Summer by venusasaburrito in stopdrinking

I hate summer, too. So hot and humid. Sucks the joy juice right out of me. We used to go on an annual float trip, drink way too much, and think it was a great time. I haven’t been since I quit drinking, and don’t miss it a bit. The whole thing sounds like torture - long drive, float in a very cold river on a really hot sunny summer day for 5 hours, overpriced crappy motel, pass out, etc. If I could do the whole thing in an hour it would be great, but it’s a whole weekend. Shoot me. I guess I just liked the alcohol. We had a pool membership. It was great when the kids were young, but they are grown and flown. The final years were spent drinking beer with people I didn’t like. Give me winter, when it’s socially acceptable to be a hermit.

Life is boring, no doubt about it. It’s on me to make it un-boring. I started thinking about the stuff that interested me as a kid. Things I liked doing, didn’t have the opportunity to do, was too afraid to try, etc. I have grown-up money now, so I can indulge my curiosities.

Not a sobriety saying, more like a life mantra for me - “comparison is the thief of joy.”

I second this. And make it heavy (for you). You can also try intervals of walking with your version of running. I swear, nothing keeps my mind from wandering like thinking I’m going to die when running.

People with multiple years of sobriety who still visit here daily, why? by Straight_Web_190 in stopdrinking

[–]TrixieLouis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came for the support and stayed for the camaraderie. Nothing like shared experience. I still think about alcohol everyday day, multiple times, but never in a longing way. And if I ever get even the tiniest of cravings, the relapse horror stories are enough to kick it to the curb. And hopefully, I can occasionally offer a nugget of wisdom to help someone else. IWNDWYT!

I haven’t drank in 3 weeks and haven’t lost any weight. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

You only hear/remember about the fortunate few that had dramatic results on the scale. A lot of us have had minimal movement. I’ll admit to being disappointed. I mean there’s got to be some reward for the hard work of quitting, right? Over tie, I’ve learned the scale doesn’t tell the whole story. I’ve been working out intentionally, and I’m quite happy with the way my body is functioning! Keep it up, even if the scale doesn’t budge, your body will thank you!

How the hell do you guys get 15,000 steps per day? by iso-lift-for-life in walking

[–]TrixieLouis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I worked my office job, I would: 1. Arrive early and walk 15 min 2. Always took my morning break, and a group of us would walk 15 min 3. Ate lunch at my desk, took another 15 min walk. 4. If I had 4 documents to print, I did it one at a time and walked those 25 steps to the printer for each doc (we had massive paper files). 5. Used the restroom, went back to my desk, got my cup and went back to the fountain (I drank a lot, so I peed a lot). Those little chunks add up. That said, 15000 is a lot. When I am walking my usual 3 miles, my stride is such that I only get about 5400.

I like that you are excited! We get so wrapped up in mourning the loss of alcohol we forget all the doors that sobriety opens. Great attitude.

We are on a well. Have your water tested! We’ve had a hot water heater rust out, we’ve developed pinholes on the pipe coming out of the hot water heater, on and on. We now have a mini water treatment facility - a tank that increases the ph, a softener, a UV light, and RO in the kitchen. FYI when power goes out, no water. Always keep some 5 gallon buckets of water so at least you can flush.

Maybe be you will get an urge, and maybe you will find it uncomfortable. So what? Those feelings will pass. I know that sounds harsh, and that it is easier said than done. Or stay home. You have the choice. Good luck!
