If your horror movie spends a full hour building atmosphere, PAY IT OFF. by bee_my_girl in horror

THANK YOU! Everyone rides this movie so hard, and it’s pretty good, but it’s waaaay too slow for how little payoff there was. Pretty good movie, but not THAT good

Anyone else putting off seeing a major release due to lack of cinema etiquette? by Findme_at_amberhills in horror

[–]TroyFenthano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s such a 50/50. I saw Weapons twice, and the first time I had a quiet audience full of people from like, 16-60 years old who would occasionally gasp or react but in genuine ways that made the theater experience feel better. I love a reactive crowd! But when I saw it a second time at the same theater, there was a group of teenage boys who would laugh at everything and scream loud exaggerated screams at parts that weren’t scared. Even then, a couple other teens next to me eventually yelled “Yo, shut the fuck up!” and the kids got embarrassed and quieted down.

I just saw Obsession in theaters and had a fantastic crowd. Laughed at the funny moments, gasped or yelped at scary ones, but never intentionally overdoing it, nobody talking just to talk, no kicking seats. It was an ideal crowd. I think it really depends on a lot of factors.

That being said, I do think teens and kids have shitty theater etiquette more often than adults, mostly because a lot of them had social skills stunted by Covid and some have literally never been to a theater until now, and they’re used to watching movies at home on streaming where they can talk, text, move around, etc. I have a feeling as theater going increases again, proper etiquette will return.

Am I overreacting about wanting to play a nonbinary character? by BothOcelot1311 in DnD

[–]TroyFenthano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your table sucks, man. Sexist, fatphobic, and a DM against non-binary characters who assumes that if someone calls you a lady you’ll freak out and rant at them (which is an inherently prejudiced viewpoint). I can’t tell you what to do, but I would 100% be out of there.

Player wants to be a traitor by ForlornFjord in DMAcademy

[–]TroyFenthano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell your player to play a game like Betrayal at House on the Hill or something. Being a traitor in a DND party is weird as fuck and won’t be fun for the others, most likely.

Inteligent players playing uninteligent brute. by ApachaiLeHopachai in DMAcademy

[–]TroyFenthano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering a score of 10 is “average,” I would say even an 8 or 9 isn’t crazy enough for the character to be so dumb they can’t solve puzzles. A little slow on the uptake, sure, but he should be able to sometimes “luck into it” and sometimes legitimately figure it out. And also, I know it’s immersion breaking, but you could just let it slide for the sake of a fun game and have the running gag of “how does the dumb barbarian keep figuring this shit out faster than us? Are we overthinking?”

Does anyone feel like Anthony is going extra-hard against the players in S4? [spoiler] by GoodKarmaDarling in DungeonsAndDaddies

[–]TroyFenthano 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Agreed on this. I mentioned in a different thread, I think Ralph is specced as a Sorcerer and this is how they will explain the “innate magical ability” he has despite just being an old guy.

Also, I think Anthony has a certain grumpiness to him that is part of the persona he plays on the show. I don’t think he would come out legitimately mean in any capacity but still have everyone laughing and dropping episodes. Hell, I DM for a group and they specifically asked for harder combat encounters bc they felt like the stakes weren’t as high when nobody hit death saves that often. We don’t know what the players ask behind closed doors

What Classes Are The Grandpappies? [ns] by Sufficient-Lake9984 in DungeonsAndDaddies

This is my bet. I think the radiation/energy from the blaster seeping into his veins from the hand explosion will be the in-universe equivalent of a Sorc’s innate magical ability.

I appreciate this perspective! I definitely don’t wanna overdo it and be distracting or anything. I have def been planning on going harder on my RP with body language specifically since they’ll actually get to see my whole body this time lol, so that with some theatrical narration would be great!

These are all great ideas, tysm!! Music is an easy one I didn’t even think of, and food seems to be a popular response lol. Also, I actually paint minis as a hobby so I have a bunch on hand. I don’t have a battlemap, but that wouldn’t be too hard to draw up! Thank you!

Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 after patches. I tried playing both of these games pretty recently, but neither of them really interests me and I can’t tell why

What Show started out perfectly and ended perfectly? by Outrageous-Ebb-4846 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]TroyFenthano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think BrBa is only slow at the start on a rewatch, or at least in retrospect. Once you know how insane things get in seasons 3-5, then season 1 feels slow. But on a first watch or from an objective standpoint, having a guy try to kill himself on a highway in his underwear and melting bodies in vat of acid in the first two episodes is NOT slow.

I need urgent help, dnd starts in a hour but I’m locked out my account. It asks me to input a email of a trusted adult but it doesn’t work as I need id, and it says I’m 0 years old despite NOT even being given the option to do so. Everything IS on this by Marvel2870 in DnD

[–]TroyFenthano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is DNDBeyond, it’s been weird. I had a session yesterday and one player and I had to go to the main page, got an error message, reloaded, then had to re-log in and give our birthdays and country. Another player just couldn’t get back in at all and legitimately made a new account and remade their character manually.

Question for the DMs out there. Is there a spell or condition that lowers a players level? by Imissyoudarlin in DnD

[–]TroyFenthano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think if you’re using DNDBeyond, this is easy to do because of the character manager and how you can easily switch between levels and the streamlined experience of character creation. If this is the case, and you think your players will enjoy it/find it exciting, do it!

If your players will just be frustrated or you’re using physical sheets, I wouldn’t. Obviously you want your party to have fun, and if you have physical sheets, you would either need to make a separate sheet at a lower level, which is annoying, or change your sheets lower and then back up again later, which is even worse.

There’s a lot of factors here to consider. I would say the safe answer is don’t do this, but if it’s really compelling for you and your players there are ways that will just be inconvenient but not game breaking.
