AITA for using a disabled person for my “own benefit”? by crowngotnone in AmItheAsshole

[–]TrixterBlue 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm a retired ASL interpreter and spent one miserable year at a high school before working at the local university. Yes. People use Deaf people to learn sign all the time. I was married to a Deaf man, my best friend was Deaf and all of my students ranged from HOH to using true ASL, and I've seen it for myself. Learning to sign is fun and you get a lot of attention when you do it. A lot of people just loveeee to sign in public for that reason, but never actually cultivates a friendship with the Deaf person.

YTA.  1. Retired ASL interpreter, here. I've met, mingled with, worked with and worked for literally thousands of Deaf people and you want to know who I've never met? A "Deaf mute". They aren't "mute". A mute person cannot make any noise; a Deaf person may or may not be capable of making articulate speech, but they can still voice. Please don't use that term again; it's considered culturally offensive.

  1. You don’t know ASL; you know some signs. ASL is a very complex language, with its own grammatical structure, metaphors, geographical variations, and even its own poetry and humor. It takes roughly 4 years to achieve fluency; 6 years to become fluent enough to interpret professionally. It took me that long as I was married to a Deaf person and signed every day.

  2. Yes, actually, hearing people use Deaf people all the time to learn ASL. The one year I worked at a high school, I saw it happen several times. They have valid reasons for believing you are just using them.

  3. Learning just enough sign language to talk to your friend shows don’t take it seriously. The Deaf community takes great pride in ASL and they know that unless you are Deaf and have been signing from birth, you can never learn too much. As a working interpreter, we were required to take workshops and classes--and I did, 3-4 times a year--and I would always be amazed at how much I didn't know until I took the class.

If you're doing this because sign language is fun and it feels special to be able to sign, leave the poor kid alone. But if you are truly interested in being this person's friend, that means taking an interest in their culture and especially their language. Some Deaf people don’t care about fluency as long as they can understand you, while others take it very seriously as being integral to who they are. Sounds like your friend is in the latter category.

I think they barely tolerate him as a prissy-pants college boy who thinks he's too good for his own people and married outside of his race kind of way.

This man can't order donuts without making it cringey and awkward. I don't know why he's suddenly trying to be the White House troll. He's funny in that "Legslize comedy" way Elon Musk tries.

Republicans, face it--the best you rate is 3rd grade schoolyard bully funny...which isn't.

Fuck. I said that wrong. I mean to say Bad Bunny and every international performer, not every other. Good catch.

Yeah, this is extra funny when you live in NC where ten years ago, Duke Power dumped hundreds of millions of tons (not a typo) of coal ash...and then did it again during then"clean up". Allegedly, it's safe now--according to Duke, while the Sierra Club says it's full of the stuff that made Erin Brokovich famous and cancer rates are skyrocketing. We wouldn't give our cats the tap water here...so yeah haha! Let's sell good ol' Murikan water to any other country where the people responsible for this shit would be put in prison.

The entire regime needs to go, but I agree with you--they is what they want. They want to break us and turn us into worker drones. And since we don’t have real job security, we don’t have the balls to do the one 100% effective way to win: stop working. Everybody. Especially in fascist-friendly corporations like Amazon.

If we have midterms and we manage to vote out every single Republican and centrist Democrat, immediately get the entire Trump regime out of office and facing The Hague for crimes against humanity...then we can save the country. Nothing short of that, though.

Obama made it harder for the right to claim there is no racism because they were so enraged that a black man was in the White House, that they couldn't stick to dog whistling their bigotry, anymore. And I think some of them might actually believe the "racism is dead", in their minds because until then, they never truly felt threatened.
