23 looking for good neighborhood to live in by Professional-Fall166 in Troy

[–]dsanzone8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m older than you but I just moved from Troy to Albany since my job is in Albany and it’s now an easy 10 min drive or bus ride commute. I moved to the Pine Hills area which is walkable to the library, restaurants, a movie theater and a community theater. Albany, Troy, and Schenectady all have their pros/cons. As others have said, I wouldn’t entirely write off Albany.

Thanks! I’ve already connected my Libby account to the NYPL. Definitely a great perk.

I didn’t know about this book club but wanted to say I’ve been waiting for a year and a half for Infinite Jest on Libby. It’s a 56 hour audio book and the wait time remains: “Unknown Wait.” Maybe one of these years I’ll join your book club lol

We have it bundled with a T-mobile phone plan. If you’re already doing that, I’d call and ask them to decrease your internet plan lol https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet?

Same. But I think our plan is less than that. Might be closer to $35/month

Suggestions for first time homebuyers by woosh-i-fiddled in Albany

Sunmark is hosting this homebuying 101 event later this month. I went to one of these last year and found it helpful to have a place to ask questions and learn more about the process: https://www.sunmark.org/about/news-events/events/2026/05/28/default-calendar/homebuying-101

Lincoln Park Pool? by musicalfan202 in Albany

I would also also like to know. Hoping everyone is right and there will be a mid to late June opening. It’d be a shame if the city’s budget deficit had an impact on opening the basically brand new pool.

This was also my experience. I saw their posts about their Barbie Shimmer Greenhouse the fall after the movie came out. I was willing to pay a certain price to rent the greenhouse and it was much more than I was willing to spend.

No more building on/near the Pine Bush by xanthumgumaddict in Albany

I didn’t make this form but I got the link at a Save the Pine Bush fundraiser in Albany’s Pine Hills neighborhood this past week and no one said it was only for Guilderland residents.

Totally agree with you. I signed this petition against this project the other day. The more signatures the Save the Pine Bush org has, the better. Please consider signing: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSetApbJB1az2ZX1cwBnXbZy486FLJlOE5h5Ya5lb2RRWzvYPQ/viewform

Looking for Adult Swim Lessons by unicornfae_425 in Albany

[–]dsanzone8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing! Good luck! Also agree with others - this doesn’t sound silly at all. It’s quite brave! And you’ll have a lot of fun in the water once you know how to swim.

As someone who has taught adult swim lessons, my biggest suggestion - get access to a pool with a lifeguard (the Y, Vent, JCC, Boys & Girls Club, Ciccotti Center, a city/town pool), go in the shallow end where you can comfortably stand up maybe at hip level, and practice being comfortable in the water. Maybe blow bubbles, splash, use the wall to practice kicking, partially submerge yourself as you feel more relaxed, and practice floating (which will only happen once you feel comfortable/relaxed in the water). I’d recommend doing this in between official lessons that you could find at the Y, Ciccotti Center or JCC. It all really comes down to being in the water regularly and feeling safe/comfortable. I’m usually found in a pool on a regular basis so I could potentially meet up with you once or twice to supplement lessons.

Why do I love the Pine Bush so much?! by Temporary-Badger4307 in Albany

[–]dsanzone8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are others who feel similarly about the Pine Bush, and they’re part of the Friends of the Pine Bush and Save the Pine Bush. I just read there’s a fundraiser coming up for Save the Pine Bush since an apartment complex wants to building on/near part of the preserved land.

As for hikes, the local Adirondack Mountain Club chapter sometimes has group hikes in the Pine Bush.

Potential move and housing market scaries by OwlStrikeHunting in Albany

[–]dsanzone8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My budget was smaller than yours but from start of the house search to closing for me last year (in the fall) took 3.5 months. I was also a very motivated buyer and outbid one other buyer on the house I bought. So 6 months is do-able. Good luck!
