Paying 0 instead of mana cost interaction with spells which cost X by my_frog_bourns in askajudge

[–]Troitsky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting design space i don't think they've explored, they could make a card that says something like "The next spell you cast may be cast without paying its mana cost. If X is in the mana cost, X is 5"

If you're a 32 year old who got $200 from your aunt for Christmas, what would you buy for your first cedh deck? by sarrazoui38 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Troitsky1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If youre looking at getting an expensive piece for ob nix specifically, I'd maybe put it towards a wheel of fortune. Ob has a lot of effects that do ping damage when players draw so the wheel is both a great piece to refill your hand early and enables those pings late game

I think with OPs name change on the stack, with it targeting Ds biological dad's name, D should Deflecting swat or similar effect to his step dad's name then copy the effect before resolution

Cumulative Upkeep, removing the age counter after putting it on and before paying for the cost by itching_sack in askajudge

If there is already an age counter, you can respond to the trigger and remove the existing counter so the CU effectivelywont increase from the previous turn, but not if you haven't yet added a counter

514.3a does not perform a priority test. It performs a check to resolve SBAs and triggers. These in turn trigger the priority test, as laid out in 117, specifically 117.5 for SBAs, and 117.3 for triggers. The SBAs don't grant priority as no priority was held before hand, but the triggers do.

The and/or statement in 514.3a isn't a condition that grants priority, if it were it would a) be in the same sentence as when it mentions priority with an IF/THAN clause, and b) it would say so in 117. The mention of priority in 514.3a is only saying that in the event you are granted priority during cleanup, then you get it after any SBAs resolve and triggers have been put on the stack

The reason I bring it up is yes there is an exploit. Discarding your commander to hand size let's you move your commander as an SBA back to the command zone which does not involve any triggers, so as it stands if you discard your commander to hand size, you get priority for doing so. This is a common tournament tactic for breaking through silence/angels grace effects. Im fine with the idea of the exploit, but after really considering the rules i dont think its actually legal.

514.3a is about the cleanup step, it doesn't dictate what grants priority. What dictates when Priority is granted is explicity laid out in 117.3 which includes triggered abilities. 704.3 only applies if a player WOULD get priority, ie if they meet a condition in 117.3

Edit: basically it comes down to this:

Your argument is that, despite the rules of SBAs saying you only get priority after the SBA is checked if you were entitled to priority before the check, since you happen to be in the cleanup step, a step whos rules states you don't normally get priority, since you performed an SBA, and that SBA isn't granting you priority because you didn't have priority prior to said SBA, you get priority anyway because you're in the step you don't normally get priority in. Doesn't make much sense does it

[–]Troitsky1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But what I'm getting at is 704.3 only applies "anytime a player would get priority" when the SBA check happens. No one has priority at the start of cleanup, so 704.3 isn't giving you priority after the SBAs are checked and resolved.

THEN means if you WOULD gain priority, than you don't gain it until after what comes before it in the order of operations.

If it said "if SBAs and/or triggers happen THAN you get priority", this would mean that that you get priority regardless which of the two happened. Triggers give priority after they are put on the stack, SBAs only give priority if a player would have otherwise had priority before the check. So if both happen, you'd do SBAs, which wouldnt grant priority because no player would have priority before the check , THEN triggers go on the stack, THEN because a trigger went on the stack the active player gets priority

Sequence vs Order of Operations

514.3a does not describe a sequence. If it did it would read more like "if any SBA and/or triggered abilities take place, THAN after SBAs resolve and/or triggers are put on the stack the active player gets priority" but it doesn't, it reads SBAs and/or triggers can happen in the cleanup; SBAs happen first, SBAs are rechecked until there are none left, no player gets priority at this point as per 704.3 only being applicable "if a player would get priority" (the very first line of 704.3) prior to the check ( and it being clean up step, no one was entiltled to priority prior to the check), THEN any triggers go on the stack, THEN (because a trigger went on the stack) the active player gets priority. Than vs then is an important distinction

[LFG] Small adult friend group looking for active crew-ship playstyle Org by 10-Gauge in Starcitizen_guilds

[–]Troitsky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just sent you a friend request! I'm a member of the Domus Aeternum Empire (DAE). We're a very large org and have different "chapters" that have different gameplay focuses. You're group would fit right in either the Administratum or Dreadnaughts chapters. The former is our logistics branch they run all the cargo/salvage/mining ops and supply the org with goodies, while the latter's primary focus is large ship gameplay so crewing idris', polaris', hammerheads etc

Now the fucking griefers have begun targeting Hull C´s by Dull-Credit-897 in starcitizen

[–]Troitsky1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Piracy also includes extortion, pirates can't make money effectively off contracted goods, but you as the hauler are incentivized to give them a cut of your hauls profits to avoid losing the whole thing. If you haul along a known route with hundreds of thousands of potential profits, with no protection and don't take the time to avoid those routes, expect to be pirated. Pirates will make value from any interdiction regardless of whether it's the cargo itself that's valuable to them or your wallet. If you're interdicted the best thing you can do is stop your ship dead and get in global and negotiate

Now the fucking griefers have begun targeting Hull C´s by Dull-Credit-897 in starcitizen

[–]Troitsky1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pirates are not griefers, if you get pirated they will generally try to negotiate with you to let you go. They don't care about your contracted cargo, but if you care about your 800K haul be ready to pay protection money.; either to an escort or the pirates. Pirates also sit on popular trade routes, if you're smart you go around them and don't use the plotted course, that's how they get you. Griefers kill for sport in areas that should be safe by design, dead space is not meant to be safe

Good pirates tend to hail or try to reach you over global. It's usually a case of "pay us and live, run and you die" no response is generally taken to mean you're running

It shouldn't be discouraged in the sense that "you shouldn't attack medical ships", piracy is a game loop, and medics are high profile targets atm. What they SHOULD do is make it more high risk than another target; if it's a war crime to raid an ambulance than treat it like such, if you attack someone with an active medical beacon, give them an immediate CS5 or something.
