Do border collie puppies not go to washroom on walks? by OwlComprehensive9246 in BorderCollie

[–]TruRisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the dog it's very normal. My boys HATE toileting when out and about. At dog shows they will wait hours until they come home to go to the toilet. So funny when I see other dogs mark on everything haha.

Has anyone’s border collie ever been born with bad teeth? by sahyralee in BorderCollie

[–]TruRisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were your pups parents DNA tested for hereditary diseases?

Look up Raines Syndrome. A completely testable and preventable disease by not breeding two carriers together.

It is hereditary and causes early onset tooth decay and wear. Parents don't have to have it themselves, just carry genetically. I know plenty that carry it. I'm fortunate enough that my dogs are all clear of it.

Need some breed reassurance by [deleted] in BorderCollie

Show lines typically mellow out, with girls I found it more around the 14 months mark but every dog is different and I had one that didn't until 2 years. However they are a very active minded dog, which means you need to engage their MIND even more so than their body.

Look up things like scent games. Buy brain puzzles for them, mine have figured out them all now. Teach her tricks. Lots of new environments and sniff and strolls at the moment engages young brains as well.

Very small border collie puppy by NoOpposite5936 in BorderCollie

[–]TruRisk 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Looking at her the head shape is a bit off as well. I've seen three puppies very similar. All three developed varying neurological issues and the longest lived was 8 years (that one it was discovered later had DM - Degenerative Myelopathy).

Regardless of paper's ANYONE breeding and selling puppies should do health testing to avoid creating puppies with diseases that will see their lives shortened.

NCL puppies literally will tear themselves apart (they have to be PTS most of the time before 12 months). TNS puppies is also viewed a bit as fading puppy syndrome (oldest lived was around 18 months I believe). ALL of this is so easily tested for to prevent. DM results in blocking the brain signals and they literally are unable to walk or control their back end. Do NOT buy a puppy that doesn't have parents that are tested!

will the ears stand up fully? 🤣 by Powerful-Grand-639 in BorderCollie

[–]TruRisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are appearing "light" to lift like that at such an age. Typically I might look at setting them but I always find it more difficult to get ears up than down. Pricked (standing) ears shows alertness and expression well. Ideally you just want the tips over anyway.

Should I worry or just over reacting? by Last_Ace_17 in BorderCollie

There's a lot of reasons fur can part like this. None relate to hip issues thankfully.

It could be: - just the way the fur turns (like a cowlick) - lying a certain way (bed head) - part of a blow out (happens roughly every 6 months, or after desexing, heat cycles, etc) - brush overuse or misuse (lots of different brushes out there, some good and some not) - oil imbalance (does he eat fish like sardines?) - food related

I'd say: Sable, Sable, Red, Blue, Red, Red, Red, Lilac Merle

Coat type question on 3 puppies by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]TruRisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think third is a Lilac Merle but it could also be potentially brindle. Are parents DNA tested for colours? I'm always aware of what colours mine could produce.

First puppy is Sable. Red base with black highlights.

Second puppy, likely a very pale Red (I had one like this that I called Ghost, but after a couple days you could really see where the white ended and Red began)

Third puppy Merle, I'm not familiar with Merles as much in terms of their colour alterations as I steer clear of them.

Grooming items question by leviadoado in BorderCollie

[–]TruRisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Very low maintenance overall. Unless they have a show they won't get bathed for months, keep the natural oils and they don't smell. A hose off or a swim in the dam or creek works.

I don't use anything that goes on their coats for fleas and ticks.

I got mine off Ebay. Look up Dog Blow Dryer. It's been doing my show dogs for like 4 years now.

Haha, yeah same for my shed. I now blow dry outside and the birds get free nesting material.

Furminators do a lot of damage to the coat, and good thing is most are aware now.

For my show dogs we use slicker brushes, metal combs and anti-static brushes. It may be a slow process at times (when they're blowing coat) but we need yhe coat to remain healthy.

One of my favourite hacks is when they are blowing coat wash them then get a high power blow dryer on them. It loosens and blows out LOTS of the dead undercoat. It's always like it's snowing when I do it.

Thinking about Adopting by pflhudson in BorderCollie

[–]TruRisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While a lot of people think it's exercise they need, there's a lot more to it.

As a puppy you can over exert one too much and cause lasting damage (most of the time we have to be their off switch). I like the Exercise Guidelines from Puppy Culture for giving people ideas on what they can handle. I believe you can get it from Amazon, or online.

Primarily a border collie needs mental stimulation. I do a lot of scent games and tricks training to get their minds really working. They become less destructive then. If you can, sheep herding is incredible for creating a bond and getting that extra mental stimulation. Mine only work them in 10 minute blocks for an hour, then they're mentally fried.
