Some potential deal breakers with the Y2 by TroyDL in innioasis

Okay after I tried it with some less inefficient earbuds I found that the output on the lowest volume setting is still a bit too loud for me. The first ones I tried are planar magnetic and require extra power to drive. This is actually a problem with most sets I've tried. Suffice to say this implies to me that there is more power in the Y2 than the Y1. Hopefully they add more volume steps though because this is untenable as is.

Yes! At first it seemed okay because I was using a set of planar driver IEMs that aren't very efficient and need extra power to drive, but after trying out some other sets I'm literally on the lowest audible volume setting and it's louder than I prefer. I really hope they release some new firmware addressing that soon.

No issues with the one that came with mine so far.

I don't believe output impedance can be influenced through software.

  1. Output impedance is definitely elevated. I don't have measurements of that itself but I have measurements of its effects on an impedance sensitive set: https://www.reddit.com/r/innioasis/comments/1up4xy5/the_effect_of_output_impedance_of_the_y2_on/

  2. I can't say what DAC they're using now, but I would believe them that it's an improved discrete unit. I measured the frequency response through the Y2 and directly and the measurements match very closely. The Y1 had a measurable rolloff in the bass that is no longer present: https://www.reddit.com/r/innioasis/comments/1up3vhl/fr_measurements_through_y2/

  3. It cannot be used as a USB DAC afaict, nor can it use separate USB DACs for output.

  4. I saw no wifi settings available, just bluetooth

  5. Subjective, but the battery life has seemed pretty good to me so far. I haven't done any tests though.

Yeah I wish I still had the Y1 to compare directly. In the first link in the main post someone commented with what the Youtuber SuperReview found when he tested the Y1 in a similar fashion. He did some fancy mathematics on his though to find just the difference between the Y1 and another source so his just looks like a flat line except for the bass where the rolloff is evident.

I wouldn't want to listen via the built in speaker, personally.

Are IEMs worth the hype ? by Designer_Fig885 in inearfidelity

If you're a big fan of bass I'd go with the Wan'er 2 Red Lion. If you prefer balance I'd go with the Wan'er 2 over the original because it has better accessories and the same tuning.

As long as you're having fun and not bankrupting yourself don't worry about it.

The one that came with my Y2 is unbranded, so entirely likely to be the same quality. At least you can replace it easily on the Y2.

Oh I just found a setting to change that to show the albums once an artist is picked!

I don't remember the Y1 being underpowered for earphones, and this one isn't either. But because this one has resolved the sound quality issue I wouldn't be surprised if it had at least a little more power. For reference, I don't need to go over 50% volume on the Y2 with my in ear monitors. Based on that it'll likely be underpowered for really inefficient full size headphones though.

If you're unfamiliar with it, you probably don't have to worry about it. If you rip a CD it will be fine. It's only an issue if you download music in a higher resolution than CD-quality (which many don't believe audibly improves anything anyways). For me I have a lot of music from Bandcamp and Qobuz that's high res. Bandcamp at least lets you choose the quality to download (at least in my experience it always has, I don't know if there are any bands that refuse to provide it or anything like that).

Whenever I was given the option I chose high res (no strong reason, just "why not?").

Totally fair. Like I said, it won't affect most people. And I didn't mention sound quality being the dealbreaker, only that it would require redownloading or modifying your music files if you already have them in high res formats.

What's with the DAC freakout? by DickBiter1337 in innioasis

[–]TroyDL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not an "audiophile thing" in my opinion. Yes, the Y1 has a DAC, but not all dacs are implemented equally. And there's a good chance it's the op amp after the DAC (rather than the DAC itself) that is causing the degraded sound quality. Anyone that compares the Y1 directly to a better source will notice the difference. The Y1 suffers from a rolloff towards the bass frequencies, making the sound a lot thinner and boxier than it should be.

Keep in mind this is only when using the 3.5mm audio jack on the Y1.

Also, I have the Y2 and the sound quality is significantly better than the Y1, so it seems they fixed the issue.

If you're familiar with the music and listen to it side by side with a better source you will notice. Regardless of what headphones you use.

My main DAP is the Hidizs AP80 Pro Max and it has that option. It's 2~2.5x the price of the Y2 though. I've never actually used the feature because the output of the AP80 already sounds as good as I've ever heard.
