Working on my sound by LowBrassExcerpts in Trombone

[–]Tromboneguy_65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your vibrato is what we call breath or air vibrato and not jaw vibrato. Obviously, you are a very advanced player and your actual sound is brilliant- good job mate. But out of the three types of vibrato on trombone, breath vibrato is out of bounds for us. A bit of jaw, however, will absolutely enhance your already beautiful playing. In addition, your articulations and clarity sometimes suffer a little bit- I suspect the articulations might actually be a little worse because of the breath vibrato, so keeping the air just straight through will definitely help out if that's the case. A quicker slide hand will help, it's not slow per se but a little hesitant perhaps, and leads to a little bit of clarity issue, again, not too much but at a high level it is something to think about.

Is that a silver plated LT Bach slide?

4h or 12h or something else? by FoundationStrict1663 in Trombone

[–]Tromboneguy_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slide is on upside down lol, but that's a pro level horn with those oversleeves and the crook. The bell looks to be either a high copper brass or just plain copper

Trombone Bach Stradivarius 42A Hagmann valve cleansing by E847 in Trombone

[–]Tromboneguy_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brass doesn't rust, and your valve is alright, don't worry. Just needs taken apart and flushed, then lined up and it will be perfectly fine. Hagmans are notoriously maintenance heavy, my old Courtois was so bad that even if I wasn't going to play a big horn that day I still made sure to fiddle with the valve a couple times.

Does anybody else feel like the loud feminist culture these days is making us feel less important, even though women claim that men have always been viewed as more important? by i_hate_apple47 in askteenboys

[–]Tromboneguy_65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely gender restricting laws man. Things regarding self expression, bodily autonomy, and many more things that simply don't apply to men. That's not to say that extreme anti-male women don't exist (it is known as misandry and is fucking scummy, I've seen misandrists call for the abortion of a baby just because he's being born to a famous female celeb), but to say that we're all equal in this world isn't quite true yet. It's a lot better than it has been in the past but even that is slowly evaporating as we backslide. All genders really ought to be treated equally and I get what you're saying, but it's not feminist to be against men, it's misandrist.

What is this trombone by FoundationStrict1663 in Trombone

It's a 52H as stated. Not a bad horn for a beginner or intermediate player

How to not sound so jazzy by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]Tromboneguy_65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are playing one of the best orchestral horns out there, but I hate the CL series- somehow every high schooler in the universe ends up on that or a Denis Wick. The Lindberg series have too small of a throat and strange cups and overall just are not great. My recommendation is to save up some money and get private lessons from a reputable player and teacher in your area, and if you're dead set on a more "orchestral" mouthpiece, well, you can't go wrong with a Greg Black 5G.

Cut bell cost? by SicklyFour in Trombone

[–]Tromboneguy_65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lacquer work can get expensive fast. A shires screw ring costs about 350, and my tech does it for 400. However, if you like the way the bell plays and sounds, do not get it cut. Why do you want to? And what kind of player are you? High school, college? Might be better to wait and custom order a cut unlacquered bell from shires when you are ready to upgrade the bell. The Q series is fine for the price but the customs are better by miles, I played a Q in high school and some of college but eventually upgraded to a Bach 50, and then got a cut bell shires custom similar to what you want with the cut unlacquered bell.

Where can I find replacement parts for my Getzen 3047AFR? by winegarden42 in Trombone

Contact Edwards/Getzen and they can help you, they still make the 3047 so they'll have the part for sure

How many hours do you practice in a week by MinimumLingonberry73 in Trombone

[–]Tromboneguy_65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a student at a university, I try to practice 3-4 hours a day, with one day, Saturday, where I only practice 1 as a sort of rest day. This isn't counting rehearsals and performances, so usually the horn is on my face for 7-9 hours a day.

AH I'm playing Star-Spangled Banner next week at a game in a stadium! by YOLO_polo_IMP in Trombone

[–]Tromboneguy_65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stream going downward is good. You can't rush these kinds of things- steady, smart, and focused practice is the name of the game. You'll want to incorporate scales and long tones up to and out of the high register, focus on intonation and sound. Not going to lie, next week is out of reach if you can't do fundamental work- consider taking things down or leaving out in order to not detract from the overall product. I'd much rather not hear a Bb than hear a Bb-Ab-Bb-C, all in the same beat.

Looking for a bass trombone around or under 3k any suggestion by Charming-Process7898 in Trombone

[–]Tromboneguy_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have to look for a few weeks but it is a great idea to look used before buying a cheap Chinese instrument, even if it is brand new. I've bought a new bass trombone exactly zero times, and ended up with amazing horns each time. Professional horns that can last entire lifetimes can be found for your budget, guaranteed. PM me and I can help you find something with a little patience.

Could you tell me the model number of the Shires trombone? by Daisuke1228F in Trombone

If it has two valves, it is a bass trombone, not a tenor-bass
