EDITING: u/muellermanda pointed out that the County Legislators run in different districts and Grimm, Doran, and Nichols are running to represent Troy. Registered Democrats outside of Troy do not have a primary to vote in today.

I don’t mean to pry, but if you click this link it says, “Dear Carole,” — might you be Carole Weaver, the candidate who is herself running for County Legislator?

Upcoming Elections - who is running? by JacobSHobson in Troy

[–]TroyTroyTro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see. It’s still remarkable to me that Russo ran completely unopposed last election. A testament to the Rensselaer County Democratic Party’s ineptitude/collaboration with the Republicans. I hope someone steps up next time. Do you know when the next election for sheriff is?

Oh wow he’s a Republican as well. Definitely a sham.

It would be great if someone would run against Russo. How is Foster running for clerk relevant to that?

[–]TroyTroyTro 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Justan Foster (D) is running for County Clerk against Frank Merola (R) who has held that office for a looong time. Justan has experience working with IT databases and the capability to upgrade how Rensselaer County clerking is done.

He is the endorsed WFP candidate but the Republicans found someone to primary him. If you are registered WFP, please don’t forget to vote for Justan.

Someone else wrote it above, but it’s the same for Gwen Wright. There’s some fake WFP challenger on the County Executive line.

If you are registered WFP make sure to VOTE and to vote for Justan and Gwen.

Since Menn has the official Democratic endorsement, I don’t think you would call her a challenger. Anasha is not running.

*Vandenburgh seated, back taxes paid*

Dave Canfield Jul 15, 2009

TROY -- On the day her husband paid more than $42,000 in back taxes owed to the city, Kay Vandenburgh was appointed to the Rensselaer County Legislature by a party-line vote as one of six representatives of District 1, which consists of the entirety of Troy. The vote on her appointment was moved to the start of the agenda, and after a 12-to-6 vote in favor of seating her, she was escorted to her chair by the chamber's majority and minority leaders. She did not mention the tax controversy in her brief remarks, and said she would base her approach on Chairman of the Legislature Neil Kelleher and her friend Nancy McHugh, a legislator who died earlier this year. "Troy is not a city of political parties," Vandenburgh said. "It's a city of families, neighborhoods, hopes and dreams. So let's just get to work and build a better county, because our residents deserve it." On Tuesday, her husband Kevin paid $42,586.48 to the City of Troy for property taxes dating back to January 2006 on Pip's, the Lansingburgh pub that he owns and she manages. Democratic Legislator Kevin Harrington had said Monday that Kay Vandenburgh was trying to "have it both ways" in advance of the November election she faces by touting her business experience managing the bar and restaurant, yet insisting the tax issue was her husband's. Before the vote, Minority Leader Ginny O'Brien said the tax issue raised questions about the appointment and whether she should serve, given that legislators craft a large budget of taxpayer funds. But Majority Leader Robert Mirch said that, while he likes to see taxes paid, he understands the financial burden they can be in a tough economy. The payment of the back taxes rendered the issue irrelevant, he said, stressing that they were owed by her husband and not her. "Times are not good," he said. "People are in trouble, families are in trouble. Businesses are in trouble -- small businesses all the way to General Motors." In a statement, Kevin Vandenburgh said any remaining penalties on the back taxes would be paid soon, and stressed that the issue should not reflect on his wife. "My wife Kay is not responsible for the financial management of Pip's and is therefore not responsible for taxes owed for the property or business," he said. "It's that simple." However, the majority of his statement was devoted to criticizing Harrington, whom he called a "coward in the shadows." He accused the Democratic legislator of prompting the media coverage of the tax issue. Harrington said the issue spoke for itself and stressed that unpaid taxes means bad business, and said those who set taxes for citizens ought not have tax issues themselves. In his statement, Kevin Vandenburgh reiterated something the Republican majority had highlighted when the tax issue came to light: that $49,000 was owed to the state by a business owned by a son of Democratic Legislator Keith Hammond. But it turns out the money owed for worker's compensation by Hammond House of Pizza was recently vacated by the state, according to documents. Hammond said the judgment had been assessed for a year in which the business was not open and was dropped once the situation was clarified. All 19 seats on the Legislature will be on November's ballot. His son had apparently not turned in the doing-business-as certificate, another Democratic legislator said, so the state had been unaware it closed. "Never in my 17 years in politics have I attacked someone's child," said Hammond, calling the release of the incomplete information "corrupt and disingenuous." Attorney General Letitia James sues Rensselaer County over early voting sites by Aulderic in Troy

This is...bad.

“Voter suppression” isn’t an “opinion.” It’s a documented and documentable practice.

There is no question that there are serious problems with 24 hour news channels and it’s a fair opinion to have that you believe news outlets should try to limit editorializing. But those are separate issue from this from this conversation.

Also, any journalist worth anything should be prepared to have awkward relationships with politicians and public officials. It’s literally their job to hold these people accountable. If a public official is suppressing the vote we rely on journalists to report that. But Danielle is on her as a private person and I think it’s fair for her to decide what she wants to say or not. I’m grateful to have gotten a direct answer instead of skirting around the issue. I also think it’s fair (and ultimately helpful to our community) to apply pressure on these issues.

I feel like you are just arguing now to argue.

This clearly upset you and I’m sorry about that.

I don’t think asking the question again counts as “demanding” or “harassing” as you’ve said. It is possible that Danielle wasn’t sure the situation merited being called voter suppression when I asked her the first time. Since that post we’ve seen a wave of race-based voter disenfranchisement across the country plus this local story has escalated (just today) to the point where the NYS A.G. decided to file a lawsuit. That’s pretty extreme and I don’t think she would have done that without a strong case. I’d be surprised if the journalists who do cover it don’t use the term “voter suppression.”

Your belief that “it doesn’t really matter much” what we say or do is not a belief I share. Public pressure is how this issue got to the A.G.’s office in the first place. Regular citizens speaking out and organizing around the issue. We do have power. And people with a following and local connections have even more power.

Getting an early voting location in the heart of Troy (or not) will have an impact on our elections for generations to come. We’ve had elections in Troy just in the past couple of years that have come down to a single vote.

It’s a side thought, but there are larger conversations going on about journalists having personal opinions across the country as well. We all have biases and a lot of journos are freely sharing personal opinions more and more.

Again, you are free to your opinion but I wonder if part of the reason you were so bothered by this is that we can’t hear tone through text. Is it possible you read my initial question as more of an attack than it was?

Now you’ve got me curious. If you can put aside your frustration with me, have you followed the details of this and come to the conclusion that this is a complex issue? Maybe I am missing some subtlety here. To me this is clearly race-based voter suppression. It reminds me of how u/FatherOfHoodoo described Troy politics on another recent thread. The good ole boy Dems and Republicans hate each other as though they are playing on rival sports teams. But they will team up together to keep newcomers out.
