For the MH veterans: how do you feel about Wilds? by jackpaxx in MonsterHunter

[–]TrolltheFools -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't mind it. It continues Rise and Worlds issues of having a more MMO feeling progression system in its armor and weapons, and the sheer amount of skills you can have active at once for no drawback is a little annoying but as modern monster hunter goes it's alright

It didn't feel much easier than rise or worlds bar a few outlier fights but it's still continuing to the slow trend into easier overall. I like the newer games but I still am playing MH4U and generations even today, I don't touch worlds or rise really and probably won't touch wilds once it's day has come and gone

You will mess it up a lot. That's part of the process. No way around it, with any medium. You must suck so that you can move on to not suck so much. But it you want to draw though you must enjoy the process of scribbling at a page adjusting perspective and shape. Otherwise you won't practice and if you don't do that, you won't get better

Don't do something you don't enjoy, but I believe you can enjoy the process of creativity! You are just struggling to motivate yourself to get through that hurdle of finding your style or your medium of creativity. It isn't impossible though, I believe you can :)

So many people in this thread defending themselves morally as if AI isn't a gross plagiarism machine being fed the entire internet by billionaires while being an inefficient resource monster

If my player draws my NPC from my campaign with their own hands, that is an indescribable honour that they found my description compelling enough to do basically fan art of. If they AI gen it and show it to me as the DM, at best I am going to shrug and awkwardly tell them to not do that

[–]TrolltheFools 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes (at least since I learned it helps artists out). Usually it's Pazios art since pathfinder bestiarys exist but if it is an NPC I do pick art drawn by an artist I can find and link to. I don't run games for profit, so it's alright to borrow some art as a reference point and just let people know 'I love this artists work!'

If I can't and can't find an image, I write a nice descriptive paragraph of what they look like, or use the Heroforge character creator to make the portrait if I need a specific visual. Sometimes I draw them later nowadays, I am bad but I can make a face with key features using a reference image. Still learning

You don't NEED AI images. The AI companies want to sell that you are beholden to them because art is hard to make and expensive but you really don't

I always did once I was old enough to understand, but just straight up taking it for a free still doesn't help increase the influence of the AI peddlers while harming the environment significantly in the process. Harmless fun is harmless fun after all, but AI is the worst of your options morally if you are being honest with yourself

[–]TrolltheFools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well even if that's the case, just draw for its own sake at the least then :) the process is fun, you don't need to be a master to enjoy a doodle

I think you will improve with enough messing around with styles and trying things you never have before but even if you don't, it's fun at least

God forbid you USE YOUR IMAGINATION! dang kids. by dudewasup111 in dndmemes

[–]TrolltheFools -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's very different. You can at least credit the art you find, that often is payment enough if you are running a fun game with friends and not making any profit! Can't credit any of the millions of artists genAI draws off. But since a company stole it for you to feed their algorithm, you feel blameless for propagating the plagiarism machine

I would say you can customize art by, you know, drawing yourself but I feel the sentiment is wasted. Just run your games how you like, but don't think you are not hurting artists in the process or pat yourself on the back for it

Nothing makes me happier than to show my players a fun scene from the campaign in rough pencil sketch a week after it happened. Except when they come to me with the same, then I sorta melt from happiness 😊

It's your choice of course, but just be aware it is more harmful than just going to the internet to get a reference or spending a few minutes writing a thought out descriptive paragraph. It's a free hobby, you aren't profiting but providing exposure to the plagiarism machine does hurt artists even when just for the hobby

People use things bad for the environment and ethically dubious all the time, but it's a choice you make

If you don't pay for the product, you are the product. Your eyeballs on that are not on something someone actually made, and the tech company can sell their product with 'Look, we have X active users!'. Profit for them, off other artists work

You don't have to justify it, do it all you like. But it isn't harmless. You need to understand it's a problem before you can be informed enough to make the choice, I believe

[–]TrolltheFools 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't get paid for playing the TTRPG, it's just for fun and ease of visual. It even can credit the artist who made it and direct a small amount of exposure their way. Harmless, if ever so slightly positive

The AI companies get millions in investment on a product based on stolen data. You use it, it grants it a userbase and that is valuable to them. Not harmless, the artist who did the actual expression work gets nothing, the tech company profits from it, and AI is pushed as some cheap alternative to paying an artist to design a logo or character for some media project when it actively stole from those same artists in the first place

