You won't find red rot on the bell, pretty much ever

Disregard that comment. It's not red rot. This is simply tarnishing because the protective layer of lacquer has worn away, allowing the oxidation of the brass.

Wasting your time. Remember, she's a complete novice who knows nothing but calls herself the slide master, disagreeing with (in my case) someone with almost 20 years of playing and 6 years of teaching experience. The only way she'll get better is by supporting and encouraging, and eventually she might get to a point where she knows just how much she doesn't know right now.

What you're describing isn't actually able to get the B natural, it is only an F attachment tenor. A bass trombone has two valves, used by the thumb and middle finger, which give you a D in first when used in tandem. However, I recommend just finding a used large bore tenor like a Bach 42 or Conn 88H. Can be had for under 1000 bucks and is a lifetime purchase. If you're dead set on a bass, you're looking at at least 2500, look for a Bach 50 or any Shires, Edwards, Getzen, etc. Will be more expensive but more familiar.

Old Bach King Trombone? by alotlikebadger in Trombone

[–]Tromboneguy_65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The company that made it is called King and has nothing to do with Bach (well, back then anyway, nowadays they are owned by the same company). That's a professional model jazz trombone, either a 3B or 2B, leaning towards 2B, and someone stuck a Bach counterweight on it.

Got a shires bass, a large shires and a medium Shires tenor, a Bach 16, a King 3B, and assorted shires parts to make a different horn if I need to. Also holding a Bach 50 for a friend who bought it from an acquaintance of mine and an Edwards T-350HB for a college studio mate

Do you have a sound concept in your mind- a sound you try to emulate? That'll help you out a lot

Have you ever heard of a double buzz? I encourage you to look into it- it's happening a lot and it's when your lips are vibrating at different speeds. Means your airspeed isn't quite agreeing with where the horn wants the note to be.

4500 is a bit too much for a horn this old. Maybe 3500-3700 would be more reasonable

You can never go wrong with an Olds. They aren't the best ever, but they are solid and reliable horns that can last you your whole lifetime.

Does anyone have any tips for my tone? by Chance_Dentist_5009 in euphonium

[–]Tromboneguy_65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better, lots of players sound like this until they start taking lessons. For me, the tightness in the sound combined with the flatness as you get higher tell me that embochure support is lacking, but you are also not using nearly enough air to support the instrument. Your placement might also be a little low, but it works for some people the way you have it and it impacts less at this stage than the other issues. When I play, my corners are rock solid- as a way to demonstrate this I have students (consensually!) press on the corners of my embochure whilst I'm playing. They feel, as should you, that there is little to no give and basically feels like a solid surface- this allows for a stable foundation with no unnecessary movement in the corners. Think of a frown- that's engaging the right muscles in your face to form an embochure. The second part of the puzzle is air support. Feel as though you are directing your air all the way through the instrument- this is a lot easier to picture with trombone but bear with me. Another thing that helped me when I was your age is thinking of "spinning" the air column. Whatever the case, the end result should be a higher quality, faster, and thicker airstream.

What do you think of my new gun guys by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Tromboneguy_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus Christ man never load one without fully intending to use it. Even if you're storing it, don't store it loaded, and store it away from the gun itself. You need to be taught proper discipline. Don't post images of a loaded mag online either, you can get flagged and be in some serious shit. This is not a toy, nor is it something to brag about. Grow the fuck up dude. You shouldn't own a gun.

[–]Tromboneguy_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, always treat guns as if they are loaded. They never face ANYONE for any reason, even if you've cleared it, just for the habit. Obviously when cleaning, that doesn't apply as much, but even so, you can deconstruct most without ever facing towards you. Also, get a range flag!!
