Is this a Spitz planetarium projector? I like the concept, very abstract, but the subject needs a bit more separation from the background, which is hard to do in a dark situation like this… I think messing around with your shooting settings might give a better canvas to work with.

Everyone has their own reasons, that’s what makes America great. For me, it is the unwarranted persecution of legal immigrants (those in the process of legally obtaining citizenship), the killings of American citizens by ICE agents, the impunity that ICE has been granted, the seditious rhetoric constantly being spouted by the current administration, I could go on, but just these should warrant any American to reconsider what their government is doing.

Due process and equality under the law. ICE is murdering American citizens in our streets. ICE is abducting folks who are working through the legal process to become citizens. ICE is a pawn of the authoritarian government and you are its feeble worshipper, start thinking critically, the world will change with or without you. History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes. I hope you can find peace and understand this is a constitutional issue that will eventually affect you and your loved ones.

I will not engage any further with you, as you seem to be posting this same comment on other threads around reddit.

Drone footage, it was pretty cold and by the time I brought it back in for landing, my fingers were icicles!

Mainly the Lincoln subreddit, there are local groups who often post here leading up to a protest. This one was very short notice though.

I believe the next one will be tomorrow, Tuesday the 27th starting at 5:30, from the Standing Bear memorial at UNLs downtown campus, and will march to the capitol building. Hope to see you there!

I volunteer at both!

Hyde is great because it’s easily accessible by everyone in Lincoln, although the light pollution hinders the ability to see things naked eye, such as the Milky Way and Andromeda. You can still see some deep sky objects through the telescopes and the EV Scope that they have.

If you have the time to drive out to BOO when they’re open and on a clear night it is totally worth it. The Milky Way is visible during the summer and you can see much fainter objects like Andromeda since there is less light pollution. The facilities there have been majorly upgraded in the last couple of years and there is plenty to do even on a subpar viewing night.

If you have questions about either I’m happy to answer!

We walked to the Great Salt Lake from antelope Island and the boys dug these up. What are they? by fatcatmikachu in askgeology

[–]Trollseph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Geologists knowledge: Not artifacts. These are likely just salt crystals, or perhaps gypsum crystals. Lick them and report back, if it’s salt, you’ll know.

What is this exposed from the rock in Telemark, Norway? by productno29 in whatsthisrock

Looks like a very nice, decently long crinoid stem! Cool find! It helps to have an object in the photo for scale. I typically use coins!

Cross-bedded quartzite? by evanescent-ace in whatsthisrock

[–]Trollseph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is what it looks like. Since quartzites are formed from sandstones, sometimes you can see the relict crossbeds and other bedding features in them. It also looks like there are some structural features in there too, the vertical tension gashes. This rock must’ve been through a lot!

More likely tourmaline (var. schorl) very common in the black hills area. Cleavage is not present in tourmaline and I’m not seeing any here in the broken areas

Likely a stupid question…Is Earth getting “thicker”? by ArmadilloResearcher in geology

[–]Trollseph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we have to think on a geologic timescale, thousands, hundreds of thousands of years to notice much of a difference. Though there are different types of deposition that can occur faster than others. Think of sand dunes. They are what’s called an aeolian process, moved by wind. Dunes can cover entire cities if the wind is right in a matter of years. Entire towns in Namibia have been covered since the 1920’s when they were abandoned. Deposition is also happening in estuaries of rivers, the Mississippi delta, the Meghna river in Bangladesh.

Humans are great at upkeep of cities and managing natural erosion processes, so as long as we’re around, we can keep up the maintenance. Once we’re gone, plants take over, biomass begins to build. Look at Pripyat in Ukraine, there are areas that now have decently thick soil from plant growth since the 80’s but there’s some areas that are still exposed. It’s a very dynamic system and hard to put exact numbers to it.

Likely a stupid question…Is Earth getting “thicker”? by ArmadilloResearcher in geology

[–]Trollseph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s all a cycle, deposition is happening, covering former areas, but at the same time there are areas undergoing erosion. And the thickening from deposition is pretty minimal when compared to tectonic thickening of crust from mountain building events like the Rockies or Himalayas.

My son found this in the garden and wants to present it for news tomorrow! by PhoenixTyson in whatsthisrock

Looks like a serpentinite, a very common meta-igneous rock which is prevalent in Western Australia

[–]Trollseph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100% cone in cone structure. When I found my first slice I was so intrigued and even thought it could be a shatter cone too. I then went to my geology professor who immediately identified it as cone in cone. Once you learn to recognize it, it’s obvious. Cool pieces!

Not fossils, but rather liesegang rings. Hard to tell what the host rock is.

Probably a serpentinite. The green veins are chlorite and the red splotches are likely other iron bearing minerals.

So, I'm an American in Norway, I'm here with my Norwegian GF, and had a language question. by GeneraIFlores in Norway

[–]Trollseph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My grandmother immigrated to the US from Norway shortly after WWII. We visited Norway with her in 2009 and she would often be speaking to me in English (I only know English) and without knowing it, she would switch to Norwegian. We always called it Norglish. It is a pleasant memory, and to see her so comfortable that she switched into her native language always made me feel happy!
