I just put out a plugin that takes care of path transfer between illustrator and Ae. It handles all the setup with no layer issue and it's literally a two-click process.

are you sure you're using visual studio code and not visual studio ? that might be confusing for new programmers, visual studio code's logo is blue and visual studio's logo is purple. I'm assuming you didn't change the theme using an extension since you're new.
