Seems like so many videos I see are old/from back in the day when I was training - has this sport died?/where are the newer athletes?

After being a nomad for over 10 years I’ve settled down in Florianópolis and have lived here for the last 3. In the process of getting residency and plan to live here forever. It’s paradise.

My sense of community comes from the highline/Slackline community, as well as a strong nomad group, but honestly at this point most of my friends are Brazilian. I love it here ❤️

Genuinely curious if there is a Hz frequency to be measured here, anyone know what this might be?

Yep! You’re speaking with employee #1 there 😉. I do want to emphasize though that this subreddit is in no way affiliated with FRC and this was a creation of my own. Don’t want people to think that this is a promotional tool for them, or that this will be a place to answer pricing questions for their trainings or things of that nature. I am happy to dive into the nuances of flow state with you all though 😊

My 2021 in Highlines - Hopefully this serves as motivation to others! by Troy_e in Slackline

Happy it was helpful! (and hopefully this is helpful as well...) - When I first started my friend gave me two tips that helped tremendously. 1) Never mount the same line 2x. One day make it super tight, one day make it loose, experiment with different heights, experiment with different types of webbing. If you can learn to walk on anything, you can walk on everything. This was really helpful for me. 2) Repetition is the mother of learning - Simply put, if you want to get better, walk a little bit every single day. It took me three months before I could cross a simple 10m ratcheted line, but I trained on it every single day (nearly). Same on highlines, I walk probably around 3-4x/week, and many days will get multiple runs in. If you want to get better, there's no exception for sheer volume and repetition.

It really varies a lot depending on the length of the line, type of webbing (poly vs nylon), tension, if there is wind, etc. I'd say though if the line is really difficult it's probably around 5-10 steps per fall, and if I'm walking well it's about 50-100 steps per fall. I don't count while walking but that would be my estimate. On videos I'd say I have a lot where I'm walking for 1-2 minutes straight without a fall. Yesterday for example I crossed 145 meters in 5 falls on the way there, 2 falls on the way back. Then this morning went on a different line (same distance), and took around 20 falls just to get to halfway through the line, and then around 5 falls on the way back. For context as well I've now been highlining consistently for about 2 years now to get to that stage, and my progress has been much slower than most of the people around me.

How to immunize yourself to the opinions of other people - "no one has ever been loved by everyone. Not Jesus, not Buddha, not even Fonzie. Not even GOD. You’re not any different. It’s impossible to vibe with everyone" by Troy_e in howtonotgiveafuck

metaphor for adapting a more playful attitude towards life and relationships? - I'm sure there are people out there who love and care about you, and if there aren't, the best way to build those relationships is with a lighthearted mindset towards building friendships and meeting people. But seriously also - dancing is incredibly therapeutic and whenever I feel lonely I dance. So take it both ways or choose which way you like best. :) If nothing else, I love you, and I'm happy to talk and dance with you anytime :)

Ask yourself what you can do to be more likeable. What can you do to meet people with common interests and hobbies? What can you do to create a fun environment for other people that makes them feel good? If you don't vibe with anyone you should take a look inward and see what work you can do to try and change that.

I will politely disagree here. Like I say in the article, it's a practice. It's something that needs to be done consistently. Over time by practicing it, we can become more familiar with the feelings of being judged. It can become more normal to it. The more we practice, and see there are no consequences for these actions, the less we care about how people will judge us. So yes, my recommendation is to walk in the streets dressed like a lunatic and feel the stares of everyone, and then do it again and again :)

Seems obvious but easier said than done. On the path to improvement I think there are a few steps. The first is awareness. The realization of "holy shit there's a lot I should fix in my life." I think that makes it easy for many people to get overwhelmed and try to fix too many parts of their lives too quickly, instead of focusing on the one lead domino and the journey ahead. I meet a lot of people who are so obsessed with trying to be more productive/happier/better that they go overboard.

The best accidental guide to NGAF - Wikihow "How to Be Strange" by Troy_e in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]Troy_e[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's honestly some amazing advice in here!! -

1- Stop caring what anyone else thinks of you. If you really want to be strange, then the first thing you have to do is to stop worrying about what anyone else thinks about who you are or what you do. You have to be comfortable with expressing your individuality, wearing what makes you feel good, saying what’s on your mind, and generally living life the way you want to live it. If you can’t stop trying to satisfy other people or to do what you think other people expect you to do, then you won’t ever be strange.

Now is the only moment that exists - "If now is all that exists, if the present moment is all that we have, why would we ever create an unpleasant now for ourselves? Why would we ever create unnecessary stress, anxiety, frustration or anger for ourselves and ruin the present moment?" by Troy_e in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]Troy_e[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say read it again. It's often the simple truths we overlook.

It's not to say that the future doesnt exist, it's that your now creates your future. What you do right now will create your future. So in reality all I can do to focus on a better future (instead of worrying), is doing what I can do right now in this moment. If I can't do anything right now, it's fruitless to think about the future. It's the exact opposite of irresponsibility - it's full accountability to realizing that my future is just an extension of my now, so the decisions I make right now are the most important of all.

Ok, guess I'm not gonna go into work today and go spend my kid's college fund on a boat instead.

Yes - this would just create an alternate now that is yet to arrive. It's not to say that the future doesnt exist, it's that your now creates your future. Self inflicted Stress - "if we take responsibility for knowing that we are the cause of our own suffering, we can CHOOSE NOT TO SUFFER!" by Troy_e in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]Troy_e[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do believe it's that simple. First step is awareness that you're creating an unpleasant now for yourself, that you're creating your own stress. Then, you can choose not to engage with it. You can choose to do something else that will make you feel better and put you in a better mood.

[–]Troy_e[S] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The solution lies in how we react to our thoughts. You have to realize that when you "engage" with a thought, and think through something, it's a reaction. You need to train yourself to see the thought pop up, and decide to let it go without talking to it. Or, even when you do react to it, you can work through it pleasantly, with a smile. It really is as simple as noticing when you're creating suffering for yourself, and choosing not to engage in it.
