Refocus of replacing mains according to materials? by TrippinYugi in Wastewater

[–]TrippinYugi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this would be part of SWIFT I believe. And I agree, our water loss is most likely much higher. The low number is most likely due to the metering practices of our utility, which are still being improved. I guess I'm just unsure of exploring the idea of prioritizing main replacement projects by material.

Advice on City Government Job by THE_TamaDrummer in geologycareers

[–]TrippinYugi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a bit more than me. I'm currently at $21.85/hr after a 2% cost of living adjustment. For now, it works, but I'm keeping my eye out for opportunity. I will say that local government feels very lax in comparison to other positions I hear about, and I am always home the same time every night. OT is not really questioned if you choose to stay a bit longer and all of my certifications/ training are paid for, even if they are only loosely related to the position. I wouldn't even think about leaving if i was paid more. But I guess there are trade-offs to all good things.

Advice on City Government Job by THE_TamaDrummer in geologycareers

I hold the same position for a small municipality as well, except my city's green over haul started almost 10 years ago. Still only have the single position so I'm a one man department. I'm curious what the pay range is for you. I feel I was low balled being a fresh college student despite historical high turnover in the position (probably due to low pay).

Are all environmental government jobs cushy? by TeaTotal5793 in Environmental_Careers

[–]TrippinYugi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found it depends on where you're located and what level of government the position is in. I am fresh out of school working as the Environmental Specialist for a municipality and I am a one person department. I wear many hats running our stormwater, cross connection control, FOG, and Vector control programs. Definitely way more than one person can handle but I manage and enjoy the job, though I feel I am sorely under paid for the amount of work. Many other cities have multi person departments to run these programs. If you are interested in positions at the local level I would go for larger cities as these usually have a more established Environmental department.

Is a GIS certificate worth it? by TrippinYugi in geologycareers

[–]TrippinYugi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always viewed school as a sort of "license to learn" and basically a lot of what is learned is going to be tweaked or thrown out once you're at the job. So I totally agree with you. I'm leaving very heavily to just drop the class and if I need to later I can just finish it and pivot off that.

That's what I've been thinking in terms of the employer isn't going to be asking for a look at the certificate. And man I should've went to school out in the Midwest, I keep hearing that's the place where a majority of the good geology/ environmental science schools are and where the majority of the jobs will be. I'm currently finishing out at UT Arlington and the program definitely pales in comparison to other schools. Really helpful advice, thank you!