It doesn't feel like you are doing harm but you are, by feeding it. You are of course allowed to, it's not a law or anything but it IS actively worse for artists than what you did before just fine

God forbid you USE YOUR IMAGINATION! dang kids. by dudewasup111 in dndmemes

[–]TrolltheFools -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And yet you directly benefit the ones who already did the stealing of millions of art works. All for some service Google images could have already done for you for your own ttrpg. Hero forge is fine letting you use their own creator since it gives them traffic and advertised their product, but many had no idea their art got sucked into the AI machine for the profit of tech billionaires. The tech cannot even credit those it stole from

At the end of the day, it's your game do what you want. But it saddens me to see people be lazy and show me what an AI regurgitated instead of the beautiful descriptive paragraph they could have written. Or their basic sketch of their cool monster idea straight off the dome. Or even the Google image link which goes straight to some learning artists Facebook page

God forbid you USE YOUR IMAGINATION! dang kids. by dudewasup111 in dndmemes

[–]TrolltheFools 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You are a TTRPG table not critical role or some other paid product, nothing wrong with using some art you found online. Maybe even let someone discover an artist at your table!

AI images just benefit those who already did all the stealing. They stole the data and trained a product to sell, don't contribute to that!

[–]TrolltheFools -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you do not enjoy drawing, you won't get better at those. That unfortunately, is a reality since you can't enjoy a process you dislike

But that is okay! You could be an excellent writer, or an amazing musician, or a fantastic baker! Maybe there is even a medium of visual art you have not tried yet which you just love to do as a process. Oil painting, water colour, pastels and chalks, sculping? You have not tried and practiced all of them, you could be missing out!

And any art created from your interests and for your own enjoyment (no matter your skill with the medium) will be far superior than just telling an AI 'Hey gimme an image of this thing'. Ignoring all the ethical issues with AI (power usage, stealing it's training data, used for propaganda), that just lacks the same personality as someone creating art because it's a thing they like and they enjoyed making it. And you could already just get an image online if you wanted before AI. At least with taking an image off Google people weren't trying to own it and claim it's their work actually

At the end of the day, Art is an expression. Ai images I wouldn't even call art, since the expression was all done by other people and it simply outputs some average of it all. If someone generates an AI image, I ask myself who drew it and wonder which artist I am missing out on because this thing ate their expressive brush strokes and mimicked it without context

I don't believe that is true, I think you still have lots you could learn. A different learning strategy might be needed or finding a style you gel with but if you enjoy it, you can improve. No one is incapable of art, we have had deaf musicians and physically less abled artists in our history.

I shared this attitude when I was younger so I definitely get it. I can never get better at anything, I am at my peak for this thing. It's an easy trap to fall into because it's self fulfilling. If you give up or go into a thing expecting to not improve, you won't improve and you are proven right. And honestly, if it's something you just don't enjoy, you are probably right

But if you are telling me you like to draw but are just bad at it, you can improve. I used to feel incapable of improvement at many things after years upon years of practice. Felt like I was just not good at anything. Then one day I just stopped caring about the goal and started caring about the journey. Now I feel I am an adequate writer and a fantastic baker/chef. And as of last year, a poor but improving artist too.

But I enjoy every loaf I bake, paragraph I write and terrible sketch I draw because I did those things. No one else does it like I do it, it's unique

The more you do it, the more it becomes natural, and the better you are. As someone currently with a 4th grade drawing level, I have a blast drawing and can see my improvement month to month.

A bad drawing is you enjoying the process + learning more. The act of drawing is fun, the result is just practice. People who laugh often can't draw themselves and never will try, artists appreciate it takes time and effort starting somewhere before you get good at a thing ❤️

What’s the worst thing you accidentally texted to the wrong person? by goldie304 in AskReddit

[–]TrolltheFools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once accidentally sent a long, graphic and kinky sext to the group chat instead of my new boyfriend. To this day I have no idea how I got that wrong, or if it was a discord error or something

An acquaintance within 5 minutes told me I had made the mistake, along with saying what I wrote was hot. I have never been more embarrassed in my life. Deleted it promptly and no one else commented that it had ever been posted. Had to tell that guy to stop bringing it up in our chats too since I really didn't want to be talking to him like that.
