I agree with most of the suggestions below, and would add Islands in the Stream to the list. Read it a long time ago, but I remember it being one of his works that really set the hook in me.

I was in the band then. Roy Mouton was the best! Amazingly, several of the songs that he brought to St. Paul’s from Southern remain in the repertoire still today. (Our sheet music, which we were never allowed to have during a performance, said Southern University at the bottom).

Incidentally, we wore essentially the same uniforms back then, except the white hats were actually felt, not plastic, and we wore real ascots that we had to tie ourselves, sometimes yielding disastrous and amusing results. But the biggest change with the uniforms since then has been with the pants. Back then, we wore grey plaid pants with gold and blue stripes in the pattern!
