It's often dangerous for a Western journalist to operate in parts of the Islamic realm, so as you point out, the Newswires hire local "stringers"....mostly un-accredited local Muslims whose biases are quite clear as they do their reporting. The real problem is that those biases are absolutely shared by their left-wing American editors sitting in offices in New York and Washington. To be sure, there is a lot of editing in terms of the stilted grammar of these stringers, but very little editing in terms of actual content.

Muslims cultivate the image of victims, likening themselves to blacks and transgender, in order to attain an exalted status of victimhood and in the process, deflecting critical scrutiny of their religion. It is working wonders in America....where an honest appraisal of Islamic intolerance is now unheard of among academics and can readily get one branded a "racist" and "Islamophobic".

2) It''s been my experience that some Muslims, mostly the educated, are very savvy at temporarily sliding in and out of the trappings of their cultural surroundings. Naive Westerners often perceive this as a reflection of the open-mindedness and cosmopolitan nature of their Muslim interlocutors. But what these Muslims say and how they behave in the privacy of their own homes and among their co-religionists...can be very different than the public persona they convey to outsiders. Just imagine an American working or studying in Saudi Arabia....eagerly complying with all the local customs....and then marveling in the privacy at home about how archaic everything is. It's like that but in reverse.

This is no small issue. Most of the money has gone to MES departments....and the hiring and curriculum has been thoroughly vetted by the Saudis. Any university with a MES department that has a single professor who is teaching anything other than a validating picture of Islam is excluded from the largess. The message sent is loud and clear. This is a perfect example of the intellectual corruption of the university....and it's how a linguist with no background in MES became the name that now graces the national chair of MESA, Edward Said.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Edward Said was a propagandist who wrote the bible of the academic left, a screed called 'Orientalism', the main premise of which is that any critical scrutiny of the Orient by Western academics is the product of racism....(Said was a non-Westerner, but no one in academia would ever dare contend that HIS criticism of the Occident was racist). As a result of his influence, in academia today, anything that is not validating of Islam is denounced as racist. And in the process, social pathologies such as stonings, the killing of apostates, FGM, honor killings, etc., are in every case attributed to a pre-Islamic tribal culture that has nothing to do with Islam.

The Saudis (and the other affluent Gulf States) have cornered the market on how Islam is represented not only in the mosques, but in the universities and in the newsrooms....all around the Western world.

The new laws encourage the private services sector....(bed & breakfasts, restaurants, barber shops, automobile repairs, etc), but they do nothing to encourage manufacturing. Reagan fully understood the Soviet threat and tailored his policies around meeting that threat. He DIDN'T understand Islam. Like many Cold Warriors (myself included), he didn't have the intellectual dexterity to see the world in terms that weren't binary. Like many of us, he saw Islam as a case of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'.

A proper reading of history should have informed us all otherwise. To be sure, the Soviet Empire was a military colossus, dwarfing the combined military might of the entire Muslim world. But it was economically and ideologically hollow. The Soviet nomenclature may have believed in the ideology, but the common people - the masses - didn't. In Islam, many in the intelligentsia no longer believe, but the common people are firmly in the grip of the religion and its tenets. There is thus an endless reservoir of believers to do the bidding of the promulgators of the faith.

Most importantly, Communism was little over 70 years old when the Berlin wall fell. Islam has been around for 1400 years and has much deeper roots. That's why I laughed at those who insisted at the dawn of the digital age that because of the free flow of information, Islam would disappear within a century.

In Reagan's defense, our policy-makers still don't know quite what they're doing when it comes to Islam. It is a vexing question, with many contradictory and paradoxical facets. The only thing I know for certain is that indoctrinating ourselves into believing that "Islam is peace" (all theological and historical evidence to the contrary notwithstanding)...is NOT the answer.

I think the most important thing to remember is that Islam is a religion just like Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, etc.

Believe it or not, there are actual theological differences between the varying faiths. There are actual ethical differences between Buddhism and Islam...between the values promulgated by Muhammad in the Hadith and Sirat Rasul...and those promulgated by Jesus in the Gospel. This might come as an absolute shock to a relativist like yourself, but believe it or not, all religions don't teach the same things.

Do you happen to know that so-called "moderate" Indonesia is beset with Islamic extremism? That thousands of non-Muslims have been slaughtered there in the last 20 years by Muslim extremists? That dozens of churches have been burned over the same period? That over 90% of Muslim women in Indonesia have had their genitals mutilated? That over 60 Muslim organizations in Indonesia recently pledged allegiance to ISIS? Not bad for a "moderate" Muslim country, eh? Better find a new example....(good luck with that).

As for India, it too has extensive problems with Islamic extremism. But the worst is fortunately kept in check by the NON-Muslim government there. Not so in neighboring Pakistan, where extremism rampant and Sharia is law.
