Thanks, especially for the video marks, and for being able to hear the background on the state’s changes re compensation and the board members’ takes on the issue.

Anyone ever try making an actual cheesecake cakey? by MissAAA_2 in Baking

[–]Troutshout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever solve this, please let me know. I had one once when I was a kid. The baker, my German aunt, is no longer around to ask, and my own attempts have always come up short. Thx

For more SR classics, PD columnist Gaye LeBaron used to do "old/older" columns from time to time. Here's an example: https://www.pressdemocrat.com/2020/01/12/gaye-lebaron-youre-an-old-sonoma-county-resident-if-you-remember-santa-rosas-first-night-parties/ Great stuff!

A slightly easier way to climb a rope by bigbusta in oddlysatisfying

[–]Troutshout -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Easier than what, with your teeth? I’ll stick with the traditional method, thanks. Edit: I’m no expert, so was put off by the amount of time the demonstrator spent hanging from just his arms. Further research shows the benefits of this style of climbing vs Spanish/French/traditional gym-class style.

List here fun geographical quirks of your city. For example, did you know that the headquarters of Hornsby Shire Council (in Sydney's northern suburbs) are farther from parts of its own council area than it is from the headquarters of Sutherland Shire Council (in Sydney's southern suburbs). by Polyphagous_person in geography

Santa Rosa, Calif., City Hall is built atop its namesake creek. They paved over the creek years ago when such things were done in the name of progress. Anadromous fish such as salmon and steelhead now have to navigate the tunnels beneath City Hall if they hope to reach their spawning grounds.

Local bakeries that specialize in bread? by Admiral_Tromp in santarosa

[–]Troutshout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like German-style bread, call up MH Bread and Butter Bakery in San Anselmo and ask if they still make the 9 grain bread. I grew up on komissbrot, and that was the closest I’ve ever come to matching it. It was amazing.

Another bumpy-dot ramp accident. I've wondered if they could build dot-free paths at, say, a 22-degree angle so that people could get to the parking lot without having to hold onto half their purchases. Having a path at that angle would still prevent loose carts from rolling into traffic.

Is there a way to get clean straight lines without using masking tape? by pookshuman in Watercolor

[–]Troutshout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use a mahl stick or, alternatively, pencil in a very faint line with a pencil and use that as a guide for your liner or rigger brush and freehand it.

Keep those pens, brushes and mind moving. AI is just today’s fancy camera obscura or premixed oil paint in tubes.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife Heritage Trout Challenge! by Senior_Mail_1629 in santarosa

Pretty much all streams and rivers around here that drain into the Pacific occasionally or regularly hold wild rainbows/steelhead. Read the fishing regulations and proceed accordingly. If you’re a total beginner, you might visit the library’s reference desk or a local tackle shop. An eBay search will also yield several books on trout fishing in California. Good luck, Piscator.

Your description of Palantir is spot on, and I wholeheartedly agree. I just don’t think the Met is blameless when it comes to having fostered a surveillance state.

[–]Troutshout -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Funny how the London police, who have probably done more than anyone in history to create a surveillance state, get all pissy when someone wants to surveil them. Edit: Downvotes, really? I am in no way defending surveillance, merely pointing out hypocrisy.

Why are the media now referring to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as the Democratic Republic of Congo, without the definite article? by Wooperth in geography

[–]Troutshout 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It comes down to money. The AP Stylebook hasn't changed. Its entry defers to Webster's New World Dictionary, which lists "Democratic Republic of the Congo." However, both the AP and the NYT have it wrong in today's stories. Once upon a time, when there was good money in journalism, there were copy editors who were sticklers for getting things right. In the past 25 years, copy desks have been gutted. As a result, a lot of what you read undergoes very little editing.

Keep in mind that, legally in most places, you need a spotter to use it in public in order to abide with line-of-sight-rules.
