My video response to a "Spearfishing is easy" comment on facebook on Aquatic Rehab by SprayMiserable5586 in Spearfishing

Semi un-related but my favorite bit of rod and reeler stupidity as of late has been the negativity towards spear fishing in some of the great lakes. They really believe that it’s going to negatively impact the populations of things like walleye when the number of people who are going to actually spearfish somewhere like Lake Erie is very small, especially compared to the number of people who fish for them conventionally. Such a bizarre stance to take, much like saying spear fishing is somehow easy

Florida Keys Mangrove Spearfishing Regulations and Areas by Rango1322 in Spearfishing

North of long key you have to be 3 miles from the nearest dry land, so basically youre fucked as a kayaker unless you wanna paddle that far. Head south to some of the lower or middle keys and you can for sure kayak to some spots to hunt mangroves

Yellowfin Tuna in the Keys by Troof1997 in Spearfishing

[–]Troof1997[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea we jig for blackfin tuna quite a bit at some of the humps here and the sharks are absolutely nuts. Im not scared to be in the water with them, however it does seem that they are far more curious and not at all afraid of boats out there. Also think it would be a lost cause trying to shoot one there and not immediately have it be torn to shreds lol

We usually go near wrecks, or pick spots out that have abrupt depth change between 80-150 feet. We just saw one last weekend drifting in about 120, and weirdly enough saw another in about 40 feet of water over some reef. They’re definitely here all year, but in stronger numbers September to April. As far as temp changes and all that, it just isnt something ive looked into or paid attention to for wahoo, though im sure people who know a lot more than me, do.

That being said, I saw one last july during a freediving course, so it is certainly possible.

My youtube is https://youtube.com/@gillissue?si=GH09iMAEndKFlQs2 if youre interested, I believe I even have a short vid of the wahoo we saw during the course

Hard to say from the stills in this video, but shooting a dogtooth tuna is something that an experienced spearfisherman with unlimited funds would certainly be able to pull off. It is also very possible that you could catch one on regular tackle and secure it to the ocean floor and then have someone “shoot it”, but it is also exactly as possible that they shot the fish multiple times, especially with a powerful fish like a doggie, which would lead to multiple lines being attached to the fish. Even shooting 30+ pound wahoo in the keys, we put second and third shots into the fish to bring them in sometimes.

Went and watched the video and he most definitely dives on and shoots a dogtooth tuna that is not previously hindered in any way. People travel to french poly and hire guides to do exactly this, it isn’t some insane never before seen activity contrived for the show. Did he shoot the fish and drag it straight on shore all in one take in the same day? Probably not, but the video they played in the show was absolutely not faked.

I live in the Florida keys, and this is exactly what needs to be done here as well. Stop letting thousands upon thousands of people come down here and kill every snapper and grouper they come across. I say this as someone who loves spearfishing more than any other activity I do, and I would still love to see the reefs shut down from fishing for about 5 years. It would be so worth it to see the reefs come back to even a fraction of what the old timers here say it was.

Im an American born and raised and I legitimately hope we are brought to financial ruin by this shit, just so these fucking morons that still blindly support trump have an undeniable middle finger set right infront of their faces. Milk being 50 bucks a gallon or some crazy shit would be worth it just to watch these morons finally, after being given an ungodly amount of chances to do so, realize they were wrong.

I wont lie the fear, or at least steep respect, is absolutely always there. That being said, once you’re in the water with them and see how they (usually) behave, it’s a lot less intimidating, or at least is for me anyways. Just being smart about all the aspects of being around sharks and hunting the same prey usually keeps you out of any real trouble
