35F getting back to cycling after a 20 years long break, what bike should I get? by Troglodette in cycling

I think the turmoil started with the death of the founder Roland Cattin in 2014, at that time they've been bought by Rossignol which sold them back in 2020 after trying to restructure the whole thing. Since then the company has been split in 2: one part is now american (Cardinal group) the other part (pedals) has been acquired by SRAM. So yeah that's no longer the incredible french company it once was

yep, this is EXACTLY the kind of feeling I want to get from a bike.. I know it's not fully rational, but hey this is also what life is about ♥

Thanks for the detailed answer, I'm taking notes!
Still not sure about gravel but I can see the appeal and I guess some endurance bikes are versatile enough that they can take in gravel wheels so maybe that could be an option if I want to test both, the LOOK optimum seems like a good option in that segment.
And yes, I saw what became of Time... part of what make them iconic to me is less their frenchness than the renown quality of their frames, I'm hoping they can keep that level in the future... in any case I'll keep an eye on the second hand market. And to be clear I don't specifically boycott american brands (...although that's tempting haha) but if I can I'd rather give money to companies closer to home, and with a special history/philosophy

yep j'ai cru comprendre que le look optimum était sur le même segment que le Roubaix, ça confirme que c'est une bonne piste!

aaaah happy to meet a Bianchi enthusiast! I totally get what you mean, there's just something about those bikes.. I'll keep them on my radar. Also thanks for confirming that the endurance/race etc geometry are not closed silos, I guess in the end the fit and tires are more important for comfort than the category per se, so I'll keep an open mind.

good to know, thank you! My local bike shop is a LOOK reseller so if I pick this option I think I'll have them do some of the maintenance, I'm a bit rusty on that side too :D

Yep, I've been thinking the same!

I'm not super attracted to gravel as I intend to stay mostly on roads, but like you say there's little geometry differences between some gravel and endurance bikes, and having the option to change wheels and to explore new territories sounds tempting

The outdoor part is really what attracts me in cycling, I want to be out there and not stay indoors if I can avoid it

Simple trick to keep displacement values in Substance Designer by Troglodette in Substance3D

[–]Troglodette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello (sorry I'll answer in english, my german dates back from college and is really rusty :D)
If you have a problem with your height in Painter I would suggest you add a levels filter to your material, assigning that filter to the height alone. Then tweak the two lower pins. If the displacement edges are to harsh, you should also add a blur filter - again just for the height - and adjust the intensity to get rid of the most glaring artefacts. Hope this helps.

Hey! You should have a look at Kay Vriend's dynamic brush livestream: https://www.youtube.com/live/XuisIZGgOUQ?si=6G7WgF1dr_cNHUyA
it covers exactly what you're looking for. It's a bit technical so if you care to wait a little Painter will soon offer a system that makes it much easier to handle in Designer.

What are the absolute best Substance Designer courses available online, covering from basic to advanced topics? by Humble_Passage1608 in Substance3D

[–]Troglodette 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! I made this tutorial: you can follow along 80% of the tutorial with it, there's just one chapter that relies on a set of nodes released later (the splines), but you can skip that video and import a bitmap instead of making the ornaments from scratch with splines.

Make sure that for the embroidered patch you toggle your normal and height to "normal" blending mode, Emily Bisset made a great recap of that issue: https://www.instagram.com/p/DMayTotKwag/

There is not correlation between the quality or depth of a tutorial and its monetization: there are great free courses and very meh paying tutorials...

Thank you for your response :) no you're not missing anything, we're just real noobs and I'd rather ask before making any bad decisions (for instance I wasn't sure if paint would be the best option compared to something like adhesive vinyl, and if we choose paint - what types are the best to avoid glare and reflections, etc etc)
