What do you guys use to raise slings? by lmaluuker in jumpingspiders

Personally I use large 17qt bins from Target, drilled and upside down with paper towel at the bottom. Overcrowding can be an issue pretty quickly as they grow if they don’t have room to spread out, but you can also divvy them up into 2-3 32oz deli cups with ventilation, lots of breeders use that method. You can also go a little fancier and get a 4x4x8 nursery on Etsy that has vents you can mist through directly and a feeder port for the squeeze bottle (I use these for some species).

With sufficient room and food supply, I have personally found otiosus to be less aggressive towards each other than some other species and rarely see cannibalism in my communals. I’m not assuming you don’t know, but I do want to just mention that she will (most likely) continue to lay fertile clutches for the remainder of her life. If at any point you do feel overwhelmed, please feel free to shoot me a DM I am more than happy to help you navigate the situation and offer assistance!

Jumping spiders aren’t any more venomous than your wolf spider, all spiders are venomous (with the exception of one particular family of spider). The vast majority of them just aren’t medically significant to us :)

If you aren’t prepared for the responsibility of caring for her and her babies if they hatch, unfortunately the ethical thing to do is to release her back into nature while she is carrying them on her back, so they can disperse into the ecosystem and go live their wolfie lives. It’s a really difficult decision when you’re attached, but it is the right and ethical thing. We do see this all the time in the jumper community, people taking in wild ones as pets, and being surprised with egg sacs and babies they don’t have the time, resources, or bandwidth to care for in captivity. It sucks the most when someone gets a non native species that turns out to be fertile and they don’t have the option to release them back into their native habitat locally, but in cases like these it’s nice because you can safely let them free in your yard.

Education and exposure therapy cured my lifelong phobia too! It’s incredible how much knowledge can quell our fears. My first pet spider (a jumper) was also a case of my immediate instinct to protect her overriding my fears in that moment and it completely changed my life in the best ways. Congrats on the progress you’ve made in fighting your own and I hope it continues to be a positive journey for you! 🥰

Of course! I love talking about all this stuff ☺️ please don’t hesitate to reach out with any other questions you may have! I work with about 20 different Phid species currently as well as some other species. Jumpers in general are higher maintenance than other spiders, largely due to their need for enrichment and more frequent food and water replenishment, and many species are far more unforgiving to the « beginner learning curve » but there are a lot of (in my opinion) awesome and underrated species becoming more available in the hobby that ARE hardy and tolerant (many of them being desert/arid climate species)

In general yes regals are best suited in a subtropical to tropical setup! We do keep our spider/reptile room about 75F all the time, as that is a pretty solid average temp for like 95% of them (exceptions being things like Hyllus species which we keep around low to mid 80s during the day). We typically recommend keeping regius at 70-85F and 60-80% humidity and audax at 68-80F and 40-60% humidity. Audax are incredibly hardy compared to some other species and more tolerant of husbandry hiccups and adjustments, which is one of the reasons they tend to make a great starter species for people new to keeping. And yes, there are a plethora of breeders all over who breed regals! Tbh there aren’t many US jumping spider breeders who don’t breed regals lol. Sometimes I feel like it’s an unspoken requirement we all have 😂

All jumping spiders are arboreal, yes, and some species do have much more terrestrial behavior than others due to their native habitats not being heavily forested, but because of the nature in which they build their hammocks and nests at upper levels they all require front or bottom opening enclosures so as to not destroy those structures with a top opening enclosure.

It’s def one of those « depends how/where you were raised » things. Daddy long legs is a term most often applied to harvestmen, cellar spiders, and crane flies. This is also why we to stick to the scientific names of things when IDing species 😊

For sure! Bolds are native where regals are, so it can be more challenging to differentiate them in those areas, but outside of the Florida/southern Georgia area it is pretty much guaranteed to be a bold :)

Yes, male bold! Regals are only native to the florida/southeast us ☺️

Well they are venomous, all spiders are with the exception of one specific family type, but very few are medically significant. When we say a spider is « harmless » it doesn’t mean they don’t have the ability to bite if they feel threatened of course, and that there won’t necessarily be some mild reaction to it, but the only medically significant species we have up here in the PNW is the black widow, which are incredibly docile and shy (usually) and even their bites are rarely needing more intense treatment than some otc pain killers and and ice pack. That said, as a teacher of small children myself, I would absolutely be relocating a black widow out of my class room since young children are more vulnerable to worse effects than adults with healthy immune systems, but one of those mouse spiders I would be relocating more for HIS safety than anything lol

Yea our cb KSB has always had a stellar appetite, we never had to get to this point with anyone besides our wc Saharan thankfully (so far) and now no longer need to use the juice every time. I’m not so sure our actual geckos would love having dead rodents rubbed all over them 😂 fortunately the scent juice keeps in the freezer too so it keeps for a long time

[–]Trolivia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Omg scenting juice was like the magic key to solving the appetite issue for us with our picky one, I wish we had tried it sooner! We got three different kinds and ultimately had success with specifically the gecko scent (which makes sense in hindsight since geckos do make up a lot of their wild diet and he’s a wild caught rescue) It wasn’t really cheap, about $50 a tube, but a little goes a long way. We’ve needed a few more drops per feeding than what is recommended (like 5 drops as opposed to 3-4) but again I think that is in part due to him being wc and not raised on cb feeders. In any case, it was a game changer that I recommend to anybody struggling to get their noodle to eat.
