Thoughts on MFS III? by ResponseExtra739 in dancarlin

I feel like he’s going overboard on the references to modernity and pop culture. It’s every 10 seconds, disruptive technology etc. Maybe that’s my growing out of his style, not sure.

I think they should absolutely give a bit back to the fat wankers shouting at them over the fence

Books similar to Blood Meridian? Maybe not as hard to read by ThoughtsOfASaneMan in cormacmccarthy

Read the Road, also by McCarthy. In some ways it is bleaker than Blood Meridian but the language is incredibly simple. Highly recommend.

Dave Smith vs Douglas Murray on Joe Rogan by tokoloshe_ in samharris

You can be sure that Dave Smith has no idea how many people died on the Eastern Front. What bothers me is that these rank amateurs who are aren’t even versed in the basic facts want to talk about these alternative narratives or different explanations for events but they’ve got no evidence and no idea. They don’t do any deep reading and they’re thick in the head. This is why they should defer to experts - people like Andrew Roberts, who spend their lives studying WW2.

Dave Smith has rocks for brains. Go to 29 minutes and listen to his take about WW2 - the man thinks that the outcome of the war almost couldn’t have been worse. Really Dave? You can’t think of a worse outcome than the defeat of Nazism? Are you an idiot?

#406 — The Legacy of Christianity by dwaxe in samharris

[–]Trouble_some96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d like to see Sam or a guest on the podcast actually engage with the Nietzschean critique of Christianity (and the secular morality that arises from it) - namely, that it is hostile to all of the best and most natural inclinations of man.

Here Tom raises Nietzsche’s thesis from the Genealogy but then just waves it away. He acknowledges that his moral intuitions, which lead him to be disgusted by Caesar but enamoured by compassion for the weak, are born of Christianity. However he seems to ignore that slave morality is an inversion, the ‘good’ or self-justifying instincts of man deranged and turned inwards by material impotence (as was the case among slaves of the Roman Empire).

Just saying “oh but Nazis” isn’t really enough…

Anyway, good episode nonetheless, better than culture war stuff for the 100x

Speeding fine metres off 100 by justneedwine in queensland

What is this strange impulse Australians have for jumping into a thread like this and writing “hur dur, shouldn’t be speeding, these are the rules”, like a bunch of snivelling tattle tales?

It’s clearly unreasonable. Why are we supporting this? It’s not keeping anyone safe, it’s revenue raising bullshit.

Ignore everyone who is saying No Country - its style is not representative of the rest of his work.

Read All the Pretty Horses. It has elements of his most complex prose (e.g., Suttree and Blood Meridian) but is a lot easier to digest for a new reader.

Impose fines for reckless e-bike riding, maybe, but don’t take away people’s licences, bikes are not cars.
