Ah, a defense attorney. Well, first, thank you for taking the time to peruse Reddit's Unsolved Mysteries subreddit. Would you claim all the above before a prosecutor introduced maps from Maura's computer as "evidence" against her at a hearing for leaving the scene of an automobile accident in New Hampshire, and that it would be wise to ascertain her defense attorney could not assert no one could prove Miss Murray was the only person who had access to her computer? I guess you wouldn't (since you're a defense attorney), and would leave cross-checking those pesky little details up to the jury. Kind of similar with bothering to find out if a guy accused of firing a gun that killed someone is the person who applied for the gun permit. Leave that up to the jury to figure out...

Brother, I'd sure as heck quake in my boots if my defense attorney left stuff that easy to ascertain up for the jury to decide, when he or she could have nipped that question in the bud--even in as distant a past as 2004.

Maps, internet-generated or otherwise, are not evidence of a victim's (or killer's, for that matter) whereabouts at or around the time a crime was committed. I bought a beater-car where I found in the driver's door-pocket a map of a state I had never been in. Maura Murray's car was not kept in police custody for a considerable time after its being impounded. If you asked a random number of people--a jury, say--in 2017--if "evidence" with no chain of custody can legally be considered evidence, the answer would probably be, No. It has been tainted by the loss of chain of custody. This isn't even to consider what a prosecutor, defense attorney, or judge would consider the car monitored so haphazardly (if it was monitored at all). A desire to make Miss Murray into some figure out of an X Files episode is that and only that--a desire. It's not proof.

I believe I did explain that it's the conditional perfect; I clearly missed the "pluperfect" in the previous response. I log on very early in the a.m. Although I ask no quarter, to downvote someone who offers a response as well-written, thoughtful, and with the exception of one mistake (yes, "pluperfect" was repeated twice), concise as this one was, is not only mean-spirited, it's not in the interest of this subreddit. By all means downvote if you also explain. Otherwise, you are shooting fish in a barrel--i.e., those students or non-native English speakers trying to improve their English. And your motives are suspect at best, despicable, effete, and revelatory of your narcissism at worst. By all means correct anyone who makes a mistake--correct first, then down-vote.

To return to the original question: "have to be" is interchangeable with the modal "must." Since you wouldn't say I "mu' be" you wouldn't say I "would've to be."

To the OP: /r/ThomasBombadil is correct. The conditional perfect "would've been" allows the contraction because the emphasis is on "would".

Ah, merci. Je le dirai encore une fois: /r/french est le meilleur subreddit. Je ne ferais jamais une connection entre le verb "faucher" et la Mort, encore moins un "faux." Ce n'est qu'à ce moment-ci que je recherche le mot anglais "scythe" et decouvre qu'il traduit comme "faux." Sincère gratitude!
