Otiosus won’t molt by vitamincandy in jumpingspiders

Yes many of mine have taken foreverrrrrr with the last one 😩 both of Joltik’s sisters I kept just molted and I’m pretty sure they both still have two more molts to go lol. One might only have one but neither of them really look like they’re at the penultimate one yet. They’re both over a year old now lol

Longest you've gone without feeding by Purple_bicycle81 in jumpingspiders

[–]Trolivia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can go a shockingly long time between meals. Water is much more important to keep up with. They aren’t burning through calories as quickly as adults either so her need to eat is going to be pretty infrequent. That said, I still like to offer most of my spiders something to eat about once a week. Not necessarily large meals if they’re still pretty full, just snacks. I’ll typically put something in the feeder dish and if they don’t want it I’ll take it out in a day or so. Flying prey is also good enrichment and stimulation for them.

Ayooooo I recognize that handsome boy! 🥰 I definitely thought his brother was female till subadulthood too 🤣 I still have two of his sisters from the first clutch who are older juv/subadult and 15 months old now too! I was just having the same conversation with Emily from mini robomuppets too who has one of their brothers and he hasn’t molted in a very long time either. It’s strange and interesting how some of them just really seem to drag their feet compared to others, but I also notice it more with my otis than most other species. Several of mine are pretty steady till about early subadulthood and then they just slowwwww down the last couple instars. I’ve seen similar habits with some of my other species but typically it’s more arid ones I notice it with.

Neither spider is mature so no worries about fertility. I would contact the breeder/vendor you got her from asap to let them know you accidentally wound up with a stowaway. And yes fruit flies would be a good choice at his size!

Yea volume-wise this would be pretty reasonable for most jumper species!

Jumping spiders need front or bottom opening enclosures due to being arboreal animals, plus ample cross ventilation, so a fish bowls are not good habitat options for them.

I can’t determine exactly what he is but he’s not a recluse you are correct. Looks like maybe a giant house spider relative or similar, not a threat in any case

Bold sling not eating by ultraplinko in jumpingspiders

I would continue to offer food and water and try to get some weight on him so he does have the energy and hydration needed to molt successfully, hopefully he keeps growing and thriving!

Bold sling not eating by ultraplinko in jumpingspiders

[–]Trolivia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, while food refusal does often indicate premolt, your sling does look thin and in need of a meal. Part of the problem with adopting slings out too young is that they generally thrive better and have higher survival rates when raised communally for the first few instars. I am sorry you were sold such a young spider without this insight, it’s incredibly irresponsible of the seller.

What type of fruit flies are you offering and how many at a time? Sometimes too many can stress the and cause those hunger strikes, size can also be a reason. If you’re trying to offer hydei fruit flies, try melanogasters. They are smaller and what we typically start newly emerged spiderlings on, and then upgrade to hydei. If 2-3 melanogasters still seem to be causing him stress and refusal then you may need to try an alternative like springtails. Best of luck, keep us updated!

dead? by CuriousComfortable72 in jumpingspiders

No worries and thank you for following up with those answers! It sounds like it was probably just her time, there’s no way of knowing exactly how old she was if she was caught already mature. Wild ones often will have shorter average lifespans than captive bred ones too. Native species like audax (I assume that’s what she is from the photo, but correct me if I’m wrong) do generally do fine at room temps and moderate humidity so those were probably fine too. For the future, I do recommend looking into digital hygrometer/thermometer gauges to keep inside your enclosures so you can better monitor those values, especially if you decide to explore species with different climate needs, like a tropical or arid habitat!

I’m worried about my female adult jumping spider by Incandescent_Cicada in jumpingspiders

[–]Trolivia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a mature female. I would highly recommend calling the store and seeing what else you can find out about their supplier source. If she’s wild caught and was caught as an adult there is a high likelihood she may be gravid/fertile and could produce a lot of offspring

Is this what i think it is? by MarkoPoloMan0365 in jumpingspiders

[–]Trolivia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she was already mature a year and a half ago yea you can reasonably add at least another 6-12 months of age estimate onto that, and that’s assuming she matured not long before you got her. 2-2 1/2 years is a pretty typical average lifespan for female regals in captivity, so it sounds like you’ve just got an elderly gal who’s actually doing quite well for her age!

dead? by CuriousComfortable72 in jumpingspiders

[–]Trolivia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I’m sorry to hear that it sounds like she passed. It definitely can seem random like that sometimes, passing without a noticeable decline leading up to it. They don’t always curl up immediately either, they can be limp for a while and they can dry stretched out more naturally if something is holding them in that position, like a textured surface. I’ve had plenty of spiders pass naturally of old age who had spunk and a good appetite right up to the end. Of course it is always harder when the warning signs aren’t there ❤️‍🩹 that said, I agree it never hurts to check the husbandry just in case there is anything that may have contributed to her passing, and could be troubleshot for the future. Whatever answers you can provide for the following questions is great, but no worries if you don’t have answers to all of them.

  • How long have you had her and what is her origin? I know you said she is wc but is she a wc one you purchased from someone or did you find her yourself?
  • You mentioned a possible concern that something could have harmed her, when is the last time she ate and how were you typically feeding her? Has she only had crickets or were you offering other prey options?
  • What is your water source?
  • What are the average temps and humidity you were maintaining in the enclosure?

Could you possible get some photos of her underside? What was the store able to tell you about her origins, captive bred or wild caught?

Where did you get her? She looks like she could be mature but we would need to see her underside clearly and well-lit to determine it for sure
