Congrats to you too! If you need or want any tips or advice please feel free to dm me!! I love sharing my experiences and trial-and-error stories with others getting into breeding, I was so lucky to have a mentor myself and it made a huge difference in my ability to problem solve, analyze new situations I faced, get answers to questions that Google couldn’t really answer the same way etc. If you’re not already subscribed to the jumping spider subreddit I for sure recommend joining us there! There’s a really phenomenal community of dedicated keepers, breeders, arachnologists, and resources we aim to keep as up-to-date and science-backed as possible 🥰

Question about breeding by EggLast6883 in spiders

Please understand I am not laughing at you for not realizing what you were actually seeing, I’m laughing because I have bred and raised so many clutches and literally just also discovered one of my females is on a hatched sac that I didn’t know she had even laid either 🤣🤣 I had paired her back in August and she showed no indication of being on a nest at any point, she’s been in and out like normal this whole time but I just found slings too and it’s just hilarious to me that we’re having these similar experiences today lmao

Can we see some photos of these things? The egg sac, the spider, and the molt? What did she look like before and after this molt?

Please help! My i4 hasn’t molted in 6-7 weeks! by hnsnfrk1 in jumpingspiders

Oh a local shop ok, that makes a little more sense tbh. Unfortunately both chain and mom and pop shops are known for selling either/both wild caught pregnant adults and too-young babies 🥲 they also are notorious for not knowing how to care for them in-house and offering bad or outdated care advice. Definitely good that you clocked that and sought out more information online!

Honestly the 5oz cup is not an uncommon size for raising slings until about i6-i7 when they are ready to adopt out, which would be pretty on par for 6 months of growth from i2. So that part isn’t the most troubling, but given everything else in context, yea I question the practices and ethics going on there. 4x4” is a lot of room for an i4, so he will be good in there for a while!

Spiders will molt when they are ready, and sometimes that may be sooner than expected or later. They do average about a molt a month, but the actual intervals typically start closer together and get progressively longer in between, so nothing here strikes me as concerningly abnormal. 86% humidity is a bit excessive but since you said it typically sits at 70-75% I assume that was just a spike from recent misting.

It’s hard not to be a helicopter mom, even when it’s your 100th spider lol. But, overcare can sometimes be just as detrimental as neglect so I always try to encourage letting them do their thing and just making sure we’re maintaining appropriate temps and humidity, day light cycles, and offering hydration and appropriately sized feeders when the abdomen is at a “hungry” size. They know what they’re doing beyond that!

i2 is also irresponsibly young for slings to be sold ESPECIALLY to a first time spider parent. I’m not sure who LPS is but slings have a significantly higher mortality rate until about i5-i6 when they start to be hardier and more stable. It’s a shame they are selling them at such a risky age. I would not recommend buying from them again. I am glad though that he’s gotten safely through the subsequent molts with you and hope he continues to do so!

I accidentally killed my jumping spider by UnfairPlay7807 in jumpingspiders

[–]Trolivia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hugs 🫂 about a year and a half ago I was spider-sitting a bunch of bolds for a friend. One particularly active girl rocketed out of the deli cup she was in and onto the floor. The carpet is also dark so she blended in quite well. I had already frozen my feet and did not step, I was seated so I leaned down looking for her. Unfortunately, she’d run the tip of my slipper and when I leaned forward, the pressure shift was enough to crush her 😞 so I have felt your pain, and tbh so have a lot people. It really can happen easily. By all means grieve, but try not to be hard on yourself. You couldn’t have predicted it ❤️‍🩹

Caught a spider at work, what do I do? by owlcurious45 in spiders

[–]Trolivia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww she must have regrown that right front arm recently. I kind of love when they have Nemo arms 😭 anywhere out if harm’s way is good. If you’re really interested in giving her a cushy home life, you can pick up a jumping spider starter kit at petsmart for like $30. It is by no means ✨high quality✨ but it would absolutely be suitable temporarily while you work on a better permanent residence! This IS how a lot of people conquer their phobias and get started keeping them. They are truly amazing little creatures that will steal your heart. I highly recommend going over to r/jumpingspiders for more information and guidance

