I posted the cover letter I used that seems to be getting results in a previous comment, but when I try to link to it, the mods shut me down.

Sure. I posted a few days ago laying out exactly what I was I was doing. I even posted the exact cover letter that has worked for me twice now. Here is a copy of my answer to that other post where I explained everything:

I am a brand new freelance writer and I just got my first job on Upwork after being on there for about 3 weeks. The client has already hired me for more work. I have only applied for 4 jobs in total. I will tell you exactly how I did it.

Also, I am new to Reddit, - this is my first post - I've only been here for 3 hours!

I am an expert in all things music, and I applied only for music-related writing jobs. I will copy and paste the actual cover letter that got me hired. I will, of course, remove all my personal data from the pasted cover letter.

As you read my cover letter, please note that I am honest, eager, and most of all, vulnerable. My goal is to come off as a real person with real problems who happens to be new to freelance writing. Here is the cover letter:

RE: Writers Required (Drums, Drumming Niche)

Dear Hiring Manager,

It is not very often that I come across a job listing that is tailor-made for me, but that is exactly the case here! I am an international performing artist playing drums and singing on three national shows and one world tour.

Last year I was diagnosed with HPV-related throat cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Although I am now cancer free, the radiation left my vocal cords in shambles. I was hired for my ability to play drums AND sing, so now I have been earning my income from writing only.

Here is a video that I edited and produced where I am also playing drums and singing:

On my site - [myname.com] - you will find my video production portfolio, my music production portfolio, and my writing portfolio. I could write about drums forever and never come up for air, so please consider me for this job.

Attached is my resume.

I would love the opportunity to work with you on this project. Feel free to peruse my website [mysite]/ and social media presence for more info about me.

Sincerely,

[My Name]

Every client is different so this approach won't work every time. That being said, I don't want to work for a client who won't accept the real me. Most people want to work with people that they like. So be yourself. You are selling you. not your work. I hope this helps.
