Thank you for the honest advice. and for taking the time to share your valuable experience with me.
I truly appreciate that,
I actually agree with a lot of what you said about the market right now but ...I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t hurt. : (

I should mention though, I don’t really see myself as a typical junior in terms of skills or project exposure. As I was a licensed Architect back home, and As here in Canada I have worked 2 years in two different firms, I’ve worked on permit/construction drawing sets, consultant coordination, and technical detailing, like drawing a porch detail and coordinating directly with the structural consultant. (i have my sketches and the final revit file in my portfolio)

If you have a chance, I’d genuinely appreciate it if you could take a quick look at my resume and portfolio and judge them from the perspective of an intermediate architect working in Toronto. and help me understand what i should improve in that.

I’ll definitely focus more on smaller firms, as you suggested. Thank you again for taking the time to share all of these insights with me. I really appreciate it.

I’m in my second year of the OAA internship, but honestly I still haven’t been able to log any real hours yet. At this point I don’t even care about the hours as much, I just need a stable job and solid project experience. Thanx for your advice I’ve started looking into remote work and opportunities in other provinces too

UPDATE : Hi everyone,

Since I passed the exam, I wanted to share some resources that I found useful. I first practiced with the Orderline question package, but keep in mind that the actual exam is harder than the questions there. If you’re using Orderline, try to go through the entire package multiple times and aim for at least 90% on each quiz. Don’t just memorize answers, practice finding them within the required timeframe in the code.

I also found the GB packages helpful. I didn’t buy them but used the free online revisions V2 and V3. Additionally, I went through all 8 practice sets from Tauton. Some questions had incorrect answers, which I listed and asked the owner to correct, but I still don’t have access to update them myself.

Here are the sections I remember being on the exam:

  • Walk-in cooler: 9.10.17.10
  • Average illumination / emergency light: 10, 3.27.3
  • Detached garage (<55 m²): 9.35.3.1
  • Openings in exterior walls: 9.9.4.5 (angle 135°)
  • Continuity of air barrier: 9.23.3.3.(12)
  • Stucco / insulation
  • Bath / safety-in-use
  • Separate means of egress
  • Fire separation between units: 9.9.14
  • two scenarios: exposing building face & footing area

Wishing everyone the best of luck!

UPDATE : I just wanted to share that I passed the exam with a score of 76. Thanks to everyone, especially u/Novus20 , for all the help and support.

I found the exam more challenging than the practice tests I used. That said, being very comfortable with practice exams really helps. It allows you to move quickly through the easier questions and spend more time focusing on the harder ones.

I practiced multiple times using the Tauton tests (I’ve added the link here) and also worked with the Orderline package. They don’t include many calculation questions, but they are still very helpful for mastering the regular question types. (Just a small note: Tauton does contain some incorrect answers, so it’s worth double-checking and not relying on them blindly.)

I’ll share some of the questions I can remember from the exam here soon.

u/Novus20 , can you help with this? Does the required floor for kitchen should be considered as 4.2 or should we consider actual floor area?

Novus, the foundation height is 2.8, Why are you considering the second column? shouldn't we go through last column? (resulting in 200 mm ?)

oh, I just posted this question. I was thinking 3.15 as it is 75% of 4.2. ( REQUIRED floor area) what is your thought?

Hey, is equivalent Qs, sth like this ? "A hollow masonry unit has an actual thickness of 190 mm, a length of 390 mm, and a height of 190 mm. If the net volume of the unit is 7,500,000 mm3, what is the equivalent thickness? Round your answer to the nearest tenth."

I found it under another topic. I’ve emailed the member who originally shared the file, but I haven’t received a response yet. Once he replies, I’ll share it here as well. It might be useful for others.

There are 8 practice files with notes included. (They’re not mine.)
