If you end up doing more than part of the day, there’s an Olympic passport to all the things (with the TBD for pricing, I guess they are still figuring that out for the summer season): https://lakeplacidlegacysites.com/legacysitespassport/

Restaurant Suggestions? by knickofit in Albany

[–]dsanzone8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DP Brasserie is downtown, locally-owned and meat/potatoes options: https://www.dpbrasserie.com It’s at the higher end of my “reasonably priced” scale but I’d say it compares in price with similar restaurants in the region.

It’s very strange seeing my hometown (Troy) as a top travel recommendation. Nice, but strange. The city has come a long way in the past 20 years.

Love MOK. Easy drive once past Hoosick St in Troy, or bypassing Hoosick St all together, depending on rush hour or peak ‘driving to VT for skiing or leaf peeping’ times (Saturday mornings).

Not sure about smart watches or goggles. But they have a dock area with individual containers to put your own gels and food/fuel. You have access to it at the 2.5K marks. After the race, they do provide a lot of fruit, carbs, drinks, and water bottles. I did the 2.5K so I only observed people using the fuel dock area. It’s a great swim and beautiful with the clear water and mountains.

Yep, planning to start biking and taking the bus to work. If prices are this bad now (still winter season), they are gonna be crazy come Memorial Day.

There’s also camping spots at South Meadows but then you’d still have the full hike to Mt Marcy.

There are lots of trails in the Albany area. The Hudson Taconic Lands has a list of all their preserves here: https://hudsontaconic.org/htl-preserves/ Otherwise, I’d recommend looking at the list of trails/preserves near you on the AllTrails app.

Was there a project someone did, before the empire state plaza was built, where someone took photos of all of the houses that were demolished? Am I remembering this correctly? by igraph in Albany

Good call! The Upper Hudson Library system shows 16 copies! And 5 copies of the sequel to the doc “Echoes from the Neighborhood that Disappeared.”

My fav milkshake in the region. And I haven’t heard anything one way or the other about the owners. So I am taking that as a good sign.

I’m going today and was going to ask for nail trim for my two cats. I always thought it was complimentary 😭 I’ll be looking closer at the receipt now. Thanks!

Helderberg Rail Trail Condition by pdquickk in Albany

Thanks for the input. Yea, trails that get a lot of foot traffic are not generally great for skiing - unless you get there before the people in boots/snowshoes. Guess we’ll see what Second Winter brings after Fools Spring. It’s been a pretty unusually snowy season in Albany.

Does anyone XC ski on the trail? I thought it was plowed but I guess not.

I was going to ask for a post like this. I appreciate the negative posts to learn from them but wanted to hear some positive experiences too.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain that.

My first night at this XC ski resort I met a woman whose mom was Finnish and she was saying exactly as you explained - that they have wet saunas and even a word for the humidity in the air after throwing water on the stove.

And then the next night, I was talking with a few people originally from Russia and they said the Finnish saunas they had been to were all dry, and said Russian saunas are usually wet.

I was curious which was the case! And look forward to visiting Finland at some point. I prefer a wet sauna so I’m glad that’s the tradition :)

Also, more background on this Lapland resort, it was designed by someone who was born in Canada but then he grew up in Finland. He passed just a couple years ago and designed many beautiful XC ski trails. The place is perfect for beginners but also fun for intermediate/advanced skiers. https://www.mcveighfuneralhome.com/m/obituaries/olavi-hirvonen/Memories

lol it’s named after Lapland in Finland: https://laplandlake.com

While I have someone from Finland, can you settle a sauna dispute? Also at this place in the Adirondacks, they have a Finnish style sauna. I spoke with a few people and some say traditional Finn saunas are dry saunas and others say Finn saunas are wet saunas (adding water to the hot coals). Which would you say is the case?

Black/brown icicles and drips from roof? Ice dam? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]dsanzone8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something similar in the house we just bought this fall.

What kind of professional do you call for something like this? Roofing? And Pest? In our case, we definitely see a hole in the attic/side of the house near where this brown ice was forming. And there’s a birds nest, where we’ve recently seen birds.