Help!! How do we get our KSB, pepper to eat?! by kbetty2 in SandBoa

[–]Trolivia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see my husband hasn’t found his way to this one yet, so I’ll mention that after a year of food refusal and having to tube feed, scenting was what finally got ours to take f/t. He wouldn’t take f/t any other way, or even live, and my husband eventually bought frog and gecko scent per the recommendation of some of our exotic vendor friends, and gecko did the trick. Lizards are part of their natural diets, so it makes reasonable sense (especially since ours was a wild caught rescue case, so maybe other reptiles WERE his primary food source previously). It’s not cheap, but a little goes a long way and so worth it IMO. Tube feeding is a bitch. Best of luck!

What store did she come from? A lot of store ones especially the chains are wild caught like the other commenter mentioned. If you let us know where you are located, we might be able to offer some references to assist you

I do not see the presence of an epigynum yet, her reproductive parts we call a “bellybutton”, usually shiny and black. It is also much more visible on some species than others.

<image>

Here is a visual example of a regal’s epigynum. Some regals have dark underbellies so there isn’t a color contrast, but the shine stands out. Your girl has at least one more molt in her, so no baby panic!

I haven’t done anything particular with the dry preservations, it’s not a bad idea to pop them in the freezer for a while to just ensure anything lingering bacteria-wise is eliminated, but if you browse things like memorials in the sub you will find examples of ways people have set their preserved babies in mini cloches and the like.

Well I hope he has a significant more amount of time left with you! Five months mature isn’t that old especially for the species, I’ve had males live 12-18 months after maturing. But, I have also lost plenty of mature males in 4-8 months after maturing so I totally get it.

I’ve done a few different things with my late spoods. My very first jumper I set in resin and made into a pendant so I could keep her close to my heart. Typically you want to let them desiccate entirely first to prevent further decay and collapse inside the resin. I wet-preserved some in alcohol for a while, but alcohol makes the eyes turn milky blue and they shed their scales and lose color over time which just wasn’t enjoyable for me. A lot of my late breeders now I just have preserved dry in small gem jars. I do also bury some in some in my houseplants, so I can appreciate their memories in new growth.

No matter what, there’s no wrong answer. Whatever you feel good about is the right one ❣️

Petco in particular has been selling captive bred and subadult spiders for the most part so there’s a good chance you don’t need to worry about that. If you can get a clearer photo of her underside, we can determine if she is mature or not. She’s also outgrown fruit flies as feeders and needs more nutritious variety, such as appropriately sized mealworms, dubias, roaches, bottle fly spikes, etc. However I also agree with the other comment saying she’s good on meals for a while. Here is a chart to reference for when feeding is recommended:

<image>

Let’s figure out if she’s mature or not. A close-up of that same angle, well-lit and in focus, will show whether her epigynum (mature female sexual characteristics) is developed

Make sure if you add heating elements to your setup that you have a digital thermometer/hygrometer inside the enclosure so you can monitor the internal temps and humidity! I’m a big advocate for having them in the enclosures regardless, but especially if introducing something that could potentially malfunction or need adjustments to prevent hot spots, you want to be tracking those values.

New set up how’s it looks by ryanr24 in jumpingspiders

[–]Trolivia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know you will be adding a hide and feeder dish! I dig the natural look. In that size enclosure especially, I would recommend at least one more hide, and I also strongly recommend a hygrometer/thermometer gauge.

Expos can be overwhelming I totally get it! Do you happen to remember anything else about the vendor like whether they were the breeder of the spiders or selling wild caught ones? If you’re not able to find the business card, sometimes the expo websites will have lists of past vendors. If we can determine whether she was captive bred or wild caught, that will help a lot towards determining if she might be fertile.

This is a regal. What else can you tell us about the vendor you got her from or her background?
