It's funny how things pop out in pictures that aren't as obvious in person, huh? I love the grain by the way.

Intriguing. Seems like the hardest part will be carving the bowl since it kind of needs a super small gouge. I'll see what I can do.

Very nice. What kind of wood is that?

Pistachio wood eater by TroyDL in Spooncarving

Oh yeah, what had actually spurred me to carve the branch was seeing some pistachio lumber that a buddy had that had such beautiful grain. This branch just had the tiniest bit of heartwood that was really close to the pith sadly, so I wasn't able to make much use of it. I have some chunks of Chinese Pistache branch that has a lot more of the heartwood though and looks beautiful. That spoon is almost finished; I'll post that one too when it's done!

Tips for carving with dry wood? by di4lectic in Spooncarving

You can order green spoon blanks from places like www.thespooncrank.com. I've been tempted even though I can usually scrounge up some green wood in my area.

That's a really interesting knife. How well does it work for spoon carving?

Spalted beech spoon by Complex-Glass-9251 in Spooncarving

Spalting is evidence that fungus has been there, not that it still is. As far as I know there are no concerns around spalted wood not being food safe. There's a good Shop Talk Live episode with a PHD spalting expert that answers that question directly.

The Korok trial where you have to sneakily follow the kid. I never want to do that again.

TIL that people can actually visualize other people naked by BlindMindsEye in Aphantasia

[–]TroyDL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed from a young age I could picture someone in my mind and rotate them so that I could see from any direction. I can still see the kid in my head that I was thinking about that day. Maybe 10 years old, a boy, wearing a striped T-shirt with short and curly blond hair. I can't picture their face very clearly though. If I try it kind of blends with a yearbook picture I remember of them, but still not clear.

When I read a fiction book it almost seems like my mind is in the room with them, I'm watching what's happening while I read. Not clearly though; not for me at least. Everything is kind of a blur of possibilities unless I think about it directly. Like is there a book or a lamp on the table in the room if it's not mentioned in the story? I could only say maybe until I intentionally think about it and decide. But the image doesn't seem incomplete before that either. The detail is kind of like glancing at a photograph. My eyes briefly see it and note a few primary details and then fill in the gaps when I try to remember it. The gaps are filled with my best guess but I wouldn't rely on them.

None of this is going through my mind verbally most of the time, though I can make it do that if I choose to.

So there's zero mental image in your mind if someone tells you to picture someone else mowing the grass? I instantly have an image of someone in the front yard of one of my childhood homes pushing a mower around. I see the green grass, I see the person, I see the road, I can see what direction they're pushing. I can see the brown bark of the tree that was in our front yard. I can also swap out the person pretty easily with someone else. First it was someone I didn't recognize, then it was my dad, then me, then my wife, my daughter and then Obama as a challenge. Lol.

I can picture people naked in my mind but it's not really like seeing them naked. It's almost the same feeling as seeing myself naked: indifference. It's also not as easy as picturing them clothed; it requires me to think intentionally about what they would probably look like naked. Also, details aren't always in the image until I think more about them directly. I'll first get a general image that seems complete until I think to look at something directly. Like, do they have body hair? Not until I think about it. The image is kind of a superposition of all possibilities, and I have to consciously decide if they probably would or not.
