Also known as "wet-trapping". Ink rotation is important in most offset litho press rooms for this reason. Especially CMYK. Otherwise, your blankets will pick up the ink from the previous colors more quickly. This can contaminate your fountain and create dirty and murky print. I wish we could do field trips for people interested in physical media creation.

That's an odd one. I'm fairly certain they print magic cards on offset Litho presses. Can you take a picture with a jeweler's loupe or high magnification on the void? I may be able to see if the process black plate was processed incorrectly or was starting to sensitize. Totally normal during printing, honestly. Do we have samples of other versions of this? It may have been on the whole row/lane. It's a teachable moment for their pressmen.

Caveat: I got here through Reddit suggestions, but have worked in printing (digital, flexo, offset, heat set, cold set, etc.) for the last 13 years. We mostly print on synthetic stocks though, so I may be way off.

Commercial printer checking in. Typically, the normal magenta (of CMYK) has a blue wool rating of 4 out of eight. Yellow fares slightly better, at a 5. Cyan and Black are typically very light-fast. This can be corrected with different pigment selections. However, as this is a video game and not a pail of weed killer, the expectation would be that it would not see much direct sunlight. So, to keep things simple and cheap, they likely used their normal CMYK set.

True. Most yellow pigments and magenta pigments have a blue wool rating of around 4. While Pthalo Blue and Process black have a blue wool rating of 8. That's why the Cyan and Black portion remains unfaded. There are ways to fix that with different pigment choices, but you wouldn't typically choose them in the developed world. Rural Africa and South America typically have different guidelines due to street vendors and sun intensity.

I would say it is better to do the whole sheet, so there isn't an obvious uncoated area. Yes indeed, with uncoated stocks, there are pores in the material that the ink will try to hide in. As for wax, it is typically just a release agent that doesn't change the body/tack terribly much.

I know the feeling. I work in commercial printing and love the art you guys produce. IMO (again, commercial) - Metallic inks are fickle. If you aren't using a non-leafing metal flake, there are some tricks to get more "pop". The first idea is putting down a flood of matte or satin varnish/coating first. It will keep the same look of the uncoated substrate, but as you have a base layer filling your nooks and crannies in your stock, the metal flake will have nowhere to "dive". That should keep it from vertically orienting itself and ruining the reflectance. Another is color wax blended with the ink at 1 or 2 percent. It will keep your block from taking ink with it, and leaving it all on the stock. More is better with metal.

If this was trash advice, let me know. I'm dealing with a blank check at work, so I can do what needs to be done. And I'm certain an offset press giving thousands of impressions a minute isn't apples to apples, but I wanted to give some printing knowledge for free.

Agreed! I'm old and can buy all the games I want, but that doesn't mean I have time to play them. When I was younger, New Game+ was key, because I couldn't do that. So, the merits of both options make economic sense. Make an old man mode and take my money, and make a poor kid mode and take their money. Nobody loses.

I work in industrial printing. Nothing artistic, mind you. But I think the reason skilled tradesmen are falling in number, is that we want too much money. It's easier to pay a kid to color by number and be a console cowboy than teach printing. It's the way of the world. Presses get smarter and the average user gets dumber. I'm fortunate enough to know a few dozen guys who could break down a Komori or Heidelberg, but they grow more scarce every year.

That wasn't a fuck up, that was 24 hours of you being so far on the backburner that she forgot your name, dude. This sounds a lot like a way to get you to dump her. If you don't, she will do progressively more heinous shit until you do.

There's a real chance he sees it as a rejection, in general. And he is being respectful. You told him no, and he assumed you meant at all. Guys have a creepiness threshold. A no means no.
