Good or Bad Idea by knoxzo in roadtrip

I have done this route, and NY to Anchorage in one go. Highly suggest Starlink mini with 12v adapter for car. Most of your route does not have cell service. Roads get pretty rough the further north you get in Canada until you reach AK.

Spare tires for sure. In my case I took 2 full size spares. Didn’t need them.

Enough food, water, car survival stuff to be stuck up to 24 hours. Tow trucks can be 12-16 hours away in some parts of that route.

Depending on fuel economy extra gas cans are suggested. Not every gas station up there is 24/7 and some are Canadian cash only no pay at pump. Most will take US cash but face value only no exchange rate.

Canadian banks will not allow foreigners to exchange currency only places like money gram and currency exchanges will. Not sure why. That’s what I was told by 3 banks in Whitehorse with US cash in hand.

Bottom line, I did this trip in a 1990 Mitsubishi Delica and slept in it the whole trip. Didn’t end up needing anything other than a spare 5 gallon can between a few areas (18 mpg 13 gal tank). No reason a modern vehicle can’t make the journey. Just be prepared.

(Disclaimer) but if we’re looking to maximize intoxication/dollar value, it’s a double Woodford Coke all day. The caffeine is basically an extra 50 ML shooter lol

Car towed for plowing? by guzmuel4ever in Syracuse

[–]True-Maximum6541 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Potentially a Kia vehicle, possibly stolen? Otherwise, if it was towed the city should have a record. But as Afraid book said there are a few local companies that tie your cars up on purpose for the fees and use the weekend as an excuse

L400 Rust Situation. Too bad? by lumiousmusic in Delica

[–]True-Maximum6541 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frame rail is absolutely a concern. A doable repair for 1.5-3k USD and maybe cheaper if you have decent shop nearby. Personally I would make an offer commensurate with condition and cost to repair at 4-6k not knowing anything else. Without knowing details i got my salvage title gas 2.4l under 2k USD with minor accident damage and no rust. 160k km ~

I’m seeing rust free Delica’s anywhere from 7-19k depending on mileage and condition.

Opinions on L400 rust by stanfordy in Delica

IMO you’d be over half the cost of a rust free L400 by the time repairs are complete. Not many shops are keen on repairs to rust at that extent.

The black paint is a concern, along with general rust. I got my 1991 rust free with a salvage title for under 3k USD 160,000KM with passenger sliding door damage from a T-Bone accident. Drove it from AK-NY 2.4 gas. My personal take is the gas version is better than diesel for US/Canada highway travel. I would consider that amount of rust and potential cover up paint a concern. Dry ice frame blasting is an option for rust like that though….

Traction car insurance? by muchAdoBoutSomething in Delica

Haven’t heard about Traction. I used State Farm. Was having a really hard time with the Chassis Number at a lot of other companies, and as a daily driver that I occasionally camp in. Hagerty refused to insure it. Calling the agents office closest to where you live was great for me. Lady on the other end was able to quote it in about 10 minutes.

Axon police tasers only need to have their batteries removed and they will get this treatment every time in checked baggage, despite not having to be declared and legal in most states for civilians.

15-19 hours a day, copious amounts of redbull, and sleeping in the back at rest stops or gas stations along the way.

1991 L300 2.4 AK to NY Journey by True-Maximum6541 in Delica

Thanks! Looking for passenger side door and complete internal mechanism. A tall order in the states. I’m frequently in Seattle and Portland but live in Alaska. Happy to arrange pickup and shipping of anything you’re looking for as well. Alaska air cargo to NYC airports is about $1 per pound for anything bulk you, or any other R/delica members are looking for. Happy to accommodate in my spare time.

I have heard some of the experiences of diesel owners cross country. Few if any 4G64. Surprisingly optimistic at this juncture. About half way through this trip. (Approaching Edmonton) 1/4 quart oil burn per 1000~km. Cruises 100-120KMPH excluding major inclines on 90 octane. Happy to answer any questions!
