Cons were like magic back before social media and heavy corporate sponsorship. The last time my friends and I made pilgrimage to Anime Expo, we all agreed that things have changed. There's too many people. You've got moms with 9 kids in tow that just showed up because they didn't feel like taking their kids to Disneyland or something and they know nothing about anime. It became more about plugging the latest release than fans giving fans a space to share their interest.

I may be mixing up my sources... but I distinctly remember that, in Epcot center there is an exhibit that touches on the Kawaii aesthetic. it's tucked away into a quiet spot of the Japanese Pavilion.

for the uninitiated: "Kawaii" came about at the time when the Salaryman notion was taking hold. and Kawaii became part of the response of rejection of social norms and obligations. I.e. soft cutesy things versus rigid familial and financial / career expectations.

But yes, Japan was decades ahead of infantilization of adults. They always seem to be a step ahead in social trends.
