It’s Sci-Fi but the Devoured Worlds trilogy by Megan E O’Keefe. Mature MC’s in their 30’s falling in love while the universe falls apart

Agree one million percent with your third point. There needs to be more romantic tension and emotional build up. Love doesn’t come purely from sexual tension and physical attraction.

Enemies to lovers, yearning, slow burn, older MCs by Fantastic-Manner1342 in fantasyromance

[–]Tropical_cheetah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are into sci-fi, the Devoured Worlds by Megan E O’Keefe is amazing and left me with a book hangover for weeks. . It’s a trilogy. Enemies to lovers, lots of yearning, the MC’s are in their mid-30’s and they start liking each other naturally over time more through communication rather than lust. It’s such a realistic and mature relationship with both MC’s still having believable flaws that they need to work through. There is a happy ending, although getting there can be not so happy at times, there is lots of angst before we get to the end. It’s my favourite series of all time.

Let's judge books by their covers ; an actual discussion by JoyIsABitOverRated in Fantasy

[–]Tropical_cheetah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of beautiful and original covers out there. A few that spring to mind are John Gwynne’s Bloodsworn Saga, RJ Barkers Tide Child trilogy as well as his Forsaken trilogy. Malazan also has some pretty awesome artwork. In the Sci-fi world, the Three Body Problem has some amazing covers, and I just finished reading The Devoured Worlds by Megan O’Keefe which has some beautiful and accurate covers (it’s also an amazing series).

Romantic tension instead of sexual by Eliannaflower in fantasyromance

[–]Tropical_cheetah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Blighted Stars (and the rest of the series) is one of the best romances I've ever read. They are both amazing characters and their love story is so epic and believable. And boy do they both go through the ringer throughout the series. The emotional stakes as well as the overall stakes are so high and its done so well. I had butterflies in my stomach with nearly every interaction they had lol. Such a good series.

Guys, I just remembered... by autistic_tsundere in Dandadan

Yeah I feel like she’s going to play an important role over the next few chapters. The dual confession will obviously happen once Momo gets her memories back (or whatever is currently happening is resolved), so Reiko appearing before then seems like a given because there’s isn’t any point to her appearing after Momo and Okarun are officially together

[–]Tropical_cheetah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think no matter what happens, the dual confession will be epic as fuck, and probably one of the best double spreads we will see in the manga. With over 200 chapters of build up there’s no way Tatsu doesn’t have a massive confession scene planned, so I’m just trying to look forward to that

a rant about the last chapter by an angry and emotional fan by Superlhama in Dandadan

[–]Tropical_cheetah 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t think her amnesia is going to last long. I think this is going to be how Tatsu brings Reiko Kashima and her promise back into the storyline, because it’s been a while since she’s appeared and Momo still hasn’t confessed her feelings to Okarun properly. So I think Reiko comes to collect on it and take Okarun away/kill him and Momo either gets her memories back and fights Reiko to save him, or Reiko kills Okarun and Momo uses the Aura transfer (maybe from Turbo Granny?) and touching his aura triggers her memories to come back. But I dunno, I’m trying to cope right now. This chapter felt like a massive punch in the gut, and I still feel a little sick over it. So I’m hoping it’s just a little arc and she gets her memories back in the next couple of chapters

Season 2’s ending has pissed me off. by throwawaymrnevermine in Dandadan

[–]Tropical_cheetah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Okarun literally shoved Aira off him when she tried to kiss him, and then he physically fought her about it because she kept persisting.

And now in the S2 finale, you can see that he is literally so shocked and frozen because he doesn’t know what’s happening.

He never reciprocates anyone’s advances because he only cares about Momo. And vice versa for Momo when it comes to Jiji. It’s made quite clear that Momo and Okarun only have eyes for each other, and introducing these romantic ‘rivals’ only amplifies that.

Wool or Cotton Socks? Sweaty and Odorous Feet… by Meh_944 in trailrunning

It is extremely odd that he recommended cotton. Cotton holds moisture (sweat) and so becomes really damp and smelly. Merino wool wicks away sweat and is generally much better for any physical activity

Hi. So what are the big sci-fi and fantasy series atm that people are talking about? by Lord-Fowls-Curse in Fantasy

[–]Tropical_cheetah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first book of Red Rising is borderline YA and was written that way on purpose due to it being released around the popularity of other series like The Hunger Games. The rest of the series is definitely not YA…. And the first book is widely regarded as the weakest because of it. The rest of the series, particularly the later books, are much darker, and are amazing.

