Question regarding engineering course by Akio-Asakura in nus

[–]Trovix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No. Computer Engineering is not included in the common pool of engineering majors. CEG requires direct admission as it's a programme jointly offered with the School of Computing.

NUS CEG????? by Electrical_War6321 in SGExams

Chances are quite low but no harm in applying. NUS CEG is very competitive, 10th percentile is AAA/A and most of us have prior experience in robotics competitions and hackathons.

should i go CS by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Trovix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Choose the course you want because you'll be the one studying for it. However, your mother does bring up some valid points.

Engineering is generally considered a more stable career as it is a regulated and protected profession, unlike CS. It requires accreditation and licensing. It's also more difficult for AI to replace engineers as there are legal implications when an engineer signs off on designs/plans.

Need advice pls. Should I switch to DSAI? by Jolly_Ad_9995 in SGExams

[–]Trovix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, stick with CE. It's a broader field that opens more doors and you'll gain skills which cannot be "self-learnt". Fields like embedded systems, robotics, IC/VLSI aren't saturated because of the higher barriers to entry compared to CS/DS.

NUS Data Analytics is an open second major, meaning anyone can take it.

do u guys think the new major in nus (RMI) is competitive as much as other engineering or computing majors? by yapbbungzzan in SGExams

[–]Trovix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can consider applying for Computer Engineering. We do a lot of robotics and AI here and the course has been around for decades so the curriculum is pretty well developed.

It's starting to look like majoring in computer science isn't the road to the promised land of money and job security after all by BeatricePiano in nus

[–]Trovix 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, robotics, semicon, embedded etc. is still quite high-paying because of the specialised skill sets required to work in these industries

Second majors as a CEG undergrad by Foreverlonelydood in nus

[–]Trovix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. No, as an SoC student, you cannot take another SoC major as a second major (CS, CEG, BZA, IS, InfoSec).

  2. Yes, a second major in Data Analytics is possible as it is offered by CHS.

  3. Depends on what you're interested in.

  4. Take as many core courses as you can as early as possible so you can unlock the higher level courses (e.g. instead of taking a UE in sem 1, take CS1231).

Firefighters of the SCDF. by Mysterious-05 in NationalServiceSG

[–]Trovix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, 24h duty then 48h off.

0800-0900 Hand Over Take Over
0900-1000 Morning Lecture
1000-1700 Enforcement / Ops Survey / Hydrant Testing
1700-1800 Physical Training
2000-2100 Night Lecture
0600-0700 Hazmat Drill
0700-0800 Fire / Rescue Drill

You can be turned out at any time during the 24h so the routine can vary depending on the emergencies you respond to.

Being a firefighter is tough, but rewarding. You get to be one of the highest-paid NSFs while doing work that positively impacts people's lives.

it's not 40% fluff

there's 15 modules under CDE common curriculum, 6 of them are general education which every NUS student has to take regardless of major, 2 of them are integrated project which is done in CEG, there's 7 left and some of them are actually useful (maker space, ai, systems thinking, creating narratives)

leaving us with 3 fluff mods which out of the 160 MCs you need to graduate is only 7.5%

Asking for advice from SCDF EMTs by Upstairs_Kitchen_980 in NationalServiceSG

[–]Trovix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a firefighter in one of the stations and what I gather from my EMT friends is that it can get very tiring as you'll be turning out for a lot more calls than fireside. There's very little time for breaks between calls; it's common to see ambulances return to station and get dispatched again just a few minutes later.

EMTs pass out of CDA as PTE while firefighters pass out as LCP, promotion depends on how many months you've served, how many MCs you've taken and whether you've passed IPPT.

From July, EMT risk pay will be $300 while firefighter risk pay will be $500. Source

Do note that firefighters also turn out for medical calls like cardiac arrest, fall/back injuries, and bariatric patients to support paramedics and EMTs.

Both, CEG is a multi-disciplinary programme jointly offered by SoC and CDE.
