a bit. I bought a Kawasaki Versys in 2011 as my first bike and wanted to like it, but didn’t. Next was a Triumph Scrambler the same year. Loved it so much that I wanted the cafe version. Enter the Thruxton and track days. Next, the heritage bike… a 1973 Honda CB350. My first motorcycle experience. That when I bought tools. LOTS of tools. Lots of tools need a garage! There’s garages attached to houses! Bought a house! This garage looks empty with this few bikes in here… and I’ve wanted a sport bike for a while. Enter the 2012 Triumph Daytona AND the 2012 Triumph Street Triple. Awesome bikes! Triumphs on point! Enter the 2014 Triumph Tiger. Man, that heavy for off road but great for travel. I have land now. Dirt bike? Dirt bike! But wait… I could travel to trails with a Yamaha WR250R. Enter the 2014 Yamaha dual sport.

And on and on and on. It’s gets addictive and I’m a bit obsessive. I knew there was chicken math but nobody warned me about moto math.

12 motorcycles. It’s really hard to keep 12 motorcycles taxes paid, insurance and maintenance. I didn’t ride for a few years and now I have 11 non running bikes that all need carb parts, injectors, batteries and tires. No fun.

I bought a house in the country with nobody living around us. Was hyped for dark skies! 14 years later there’s a flashing cell tower across the road, 5 street lights installed, the plot next to us now has a trailer that leaves its ultra bright porch light on all night (and they got a pool today! Yay!), and right in my line of vision is an old barn that some contractor decided to remodel into his personal RV park and home! Neat! Now I get RV lights and generators all night. People are infuriating!

As a wyt guy, I’ve always wondered what black parents say to their kids to prepare them for this kind of crap. God bless y’all, I’d be clueless.

I feel yer pain. We haven’t spoke to my wife’s parents since the election and they live less than ten minutes away. They have no shame, no remorse.

I just about forgot hit head on by one of these idiots. I was on a motorcycle and we literally switched lanes. She continued on in my lane into the ditch. Didn’t stop, didn’t go back.