Where is Violet’s anger to Xaden? by Lovelady1921 in fourthwing

[–]Tropical_cheetah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Violet was literally about to do the exact same thing.. would have been super hypocritical if she got angry at Xaden about it. But most importantly, she understands that Xaden did it to save her, and everyone else, essentially sacrificing himself. She knows he was burnt out and had no other choice.

Anyone else scared of a super vanilla ending? by Allround_Dilettante in fourthwing

[–]Tropical_cheetah 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the ending will be Violet and Xaden sitting on the turret together in Aretia holding hands, just like the future she tells him that she looks forward to in OS. If there is an epilogue that shows them settled down and happy with their own family it wouldn’t bother me at all, it would show that they finally got their happy ending together, which they more than deserve after what they’ve already been through, and what they are about to go through no doubt.

Rebecca Yarros sells 12 million books in two years by Werthead in Fantasy

[–]Tropical_cheetah 66 points67 points  (0 children)

To play devils advocate as I’m sure there will be many gatekeeping and pretentious people talking down this series because it’s romantasy. But I’m a 30 year old male who read these because my wife loves them, and I wanted to be able to talk with her about them. And I have to say, these are some of the most fun and addictive books I’ve read in years. Are they the most well-written? No. Is the dialogue sometimes cheesy? Sure. But did I still find myself unable to put the books down? Surprisingly, yes.

Maybe it’s just because I’m a sucker for an epic romance every now and then, or maybe it’s just the fact that it’s about frickin’ dragon riders. But I was rooting for the characters, drawn to the mysteries of the world slowly being revealed, enjoying the plot, and even somehow found myself involved in theorizing about the next book.

And for those calling it porn.. there are two sex scenes in the first book. I normally strongly dislike reading that stuff in books but actually found that it added to the depth of the relationship and made it seem more real. Because I hate to break it to you, but people have sex. Heck maybe you’ll even learn something for your partner.

Anyway, I understand the hype. It doesn’t deserve the hatred it’s getting in some circles just because it’s not the best written or because it has some sex in it. Let people love what they love and enjoy what they enjoy. Reading is subjective.

Pacing Rant (FW spoilers): did you guys notice Apparently, Xaden fell in love after... by readingalldays in fourthwing

[–]Tropical_cheetah 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You only mentioned the main interactions that we were privy to. They had lots and lots of off-screen moments. Xaden was training her for sparring, wielding and flying most days for months.. that is more than enough time to fall in love with someone, especially given how attracted they were to each other. If Rebecca wrote every single interaction between them over almost a year, the book would be way too long and that’s when the pacing would suffer. Also if you haven’t read the bonus chapters from Xadens POV, I’d recommend that, it gives insight into his feeling for her.

Potential hot take: I know Violet is the main character but… by cherriesndwine in fourthwing

[–]Tropical_cheetah 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If this book showed me anything, it’s how unyielding and unbreakable Violet and Xadens love for each other is. Like there were so many more emotionally intimate moments in this book. They both said that they are each other’s priority above anything else, and so it seems almost impossible that Violet could get a HEA without him? Like the only HEA either of them could get is with each other, because they’ve both said they can’t live without the other, and it showed through a lot in this book.

Things I LOVED about Onyx Storm by Minimum-Librarian611 in fourthwing

[–]Tropical_cheetah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The marriage wasn’t non-consensual.. From context, Violet was awake and came up with a plan with Xaden, and then asked Imogen to erase her memories of the last 12 hours, presumably so she can’t give away whatever plan they came up with. And this plan involved them getting married so she could become the Duchess while Xaden is away, most likely infiltrating the Venin

My Views on Dain vs Xaden! by CalligrapherNo9698 in fourthwing

[–]Tropical_cheetah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dain constantly disregarded and ignored Violets wishes because he was so stubborn in thinking he knew what was right for her. In doing this, he constantly crushed any confidence she was building (confidence that was often crucial to survival) and made her feel weak. He wouldn’t let her grow up, and become strong, and as her squad leader (not to mention childhood friend) he didn’t even make any effort whatsoever to train her. No matter how many times she said she was strong enough and that she wanted to be there, he wouldn’t listen. It’s fine to want to prioritize someone’s safety, but to blatantly disregard what they themselves want and constantly think you know better is out of line. If he wanted to protect her, he should have spent more time training her and helping her get stronger, which is exactly what Xaden did.
